Liberals Losing the Culture Wars
HUMAN EVENTS ^ | 09/03/2010 | Roger Hedgecock

Posted on 09/03/2010 10:36:13 PM PDT by neverdem

For decades, liberals won the culture wars and, consequently most of the elections that reshaped America. More than politics is changing in this crossroads year of 2010—Americans are reasserting traditional culture. You won't read or see it in the mainstream media, but this fact is driving the political story.

The Republican Party is not resurgent (although it may be the beneficiary); America is resurgent.

Generations of Americans have never known any culture except the progressive, politically correct left.

Beginning in the 1960s, God was driven out of American public life because liberals said the Constitution demanded a separation of church and state.

Planned Parenthood was part of a campaign that convinced many Americans that killing unborn babies was really a defense of a woman's constitutional right to choose.

The ACLU sued to define "free speech" to include vandalism, sacrilegious art, and spitting on returning veterans of the Vietnam War.

Even more depressing, the drive for equal rights for liberated slaves, begun by Republicans during and after the Civil War, morphed into a liberal affirmative action program which reintroduced privilege based on skin color.

In 2010, the tide has turned.

This year, liberals demanded Americans respect the triumphalist mosque near Ground Zero as an expression of American commitment to religious freedom. At the same time, liberals sued to remove a cross in a remote area of California's Mojave Desert and sponsored hate crime legislation that would put Christian pastors in jail for reading Biblical passages condemning homosexuality.

The hypocrisy had gone too far. Americans noticed the one-sidedness; they saw “The Agenda” at work. Americans by 70% oppose the Ground Zero mosque and Obama's support of it has hurt him and his party going into November. The liberals lost the culture conflict and, consequently, the political momentum.

In the 2008 campaign, liberals promised Planned Parenthood that healthcare "reform" would include all "reproductive services" (read: federally funded abortions). But in the debate over healthcare legislation, Rep. Bart Stupak and a small band of pro-life Democrats joined with Republicans in demanding the continuation of a ban on federally funded abortions.

Based on promises made by Pelosi and Reid, Stupak and enough others caved and the "reform" passed. But the "ban" was watered down in the final bill drafted in secret; abortion coverage was made subject to further rule-making by the federal bureaucracy.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius was given the power to write regulations governing required coverage in all health insurance plans under the Obamacare bill. A notorious pro-abortion advocate, Sebelius prepared to require abortion as a covered procedure, with federal funding for those who could not afford it.

The deception was too obvious. Americans noticed. Obama, Reid, and Pelosi would say or do anything (or bribe anyone) to advance a federal takeover of our healthcare choices.

Americans by 60-70% want this "reform" repealed. Obama and Co. won the legislative battle, but lost the culture. Now they are losing the politics as well.

The Obamacare debate awakened what Nixon called the "Silent Majority." Silent no more, the Tea Party gatherings starting in the summer of 2009 galvanized American grassroots opposition. Liberal attempts to scold, denigrate, and marginalize this movement backfired. Now, incumbents of both parties are being thrown out of office in a political bloodbath that will reach a crescendo in November.

Al Sharpton's pathetic counter demonstration to Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Honor” event in D.C. is only the latest highlight of the perversion of the civil rights movement by its current self proclaimed "leaders." More and more American blacks have come to realize that the Democratic government plantation is not so different from the Democrat's original version in the pre-Civil War South. Dependency is dependency. A welfare check and food stamps are doled out by the new "massa”—same as the old "massa".

Americans of all backgrounds have noticed. Equality of opportunity has degenerated into new privileges based on skin color. Most Americans want a return to an opportunity society with "equal justice for all." The Voting Rights Act should apply to the New Black Panthers, too.

Too many commentators have looked only to the economy and Obama's failed economic policies to explain the Democrats swift fall from grace and the growing belief that the November election will turn the House, and maybe the Senate, over to the Republicans.

Underlying all politics is the culture. It is changing. The dominant liberal culture has yielded division and decay in American society—and a government-directed economy destroying our standard of living. The rejection of liberal culture has begun; the rejection of liberal politics will follow.

That's "Vanzetti", but a very apropos topic for this Labor Day weekend. It was brought to my attention that the "Haymarket riot" in Chicago was an important part of the establishment of Labor Day, and I read up on it. The labor leaders of that day were, in our terms, a bunch of commies, but they had a real beef. They were real underdogs to the police and the Pinkertons, and according to the modern interpretation, were trying to keep things in bounds. It's fascinating that the actual bomb thrower at the Haymarket has never been identified, but he is presumed to have been an independent actor on the anarchist/labor side. Seven men were tried and executed for their indirect involment in the incident, and the modern judgement that they were blameless seems to be correct.

All this I find just today, reading up on it. Most interesting to me is the developing history of the commemeration of the event. Originally, there was a monument to the slain policemen ( said now to be mostly victimes of "friendly fire" ) but this monument suffered continued vandalism, and was driven over the years out of existence. Now just in 2004, a monument has been erected at the site of the "riot" in Chicago. It's a modernist sculpture along the sidewalk on DesPlaines Avenue in Chicago. The whole ruckus was over the establishment of an eight hour work day, so think about that.

