ABC News: 'Hundreds of Thousands' At Restoring Honor Rally; Palin Chides AP's 'Tens of Thousands'

ABC News has thrown in the towel on the liberal media's efforts to downplay the huge numbers of Americans who came to the Restoring Honor rally held today at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. by radio and TV host Glenn Beck.

The subheadline of an online report at ABCNews.com reads: Restoring Honor Rally at Sight of MLK's 'I Have a Dream' Speech Draws Hundreds of Thousands of People

Sarah Palin, speaking to Politico during an impromptu interview at Reagan National Airport after her speech at the rally chided the Associated Press for lowballing the monster crowd:

Holding her BlackBerry up with one hand, she lamented that the Associated Press had only pegged attendance as "tens of thousands."

Asked if there were more than 100,000 people there, Palin said: "Oh yeah."

Did you listen to the video on that page? Their political analysis of today’s event is doom and gloom for the democrats :)

They don’t give estimates on that map for the place where today’s rally was.

I know, but one can easily compare the area where the crowd was today with the area on the map on which they do give estimates.

"Million Man" March - 1995

Caption on MSDNC: "A crowd estimated at up to 1 million is seen in this Oct. 16, 1995, aerial file photo..." LOL!

"and that grassy area on the left next to it can hold another 100,000. We can also see there are people in areas to the far right."

You are mistaken he stated the grassy area on the left next to it can hold another 300,000!

That is THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND, not including people on the far right. In other photos of the mall there are also a multitude of people on the lawn on the other side of the street from the road at the BOTTOM of this photo. This image has either been cropped or this photo did not catch those people in its frame.

The rally today shows that we have the numbers and the power. Ignore the lame-stream media; they’re like flies buzzing around the ass end of a cow.

Kristin, here’s what the MSM and the Elites are missing in their quest to downplay this.

Beck is a radio guy with no organization. He sent out a call for people to show up. No mass mailings. No people on the ground in offices doing phone calls to voters. NOTHING.

This should in reality, scare the crap out of the LEFT/RIGHT paradigm.

By downplaying the very, very obviously huge turnout, the elites have made a major mistake and a big miscalculation.

They have now pointed out the obvious fact that they are afraid.

People have more power and they have, thanks to Beck, now realized it.

From SARAH PALIN'S FACEBOOK.

Former Republican Vice Presidential candidate and Governor of Alaska Sarah Palin speaks during the "Restoring Honor" rally in front of the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall on Saturday, August, 28, 2010, in Washington, D.C. Fox News talk show host Glenn Beck headlined the event that drew an estimated crowd of 300,000 - 500,000 at the same location that Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech, 47 years ago. the event that drew an estimated crowd of 300,000 - 500,000

Let's stipulate that attendance was, indeed, in the range of 300-500K.

Who drew that crowd?

Was it Beck?

Or was it Palin?

Name another Republican figure associated with a possible presidential run in 2012 who could draw that kind of audience to an event like this?

Romney?

Huckabee?

Newt?

McCain? (never mind)

Pence?

Like her or not, one thing's for sure. The lady has it!

And Romney, Huckabee, Newt, McCain, et al don't.

One of the problems with that diagram is that the area from the Lincoln Memorial to the Washington Monument has the reflecting pool where the area from the Washington Monument to the Capital is all grass in the center area.

That said if you look at the aerial photos and other photos a lot of people are in the tree shaded area between the reflecting pool and the open grassy area.

How many square feet is the area occupied by people? If you allow 4X4 feet per person or (16 square feet)which will allow for some passageways and areas that aren’t full you can do a rough calculation of the number of people.

The pool itself is 2029 feet long by 167 feet wide. The original Mall was 400 feet wide with another 300 feet on either side of grass. Only 1 side was heavily populated + the center section. Add 400 feet on either end of the reflecting for balance If I did my math right that’s 1,501,457 square feet available or about 93k around the mall. If it’s 9 square feet per person it jumps to 166k. You’d have to add in the people behind Beck and on those on the other side of the mall by the lake. That crowd is pretty thick as well so you easily have 150k+

Good, honest question, okie01. Likely a combination of both Sarah and Glenn, but substitute Sarah for one of the others you named and the crowd would have been, what? Half the size? Maybe even less?

thank you, SrahFanUK for sending me the link to these photos.

The National Park Service used 1 person per 2.5 square feet when estimating the crowd at 0's inauguration. (Scroll down to the bottom of the article.) Imagine using that number for THIS rally.

Another oops from RightField:

The article says average density is 1 person per 5 sq ft.
Tightly packed crowds are 1 person per 2.5 sq ft.

That's the one thing about Gov. Palin that her detractors (liberal and conservative alike) keep missing.

The lady can draw a crowd. Her appeal is broad, it's deep...and it's real.

JFK had it. Reagan had it. Palin's got it. No other politician in my lifetime has had it. It's a rare -- and powerful -- gift.

According to my rule of thumb standards it was certainly between 200,000 and maybe 600,000.

It all depends on the crowd density, but given the location there are three different classes of density in the various environments.

Crowds are always coming and going ~ you may not notice but there are people in and out, back and forth, alla time.

The only Mall gathering I ever participated in that eliminated the coming and going was for the first dedication for the Viet Nam Veterans Memorial. People stood there in places in cold water up to their shinbones and didn't move FOR HOURS AND HOURS ~ I remember it like it was yesterday.

It is always cold for inaugurations and the crowds pack in closer ~ if only to block the wind.
