James Taranto had an interesting article on Best of the Web, that explains the left’s disdain for patriotism and national identity in a way that I hadn’t considered. They see the opposition as “provincial” and unenlightened in the ways of the world. I knew that, but I had been looking at it from a smaller perspective, a frankly more provincial perspective. I didn’t see the left as a world movement, rather than separate movements in separate countries. Some British thinker has coined a term for these self hating leftists, he calls them, oikophobes, meaning hate or fear of one’s own culture, the opposite of zenophobe.

Many of us have witnessed humblegunner (grumblehuffer) on FR threads, spreading a unique form of misery in an opprobrious manner. Perhaps it is an attempt at perfecting an impersonation of Don Nickles. It could be a pitiful pursuit of approval of his amour propre. Indeed, many have seen the typed words on our computer screens, but how many have seen humblegunner's photo?
