On Tuesday, lacking even the excuse that a Rolling Stone reporter tricked him, another top U.S. military commander thumbed his nose at President Barack Obama's policies in Afghanistan.
Marine Corps Commandant James T. Conway, 62, Tuesday told a roomful of reporters at the Pentagon that Mr. Obama's July 2011 deadline for beginning troop withdrawals from Afghanistan is "probably giving our enemy sustenance.... We've intercepted communications that say, Hey, you know, we only have to hold out for so long.'"
Gen. Conway went on to say that Mr. Obama was no doubt "talking to several audiences" when he announced the July 2011 deadline, suggesting that the president may have being coy when he outlined his Afghanistan policy in a speech at West Point last December.

The truth hurts doesn’t it bi-otch.
Perhaps the editorial needs to be taken to Afghanistan...and left on a high mountain outcropping.

I fail to see how a military commander being honest to media, is refusing orders, or threatening civilian control.
Since it continues to be amateur hour at the White House, maybe such commanders will help them get a grip, knowing this isn’t academic—and mens’ lives are at stake, not to mention our national interests now and in the far future.
Article 88 UCMJ is the controlling factor here. If Gen Conway has an issue, and he should, he must resign and voice his opinions then. When any general officer, particularly one who serves as a Chief questions POTUS publicly and is allowed to remain it weakens the office andcalls into question POTUS’s role as CiC.I’m not defending Obama but this is getting very very strange.
Back in 2004 I said that as long as there was one Iraqi left who could give the US the finger as they left back to the States that this one Iraqi would be hailed as the Lion of Fallujah (or where ever) who drove the US out of Iraq.
And I still believe it today.
He’s still following orders from the Community-Organizer-in-Chief, as one would expect from a Marine. He’s just trying to get a vital message to the socialist in our White House. Since the moron he works for doesn’t listen to people in uniform, he’s using the media to relay the message. Obama has handlers who listen to the media for him. There is no threat to civilian control here, just a Marine Corps general displaying appropriate loyalty to his men.
True enough, but that’s not exactly the tone of this revolting article.
Very true. And these men know it better than we do. Obama must be putting a lot of men in harms way. The generals are throwing down the gauntlet. This could get ugly. Fast.
I like yours better...
I believe that if the Generals and Admirals don't get relief at the ballot box by Nov 2012, there will be a coup.
Punk journalism.
I think Gen Conway is retiring at the end of the year.
Wobbly. Please. Nine years and $327 billion into the war and the Marine commandant is quoting a lance corporal about going wobbly. Twenty- or 21-year-old lance corporals can think like that, but 62-year-old generals are supposed to have a better grasp of political reality.
Maybe the country is going "wobbly" because it has come to realize that this is a tribal war for nationhood fought by guerrillas who don't think like U.S. troops.
Maybe the country is going "wobbly" because it keeps hearing about our loyal ally, Afghan President Hamid Karzai, releasing his cronies from jail, where they had been tossed for corruption.
Maybe we can do the math and see the attrition rate from the Afghan security forces that we're spending billions to train is something on the order of 50 percent. Marines don't see lost causes. Other Americans do.
America owes Gen. Conway its thanks for his 40 years of service. It's too bad he chose to end it like this.
Screw the St. Louis Today website. There isn't anyone any of the scum on the "editorial" staff of that joke organization worthy to lick camel dung off the Commandants' boots.
Gen. Conway, Semper Fi, Sir.
you are exactly right. Sadaam was given a hero’s welcome in IRAQ after he got his ass kicked in the 1st Gulf War....for standing up to the “Great Satan”.
Yes, the General is doing this nation, and this pice of sh!t President a great service by telling the truth...on his way out the door.
He's retiring in a month or two, already announced.