I was in high school during the 1960’s. I wouldn't say that my classmates and I did accept this crap. However, the courts did impose much of it. Being respectful of the laws, we did not revolt, but never fully agreed.

So for the last 45 to 50 years, we have been forced to accept rules/laws that we are not in agreement with. We are still a center right country, and the majority is sick and tired of living according to the rules set by the minority.

Lack of jobs and the poor economy got this revolt going, but intensity is increased because of the culture wars. When congress passed health care, that was adding insult to injury.

Americans hated the HMO’s that substituted their review panels for the judgment of their own doctors. They see no reason to accept government bureaucrats mucking up the doctor/patient relationship.

I agree that the liberals won the culture wars in court, but they have not yet won them in the hearts and minds of the majority of US citizens. We just need to be as relentless as they have been, and roll back their agenda.

It has taken them more than half a century to get where they are. Maybe it will take that long to roll it back. I hope not. I hope it takes less time.

Taking back control of the congress is just the first step. We need to push back in government at all levels; education, news services, churches, and entertainment outlets must all be involved.

When no one would be caught dead in an abortion clinic due to cultural mores, then Roe v Wade ceases to be important, because no one will choose it. At that point, a constitutional amendment to outlaw abortion should be an easy thing to do.

I can only hope so most sincerely. But this of course depends upon argent defense and exposure of the evils of liberalism!

We must expose to the leftist how this threatens them as well.

There is no equality or fairness in Affirmative action. There is no justice in the forced redistribution of wealth!

Theses things are antithetical to true equality, justice, and the American way.

It is a simple thing to expose them for what they are. A simple thing to remind people that 2 wrongs don’t make a right, and if they did then all theses “minorities” would be “equal” by now.

This must end.

they sure aren't losing the metaphorical race war

we now have at least 2 generations of utterly brainwashed folks from around aged 42-44 and under

it's all blame whitey and the history of western civilization is one big crime against brown and black and yellow and red humanity by whites...especially white Christians

nothing whatsoever like the perceived reality from when I grew up

they seem to be winning the homo war too and 1-2 million babies a year still get culled before their first breath of air

marriage itself has become an anachronism and white men seem pretty damned gay and eunuch like

Hollywood almost only makes movies which demonize the FReeper ideal

don't guess i agree with the author

Every now and then we slow the train down. That’s about it.

The reason we can’t reverse course is that the country no longer believes in the value system upon which it was based. Until we reach the breaking point and return to following judeo-Christian beliefs we will not be able to overcome the Islamization of western civilization. They really believe in their religion and we don’t believe in ours. Our religion is now based on self. We are able to save the world. We can control the earth’s temperature. Our kids are taught that we resulted from some random variation in chemicals with no purpose other than to pleasure ourselves. We need the religious awakening soon or liberals will slide us into Islam as a replacement for our current GAIA religion and the Constitution will be gone.

Winning an election is only a small part of what needs to happen.

I doubt that Roe vs. Wade will ever be overturned, and even if it were, it would simply return the abortion issue to state laws

I do not share your bleak outlook. If it was the Supreme Court that ruled on abortion, you might be correct, but I see a constitutional amendment as a way to end the practice.

One of the dirty little secrets about illegal aliens is they are not encouraged to come here because they do jobs that Americans won't do, it is because they are needed to replace the Americans never born because of abortions. Why do they need replacing? Social Security. The politicians of both parties know and understand that Social Security is a ponzi scheme. It only works when you have new people coming into the scheme. Since Roe v Wade this nations has been killing those that are needed to support the scheme.

If I remember correctly it only requires 31 states to ratify an amendment.

I think same sex marriage can be handled in the same way. The American people do not want same sex marriage. The ruling elite want it.

History is full of examples of what happens when even dictatorships push more than the citizens can accept.

And the same idiots that believed the media liars since 2004 and for sixty years before that will believe them again.

Here's where the wild card is. How many people have signed up to FreeRepublic in the last 10 years, saying "I have finally found a place where people believe as I do?" That doesn't count lurkers. Up until the mid- late nineties, there was no medium for conservative political thought, except for Rush, and he only got going in the late eighties. Now we have an internet where the truth can get out, and conservative ideas can get out, so that while Cronkite got away with the lie that Vietnam was unwinnable, Rather couldn't get away with the lie that George W. Bush's superior in the National Guard wrote a bad review.

It will take generations to undo the damage that the Left has done to this country, just as it took generations to do the damage, but the main tool that the Left used to do it, namely exclusive control of the media, is no more. How will that play out? We will have to see, but it ain't over yet.

On this account, at least, I think you are too pessimistic. From my perspective as a newly acclimated grandfather, I seem to be surrounded by a sea of liberal sentiment, true enough, but this sentiment is held by next generation participants in "traditional" family structure. I speak not only of my immediate family, but of families known to me through friendly association via my grandchildren. It just seems like the world goes on, radical and liberal rhetoric notwithstanding. We shall see what we shall see.

