Visalia, Calif. A Mormon church official was shot dead between services on Sunday, and less than an hour later, the man suspected of the crime also died after a shootout with police.
Clay Sannar, 42, a lay bishop with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Visalia, southeast of Fresno, died after being shot in his office, said Visalia police chief Colleen Mestas.
Soon after the first shooting, a caller identified himself to police as the shooter. Police responded, and there was a confrontation with several shots exchanged, said Mestas.
The suspect was hit multiple times. He was taken to nearby Kaweah Delta Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. He has not been identified yet. No officers were injured, Mestas said.
Tulare County sheriffs deputies are taking over the investigation of the shootout involving the police officers. The sheriffs department did not immediately return calls for comment.
Visalia police continue to investigate Sannars shooting, but have not identified a motive.

Another possibility is "Get under Glenn Beck's skin."
Have the police put a box labeled “DEMON POSSESSION” on their report sheets yet? Seriously!
And they ask me why I pack in Church?

Suicide by cop.

Prayers for the family. The lack of information about the shooter is of some concern, but also indicative of authorities trying to suppress relevant information. Will wait and see if they release more before assessing further.
That is exactly what my husband and I were talking about this morning around the breakfast table. How if he had a gun stashed in his desk he would be alive.
The guy shot him in the foot first, then dragged him out in the hall and shot him in the face. He most likely would be alive with just a gunshot wound to the foot if he had a gun in his office.
I hope this tragedy helps educate my fellow Mormons and all people of faith to fearlessly arm themselves to defend themselves and their families against the haters.

... In a blog entry titled Youll Want to Punch them on Queerty.com, poster BillyBob Thornton wrote, I have never considered being a violent radical extremist for our Equal Rights, But now I think maybe I should consider becoming one. Stenar asked, Can someone in CA please go burn down the Mormon temples there, PLEASE. I mean seriously. DO IT. Angelo Ventura, said, hope they all rot in hell, those servants of a lying, corrupt devil!BAN RELIGIOUS FUNDAMENTALISM! And, Jonathan, warned, Im going to give them something to be f ing scared of. Im a radical who is now on a mission to make them all pay for what theyve done.
Meanwhile, over at JoeMyGod.blogspot.com, World O Jeff, said, Burn their fing churches to the ground, and then tax the charred timbers. While, Tread, wrote, I hope the No on 8 people have a long list and long knives. Joe, stated, I swear, Id murder people with my bare hands this morning.
And on the Americablog.com Web site, scottinsf posted, Trust me. Ive got a big list of names of mormons and catholics that were big supporters of Prop 8. As far as mormons and catholics ... I warn them to watch their backs.
You should take a gander at the Religion formum here at FR.
If the perp ws a homosexual, I think his "reason" might be a little more "personal" than just opposition to the Mormon Church opposition to Prop. 8.
Shooting the guy and then dragging him out in a public area just to shoot him in the face (ruining the possibility of an open casket) is very personal.
What has been reported is the shooter was angry....he waited sometime for his target....he shot him, dragged him further and shot again. The he calls the police after...they end up shooting him.
Wonder if this is a domestic thing?...we shall see as this plays out but there is likely a trail..and apparently witnesses.
Doubtful anything to do with Beck...IMO.
Thanks for the post Jenny. Prayers to the family. I hope that it is soon released about the the person’s “orientation” even though the speculation here on FR is most likely right. This is no more than a terrorist act that will be swept under the rug because it was perpetrated against “religion that discriminates.”
Why on earth have 4 comments been deleted from this thread?
The loud voices could get very quiet depending on what comes out.
Really? Are you (doohickey) and magritte really trying to equate the theological disagreements on the RF with murder and terrorism?
Is it your contention that because we discuss the theological differences we are in league with folks like this?
Just yesterday, I went to the home of a returned mormon missionary, the son of good friends of mine. Renewed many old friendships with mormons in attendance who I hadn’t seen for years.
You assume much and know little.
Cheap, lowbrow and childish shots. I expect nothing less.

And why on earth has this suddenly been posted to Breaking News?
And why on earth is this not moved to Religion?
The lack of detail about the shooter means the reason for the attack coverup is in full force. That means he’s a “protected” group of the liberal media and the reasons were liberal sacred cows. Gay rights or islamic radicalism.
My money is on gay. If it were an islamic radical attack the guy would have shot more people in the church.
We may never know.....
Prayers for his family....

I agree. They were once kept in mental institutions - for a good reason.
