Petraeus Condemns U.S. Church's Plan to Burn Qurans
Wall Street Journal ^ | September 6, 2010 | JULIAN E. BARNES And MATTHEW ROSENBERG

KABUL—The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan said the planned burning of Qurans on Sept. 11 by a Florida church could put the lives of American troops in danger and damage the war effort.

Gen. David Petraeus said the Taliban would exploit the demonstration for propaganda purposes, drumming up anger toward the U.S. and making it harder for allied troops to carry out their mission of protecting Afghan civilians.

"It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort," Gen. Petraeus said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. "It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems. Not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community."

I grudgingly agree with Petraeus.

...although he has no right to stop it.

“It’s funny how little respect Petraeus has earned by winning the war in Iraq against all odds.”

You think we “won” in Iraq?!

I define winning a war as vanquishing the enemy to the point resulting in unconditional surrender and the cessation of hostilities. We have not done that - nor ever been expected nor allowed to do that - since WWII. Patraeus merely prolonged the inevitable.

I grudgingly agree with PetraeusObama.

There fixed it, because it's not Petraeus' call.

His job is to protect his troops. It’s perfectly rational. Remember the Danish cartoon’s aftermath? He will be dealing with that for his men. As good as the Koran burning may feel to those who participate, the men in the field will suffer.

Anything that hurts the war efort is his business and anyone who does so is a traitor.

What if cartoons mocking the Quran or protest signs at the Ground Zero mosque hurt the war effort? Where do you want to draw the line?

“But what is the point of winning a battle—and surrendering on the Constitution?”

I don’t think Petreaus said it should be illegal to burn the Koran like this. He just said it would hurt our war effort because it will inspire and strengthen our enemies.

Do you feel like, during a war, Americans should behave in a way that inspires and strengthens our enemies?

While I think burning the Koran doesn’t accomplish anything, it is within their rights. Besides aren’t the libs always defending Islam saying only the extremists perform terrorism and that we should be tolerant .Shouldn’t followers of Islam be expected to also have to be equally tolerant?

I draw the line at protecting my son and the others. Where do you draw the line?

I am not proposing government or police action. I am stating my opinion of the behavior. Tough to make a treasion case, but I can call them that for hurting the war effort.

The troops can defend themselves (to the extent allowed by Rules of Engagement).

The Christian minority in these muslims countries are the ones who could suffer greatly. The fools in Florida are contributing to the persecution; they should consider this and pardon the korans somehow.

Why doesn’t he condemn islam?

Oh yeah, that'd be such a smart thing to do when he's fighting a war in a Muslim country and, you know, actually needs the support of the Afghans who are, shhhhh, Muslim.

Yep.

I hope muzzies are offended. I hope they confront the church. I hope they make a scene. I hope there is violence. I hope the old media covers it.

I hope the American people rise up against the virus of Islam that is strangling Europe and unless stopped will do the same to us.

Oh, yeah, and did you forget it is muslims trying to kill our soldiers? The politicians can deny it, but we are at war with islam. I am sick of namby-pamby politicians and military “leaders” who are afraid to say islam is the problem. Sucking up to muslims has never helped America and it never will.

Agreed. I was pointing out the hypocrisy of the left. I disagree with both the builders and the burners.

One answer to all your questions:

Because we have idiots with mush for brains infecting the White House and, to a lesser extent, Congress.

Remember in November.

"Anything that hurts the war efort is his business and anyone who does so is a traitor."

Anyone who contributes to the persecution of minority Christians in muslim countries is also a traitor to the Church. This Judas church is betraying their Christian brothers, then they will go back to their comfy Florida condos.

I thought his job was the make sure America wins the war. Perhaps he’s like Obama and doesn’t want to win this war.

I think this is something the General should stay out of. It seems to me that a high ranking member of the military is trying to interfere with the 1st amendment rights of a civilian.

The military and civilian worlds should be kept strictly apart.

ummmm, anyone want to rationalize this?

No thanks! The rationality of political correctness is to shut people up and defeat their POV. PC should be considered anathema to the American mindset.

The islamics need to go around saying ‘this isn’t all the USA or all christians’ like we’re supposed to say about them, and should be fine.

No? Wait, you mean there’s a double standard?!
