How Do You Stop an Elephant Charging? [Advice for the GOP]
Wall St Journal ^ | sept 3, 2010 | PEGGY NOONAN

Posted on 09/03/2010 2:56:28 AM PDT by The Raven

[snip] ... But there are differences between 1994 and 2010. For one, this time around "the Democrats can see what's coming." They didn't see the Republican wave rising in 1994 until it was too late. "When you see something coming a mile away, you can build a ditch to keep it away." Democrats, he says, have put aside a lot of money for negative ads in the last days of the campaign. "For a year, Democratic strategists said 'We'll pass health care, they'll love us.' 'Recovery summer, they'll love us.' 'We'll run against Wall Street, they'll love us.'" These "narratives" failed. "The one thing they have left is: 'We will put together a lot of cash and run a lot of negatives ads showing why it's not policy that counts, it's that the Republican candidate had a DUI 10 years ago.'"

Republicans, he argues, must determine to stay focused, and not become distracted by issues that are not central to the campaign. "There's the danger of getting sidetracked by shiny things," he says, citing Arizona's immigration law, or "the mosque in Manhattan." These issues do not win new votes,

"Watch CBS try to get Bush family and friends to do interviews to insert Bush back into the campaign the weekend before the election."

What should Republicans focus on? "Spending per se is a palpable issue. The central question is not only taxes or the deficit, it's spending, and you can see this in polls. . . . There is not a Democrat who can say, 'I was not part of the spending explosion that threatens you and your country.' It's the one thing they can't defend themselves against. They don't want to stop spending." ... [snip]

Peggy Noonan is the last person the GOP should turn to for advice. She was totally fooled by Obama.

Peggy on Obama:

He has within him the possibility to change the direction and tone of American foreign policy, which need changing; his rise will serve as a practical rebuke to the past five years, which need rebuking; his victory would provide a fresh start in a nation in which a fresh start would come as a national relief. He climbed steep stairs, born off the continent with no father to guide, a dreamy, abandoning mother, mixed race, no connections. He rose with guts and gifts. He is steady, calm, and, in terms of the execution of his political ascent, still the primary and almost only area in which his executive abilities can be discerned, he shows good judgment in terms of whom to hire and consult, what steps to take and moves to make. We witnessed from him this year something unique in American politics: He took down a political machine without raising his voice.

I hope no one takes any advice from her....

Gingrich the Enviromentalist, that made a video with Pelosi? Gingrich, the guy that kissed Slick willies ring in front of all those seasoned Citizens way back that spelled the end of the Pubbie Revolution?

Gingrich sold his soul and therefore compromised. He should be finished.

The Dems are going to mount a counter attack. It will include a flood of negativity, but they will find something else - probably something big. I suspect that the “financial meltdown” two years ago helped increase the Dem margin in 2008. I also expect them to try to advertise the crisis of the month as a new danger that means we need to stick with socialism. My guess: it won’t work this time, not even with the complicity of most of the news media, but they’ll pour all their effort into it and hope (not pray, because they’re dems, just hope).

I think you have it exactly right: the Dems will go negative. It will be personal and candidate by candidate. It’s the only bullet they have left. They’ll overdo it. Desperate people almost always go too soft or too hard, rarely just right.

This quote should always be displayed whenever Peggy talks about the Republicans or Democrats. It shows her inability to judge a person, or a political party for that matter.

Ok, fine.
But to every dumble incumbent you can do your own ad:
“He voted with the obama pelosi reid cabal 96% of the time. He decided that he knew more about how your healthcare should be admninistered than your doctor. He said that he had the power to decide how much you can earn. He decided that your financial records and loan applications were his business. He decided to spend 700 billion in payoffs to unions and state governments and only 200 billion to fund jobs for you.”

ETC.

I’ve seen a few articles lately that make me think they are testing the “Republicans want to take away your social security” line again this year. Let ‘em try it.

Repubs don’t HAVE to take away Social (In)Security. It is “taking itself away”.

ROTFL! That was my very first thought. Then I realized that we need to take OUR credit card away from them, because when they overspend, they’re not using THEIR money, they’re using OURS!

Is this movie, being release October 8th by SONY the dem’s October surprise?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2DRm5ES-uA

It bothers me that they are giving credibility to crooks such as Frank & Sorros and the film is narrated by an O’bummer supporter.