After DECADES of stealth, the liberals dropped the ball on the three yard line. They had it all when Obama won, and all they had to do was play the moderate game just a leeeeetle longer... But they couldn't help it. They started dancing and celebrating when he won, and the "I want Obama money" crowd couldn't hold in a victory dance any longer. On MSNBC, and The View and Hollywood and all their usual haunts, from Pelosi and Frank to "I won" Obama himself, the libs destroyed their decades-long charade and let us know who they really are. From the "mosque is about religious freedom" BS to "Arizonans are racists for enforcing the law" lies, they just decide "To heck with it, WE WON! WE'RE IN CHARGE! WE CAN SAY ANYTHING!" And they spent our money on the non-productive, and vented their hate at the military (Call me senator you fascist scum!) and just relaxed, and became who they really are... And those who bought the "coming together non-partisan" lies realize they've been had, and are finally (maybe if reluctantly) admitting the truth--the dems are the socialism with a human face party, and cannot be trusted, or allowed to hold power.

At least that is something both of us can agree on.
I never grew up in the 40s, 50s, early 60s, but, America sure was a lot better place back then, and America was on top of the world.

All the election of 2008 did was to show the true face of liberalism ( even though, it started back in 2006 ) and how they would rule once again if they had total rule, and has shown the true face of liberalism at a large scale.
The Carter Administration, and the Clinton Administration, they had to tone it down, even though, the Clinton Administration did show a fore shadow of what is to come in the future and people didn't take the warning signs.
What the liberals/Marxist/MSM don't know is ? the door is wide open alright, they ran this thing full head of steam over the cliff and threw caution against the wind, and what they sought after is the very thing that is going to bring them down, and their destruction, that is ? themselves.
Liberalism, Marxism, their ideology. their way of life and how they view things is never oriented for preservation of life, prosperity, protection of country, creation of wealth, holding to vaules that has out lasted thousands of years.
They are a cult of death, destruction, it's their nature to do so.

Liberals have won the culture war...

I'm afraid you are right. Look at much of the "conventional wisdom" that too many of our younger generation have unquestionably accepted from the public indoctrination centers. I think the left might have overreached too much, too soon, due to hubris and the underestimation of residual common sense, but the long term trend is not good.

I agree with that

The education system has been intentionally dumbed down. The assault on our culture and values has eroded love of country.

Look who's teaching the teachers:

The Weekly Standard 05-18-2009
  Education

Public schools are deeply entrenched with a socialist, progressive ideology.

Good points. Yes, an 8 hour work day. All that labor strife was prior to the formation of unions. And as bad as unions have become, they were necessary in their early days to provide the work force with fair wages and benefits. It’s long gotten out of hand and partly caused the slow death of the US auto industry. But it all gets back to the same problem; overt greed and control on the part of management, that is, bad management. And before anyone draws any conclusions, I am in senior management and once was in a union. And for all you white collar folks out there who’d never been in a union, you think you got your company benefits because you’re college educated? The reason you got your benefits was primarily due to the union work force demands prior; management figured it was easier to give the white collar work force benefits, and have some control over them, rather than the white collar work force also being unionized. Think about it.

Good points. They can’t help themselves now, their childishness and their hatred towards this evil country—which they expect to give them everything, the money will just COME from somewhere, like it always has—compels them to try to ram everything through so quickly that it can’t be reversed. I hope they’re wrong.

Nothing has been won yet!

The culture war has just begun.

Fox News and the Internet have radically changed the battlefield. They together with voting booth are the shot and blade we will fight with.

Word is spreading, cannon balls are being forged, and military units formed. There are the cities of MSM, Hollywood, Universities and public primary education to capture. Some of our adversaries will die and some will desert and join our cause and like Saul/Paul they will become the most fierce warriors for our cause.

We haven’t won yet but the peasants with pitchforks are forming on the ridge lines and the Liberals look up and see impending doom.

November will be our Battle of Trenton.

Obama, Reid and Pelosi will be awakened in the middle of the night to be cast out into the cold darkness to flee for their political lives.

The Dinosaur Media will be left writhing in pain in the dust and filth as it bleeds out.

When the history of this era is written the names Palin, Kantor, Pence, Arpaio, Brewer, Breitbart, Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, Levin and others will join Washington, Jefferson, Hamilton, Paine, et als.

When your great grandchildren study the history of this era will they see your name? Will the family have passed down stories of your efforts to restore America?

America is at a turning point. Will it die fat, old and drunk asphyxiated in its own vomit or will it reach inside itself and find the spirit of the patriots who came before and renew and reform itself? Will it reach greater heights than before?

The second revolution has begun!

Liberals have won the culture war.

Yes, liberals have won the culture war. But, maybe the tide is turning. Maybe the "silent majority" is silent no more. But after 50 years of incremental and stealth socialism, maybe there will be real change that features common sense, borders, language, and culture.

We are but at the beginning of a long and arduous battle to restore freedom, free enterprise, and culture. Today's initiative may be just a momentary stall of our fall to socialism and economic ruin, but, then again it may be a real beginning, unlike 1994.
