EDGARTOWN, Mass. President Barack Obama wrapped up a 10-day vacation Saturday that was blissfully free of the news emergencies that have interrupted some of his past getaways.
Grim economic reports cast an inescapable shadow over the first family's stay in Martha's Vineyard, and tough tasks on Iraq and the Middle East await the president in Washington after a stop in New Orleans Sunday on the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
But during his time on this lovely island, the president never once had to shed his leisure wear to step in front of the podium and address a national emergency or matter of state. So as the first family hit the beach under picture-perfect skies Saturday for their last day away, they could celebrate an apparent end to what had become something of a vacation jinx.

Yes, but as we know, Bush had working vacations, IIRC.
He’s President of the strongest country in the world; he’s gonna have to deal with interruptions to his daily schedule, even if he’s on vacation.
This is a flat out lie, they know he looks bad taking all this time off so they lie about it. Bush only took vacations in August, Bozo has taken them constantly since taking office and I bet the real number of days comes closer to 100, not 48.
I find it somewhat interesting that Edgartown was where Ted Kennedy partied with those young women the night he drove off the bridge and killed Mary Jo Kopeckne, IIRC.
Well isn’t that special!
How many bottles of Grey Goose can Michelle put away in 6 hours lying on the beach?
What a gag-fest. Unlike Bambi, W actually had a functioning “Western White House” at the ranch. Bambi flits about without any real vacation home, and rarely goes to his Chicago home for a break, so the amount of work he probably does on vaca is 10% that of W.
Somehow, I just don't believe this. "More than twice as much time" would equate to more than 96 days -- say 16 weeks, or eight weeks per year.
I recall the Bushes going to Crawford every August. But they essentially took the White House with them -- GWB was never very far from the job. Meanwhile, Barry doesn't appear to do a lick when he's "out of the office".
Aside from Crawford, though, when were the Bushes "on vacation"? Are they counting weekends at Camp David as "vacations"?
As they so often do, the media appear to be asserting something as fact when it is not.
Yeah...and George W was either ‘vacationing’ at Crawford or camp David, where at least half or more of the time he was actually working!
Freaken’ lying media!
Oh, BARF! What kind of self-respecting professional writes this nauseating pap?
Obama is a lazy bum. Without the “powers that be” bringing him to power he’d be on welfare and Moochie would be a seamstress whipping up her fashion creations for the welfare queens.
48 sounds low to me, unless they mean 48 in the last 3 months.
The boot lickers see Obama's ship sinking. They are making a vain attempt to plug the holes.
Yes, IIRC, the working vacations of Bush gave rise to the nickname for his ranch as the Texas White House. He often invited heads of state there to discuss world issues while he was "vacationing."
And I find it quite funny that this article states, of Obama, that "he never once had to shed his leisure wear." They try so hard not to say Obama is lazy, don't they? Contrast Obama's leisure wear with GW's.
Are you saying that when Obama goes on vacation, he's out of touch with the world?
What about all the times he went out of the country? If they think those were really necessary they are full of it. He is taking all the trips he can for pleasure.
He doesn't have to go on vacation for that. He is out of touch ALL THE TIME as he is so into himself.
Close, they partied at a house on Chappaquiddick. Then took the car with Mary Jo back to Edgartown *Wink-Wink* but instead of taking a hard left to the small ferry that would go though the harbor to Edgartown the car took a hard right and *slipped* off of the bridge...he said he swam the harbor and went to bed at a local hotel.
