For nine years after the attacks of Sept. 11, many American Muslims made concerted efforts to build relationships with non-Muslims, to make it clear they abhor terrorism, to educate people about Islam and to participate in interfaith service projects. They took satisfaction in the observations by many scholars that Muslims in America were more successful and assimilated than Muslims in Europe.
Now, many of those same Muslims say that all of those years of work are being rapidly undone by the fierce opposition to a Muslim cultural center near ground zero that has unleashed a torrent of anti-Muslim sentiments and a spate of vandalism. The knifing of a Muslim cab driver in New York City has also alarmed many American Muslims.

Couldn’t have said it better myself!
Ditto this!
The senseless murder of nearly 3000 citizens on 9/11, the murder of 13 soldiers at Ft. Hood and two more shot, one killed in Arkansas has a few Americans a wee bit concerned too.
Cry me a river, but when American Muslims stand up and oust those that do these dastardly deeds from their midst's, I'll feel more like accepting them.
A man I work with told me that his teenage child was told by a Muslim friend that what the NAZIs did was good. This occurred in a prosperous middle-class suburb if NYC.
I wonder who taught that Muslim child to admire NAZIsm? It’s very unfortunate, but not hard to figure out.
HG Wells probably had a prophetic vision of what our world will evolve into many generations from now and I believe the Morlocks of the future will originate with Islam.
The Eloi are christians.
Go see the original film ye thee of Islamic faith.
I have an even bigger problem with those who wish to impose an alien religious and judicial system on the American people.
When they quit sympathizing with their mad brethren who want to take over America (which is approximately when pigs will fly) is when America will be ready to bid them a warm welcome instead of a hot goodbye.
Muslims can belong...somewhere other than America...American Muslim is a contradiction.
Gee, NYT, I'm so shocked that once again you 'forgot' to mention that the cabbie's attacker was a white American who was working for a pro-Muslim film company. Do you suppose that the reason why the "American Muslims" are so alarmed is because he got to see true Islam up close and it made him go nuts because the reality of Islam is the exact opposite of what the Left would like everyone to believe?
many American Muslims made concerted efforts to build relationships with non-Muslims, to make it clear they abhor terrorism
BULLSHIT that statement is total BULLSHIT
Shouldn’t they be asking, “Will they ever belong to us?”
“American Muslims Ask, Will We Ever Belong?”
And a growing number of reasonable and fair minded Americans are answering.....
NO!
Maybe Americans are just overly sensitive to cultures immersed in beheadings and flying body parts.
BINGO When they fully assimilate, including pride in THIS country, our values, and our Constitution, then they have a good chance of acceptance.
As always , I suggest instead of us posting our outrage here to each other ( who are all basically in agreement) Sent a message to the person who wrote the article Laurie Goodstein

Agreed, Islam is an expansionist theocratic ideology and cannot be allowed to spread in the U.S.
BINGO , give this man a cigar. Right on target my friend.
Is anyone even curious as to why AFTER 9/11 a million Muslims came flooding into this country ? No one ever thought about that ,?
