An Iranian newspaper said on Tuesday that France's first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy deserves to die after she condemned Iran's decision to stone a woman to death for adultery.
The hardline newspaper Kayhan first labeled Bruni-Sarkozy a prostitute on Saturday after the first lady signed a petition calling for the release of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani.
Iranian state television has also accused Bruni-Sarkozy of "immorality." And again on Tuesday, Iranian state-controlled media repeated the prostitute charge.
An Iranian foreign ministry spokesman has said the Islamic Republic does not support the media criticisms.
The attacks surfaced after Bruni-Sarkozy and several other French celebrities wrote open letters to Ashtiani pledging their support. The Iranian woman was sentenced to death by stoning after being convicted of having an 'illicit relationship' following her husband's death.
Iranian judicial authorities said Saturday they have not made a final decision in Ashtiani's case. However she remains under a death sentence and could be executed by other methods such as hanging.
Last week French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner asked the European Union to come up with new approaches to pressure Iran in the case.
Tehran's ISNA news agency said a communiqué from the Judiciary High Council of Human Rights criticized other countries for a "wrong, unfair and biased prejudgment" in the case, which has drawn international outcry.
Several hundred demonstrators carrying photos of Ashtiani marched in Paris on Saturday to protest her execution sentence. Demonstrators called her plight a women's rights issue.

Muslim governments are managing to get an even worse reputation than Stalin or Hitler.
At least those creeps tried to hide their depravity.

Is that photoshopped? There’s the same shot of the two cute fannies in a post above, and no wide load on the right...looks like a man’s hand and the cuff of his sleeve, instead.
It looks like a Lady shaking hands with Mrs Butterworth!
I think the United Nations DID get it right, when they put Iran, the nation as the watch dog for women’s rights. I think we need to listen to Iran, as they have Power, Authority invested in them by the United Nations as to be able to speak about who which women should die.
This sounds like a “Some Muslim should assassinate her” death fatwa.
The Iranians are cagey when it comes to foreign policy, in that their government does not speak with one voice. Instead, different leaders announce different decisions, but each pretend they are authoritative.
This means they can pick and choose after the fact which policy is “real” or not, and disavow the others.
I think they originally threatened Salman Rushdie this way, with a “Any good Muslim should kill him” fatwa, before it was made official by their head Ayatollah.
In any event, the French Intelligence and Security services should take this very, very seriously.
As a diplomatic rule of thumb, internationally, leaders almost always try to refrain from putting out contracts on each other, because it puts their own lives on the line as well. Officially, even the US government has as official policy that they will not assassinate foreign *leaders*.
(Foreign non-leaders, and domestic leaders, such as former Commerce Secretary Ron Brown, don’t count.)
However, I have no idea what the protocols would be for assassinating foreign leaders family members. I strongly suggest that it would be very, very bloody.
What is Iran running, and international last man standing contest. Sheesh, they are always gonna kill someone.
I’m scared to ask.
That’s a real picture, isn’t it?
TTIWTP!!! = THIS THREAD IS WORTHLESS WITHOUT THIS PICTURE!!!
We wouldn’t want to offend our allies, now, would we?
