Petraeus Condemns U.S. Church's Plan to Burn Qurans
Wall Street Journal ^ | September 6, 2010 | JULIAN E. BARNES And MATTHEW ROSENBERG

KABUL—The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan said the planned burning of Qurans on Sept. 11 by a Florida church could put the lives of American troops in danger and damage the war effort.

Gen. David Petraeus said the Taliban would exploit the demonstration for propaganda purposes, drumming up anger toward the U.S. and making it harder for allied troops to carry out their mission of protecting Afghan civilians.

"It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort," Gen. Petraeus said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. "It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems. Not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community."

“I too condemn the burning of Korans.
It’s a waste of perfectly good toilet paper.”

Good point.

So, was Patton wrong to say bad things about the Nazis, thus putting “his troops in unnecessary danger”? What wimpy thinking.

“Play like it’s a war zone!”

What a truly novel idea! My god!

No one in charge has thought like this since WWII ended.

It’s funny how little respect Petraeus has earned by winning the war in Iraq against all odds. Now he’s looked upon as an idiot by those same people who only recently were calling him a great American hero. I guess we all know more than he does about fighting these wars, don’t we?

That’s why we lost every one since!

Patreaus is trying to convince the locals not to support the Taliban. The more locals who don't supoport the Taliban, the fewer US troops need to patrol and guard roads and get killed.

Burning the koran would seem to stifle his effort as it gives the locals mores reasons to take the wrong side.

But, hey, help your self. Freedom of speech and right to taunt and all that. If my son was in Afghan I'd be kicking some butt on the first match I see lit.

I just did a look up to see when this Florida Church plans to burn the Koran broke. It was on August 10, 2010. I find it amazing that Obama has been fretting about this preacher and 50 member church for a month. Methinks Obama’s priorities are misguided.

Forget about Obama. Even a stopped clock is correct twice a day.

Look at the Drudge page today. The church's actions have sparked anti-American demonstrations far from Afghanistan.

Indonesian Muslims Protest Plans to Burn Quran

The U.S. does not need this cr@p so that 50 church members can feel good about themselves.

As another Freeper pointed out, they had to buy these Qurans in order to burn them. So, apart from sparking anti-American demonstrations and putting ammunition into the enemy's propaganda machine, this church also ended up putting money into the pockets of Islamic publishing houses.

With all due respect General, the Taliban and other Islamo-facists will use ANYTHING we do here in the US as propaganda against us.

Please tell me you simply forgot the sarcasm marker with your post. Please!?

First we had a Department of War. Then we had a Department of Defense. Now we have split that into a Depatment of Nation Building closely tied to Depatments of Our Salary and Our Security.

Do you have any idea what the Sunni Islamic factions, who make up around 90% of Afghan Muslims, have in common? It is not just the Taliban's POV to go after “the devil”/Western ideas. Since the Sunnis are the dominant sect of Islam, f’ the Qur’an and Mohammad, the ultimate back stabber. Islam is a gutter religion, even the moderates, who help enable the radicals (Saudi, tec...) are reprobates.

The only reason moderate Muslims deal with “the devil” is $$$ and using our soldier's spilled blood for defense (How convenient for the Sunnis/Shi'a/Sufism/Ahmadiva and sub-branches within who would not mind the Christendom destroyed).

Wasn't it a few weeks ago some General said something to the effect that American Troops should remove their eye protection...

A few months ago how the military should accept Homosexuals in their ranks?

Was it the same General?

Pretty Boy, GQ Magazine PC Generals for whom “Victory is not an option”. Ever so well spoken who can clearly articulate and demonstrate using Power point why the tensile strength of a wet paper bag it too great from them to fight their way out of.

America's GIs never outfought.

Americas’ current crop of Generals and Admirals out-thought by the enemy every time.

I wouldn’t put the Iraq War in the win column just yet, though his surge was undoubtedly successful. But what is the point of winning a battle—and surrendering on the Constitution? If anything I expect his Obama-led groveling to embolden the Islamists, not to make American troops safer. But I suppose in your eyes he should be beyond my judgment?

“The only good Islamist is a dead one. Get used to it. And remember, they will kill you in a heartbeat given the chance.”

Now I forget, why have we spent that last five years in Iraq trying to make the Muslims there quit killing each other? Why are we calling it a victory that the Muslims in Iraq are now not being killed at such a high rate as they were?

Was the “surge” a mistake?

Should we have withdrawn from Iraq years ago?

Why are we rebuilding their infrastructure when ours is in such disrepair?

Who gives a sh*t? It’s none of Petraeus’s business.

I vividly remember many people selling empty then brand new Xbox 360 shipping boxes on Ebay. People were buying them.

All an entrepreneur needs to do is fabricate an assembly line of a fake book resembling the Quran, who is to tell the difference? The Muslims will still get PO’d anyway plus it creates jobs for Americans who need jobs.

All a person needs is the motivation to succeed and to be bold, the materials are obviously cheap as cardboard and an attached cover image pasted to a fake looking book, optional is the bacon placed inside or the resin coated dog poop.

Money need not be sent to Muslims to get a Quran or Koran, just having the image of one is more than enough.

“Well stated. Obama made Afghan his war and now we are witnessing Obama’s incompetence as Commander in Chief.”

We are also witnessing Petreaus helping Zero make good on his campaign promise, which he inserts into every speech, while losing men in the ass end of the world in an area that can not be treated as if it was Iraq.

I question why he would do this, knowing full well that a different theater does not mean that similar tactics will work, especially given conditions in a tribal dominated, 7th century culture.

The fact that this strategy worked in Iraq does NOT mean it will work in A-stan. Petraeus’ main accomplishment was to make the first formal accommodation with Sunni insurgents.
