Smooth Sailing for Gillibrand
Political Wire ^ | September 1, 2010

A new Quinnipiac poll in New York shows Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D) way ahead of any of her three possible Republican challengers for U.S. Senate.

She beats Bruce Blakeman (R), 44% to 26%, tops David Malpass (R), 45% to 24%, and is ahead of Joseph DioGuardi (R), 43% to 28%.

Said pollster Maurice Carroll: "Who are those guys who want to run against Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand? In match-ups, each of the three gets the generic Republican vote. But most voters don't know much about any of them."

>> New York is an oddball state. We could have as many as three right-of-center candidates running on November 2. <<

Wow, that’s amazing! Usually, it’s pretty amazing if New York gets one right-of-center candidate! *wink*

Seriously: New York’s fusion laws tend to make it easier for third-party candidates to get ballot access, but also tend to demotivate third parties from opposing decent conservatives. In most other states, if a third party doesn’t oppose the two main parties, it loses it’s ballot access. In New York, they can endorse a major-party candidate and as long as enough voters select “Ronald Reagan, the Conservative Party candidate” over “Ronald Reagan, the Republican Party candidate,” the Conservative Party gets credit for the voters, and Ronald Reagan gets credit for both Conservative Party and Republican Party voters.

(You probably know a lot of that, but I’m also publishing that for Lurkers.)

Yes, we are the only state like that. In Connecticut, a candidate can run on another party’s line, but not on his own as well.

I have been wondering if New York State should change that. But really it is the GOP’s fault we are in such a mess, not the fault of the election laws. The Dems are good little boys and girls and don’t run multiple candidates on other lines in order to make sure they lose a seat. PUMA should be the slogan of the NY State GOP.

Actually, I think Simon is probably the only one who’s ever been a ‘judge’ on that show whose IQ appears above room temp. But they ARE entertainers.

It sounds like Joe DioGuardi is a fighter, like my Italian dad. :)

We need more fighters in D.C. instead of the GOP “go along, get along” types.

Rep. Bob Dornan liked DioGuardi, and no wonder, Dornan (B-1 Bob) was a fighter, and pro-life, too.

Pro life and a fiscal conservative. Joe sounds like my kind of candidate. See you at the primaries.
