Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (CNN) -- "We are on the right side of history! We are on the side of individual freedoms and liberties and, dammit, we will reclaim the civil rights moment. We will take that movement -- because we were the people who did it in the first place." -- Glenn Beck, on his nationally syndicated radio program, May 26.
It is Glenn Beck's most audacious stunt yet: This Saturday, in the company of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the National Rifle Association and others, the Fox News Channel host will stand in the sacred shadow not just of the Lincoln Memorial, but of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. himself, near the spot where King delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech 47 years earlier to the exact day.
During this event -- billed as "Restoring Honor" -- Beck will aim to "reclaim the civil rights moment" for his cause, and in the process he will continue what he's been doing for the last 18 months: bending the history of 20th-century America like a Philadelphia soft pretzel.
The revisionist message behind "Restoring Honor" is nothing new for the conservative shock jock. In the year and half since President Obama took office, Beck has led his loyal followers on a journey not just to "reclaim" civil rights but much more audaciously to rewrite the sweeping narrative arc of American history from the time of the Founding Fathers forward.

Oh!!! So you do admit the following!!! You do admit that the Marines on Wake Island should have had politically correct tests as to who they might fight with...and Republican Marines should have run those tests by their fellow Marines to "weed out" who was Democrat. You've just "confessed" to the following:
We've got to win the war, people. Can you imagine, on Wake Island for example, marines going up to their commanding officer and saying, "we can't have Johnny fighting beside us. He's Democrat, you know. You do know that they have a conceptually inaccurate picture of policy, how to run a government, America and who knows what, don't you?" And wed be honoring a great tradition because I know that the marines at Wake Island (for example) were very careful to scrutinize each and every one of their comrades to make sure that each one was POLITICALLY CORRECT on their understanding of policy, government practices and polity, America, and who knows what and that if the guy next to them lacked a full and complete 100% politically correct concept of policy, government practices, America and who knows what theres no WAY we want that SOB fighting on our side. NO FREAKING WAY!
How’s those stuffed peppers coming along, AB? You use a rice based stuffing or breadcrumbs? I’ve had both; each has its own little flavor component that I enjoy.
You were right about the zealots on these boards. Boy howdy did I step into it! Elsie even had to nerve to say that my religion is useless. USELESS! Isn’t that rich? A bunch of self-professed Christians preaching their way as the only way to Heaven, and my faith is useless because I believe that Glenn Beck is an honorable Christian man? Wow, that’s a good one, Elsie!
I dated a woman a few years ago who was a “born again Christian,” according to her. We would have deep theological discussions on the phone, but it would always end with, “I will pray for you, because I don’t believe you will be in Heaven with me.” Wow... I mean, just... wow. So because I believe in a Holy Trinity vs. Jesus Christ as my savior, I’m going to Hell. VERY interesting, self-professed FReeper Christians. Very interesting indeed.
Hate may spew forth from even the most pious among us, yet the word of God is codified in the Bible, the Bible I read happens to be the New American Catholic Bible, not the KJV, and because of that, among other things, I’m going to Hell.
I’ll bring lots of sunscreen and some brats, because I’ll apparently need them when my soul is devoured by some Catholic-hating demon.
On Wake Island, you DOPE, the JAPANESE were the enemy, not the Democrats.
In 2010, in this election, the DEMOCRATS are the enemy, not the MORMONS.
How many times does that need to be repeated before it sinks into your uber-thick skull?
Maybe you're right...ignore the conservative message from all the Catholics that post here, because their brethren vote Democrat in overwhelming numbers...say...that Hannity is a Catholic, isn't he?
You don't seem to be very discerning on picking up the exact meanings of certain words, are you?
When somebody says, like who knows what evil? said ... "People need to quit..." (re-read his/her post) that is a "cease & quit" order!
So you agree that we "need to quit" this counter-expression to this Beck lovefest?
Well, duh... :-)
Here, let me try to simplify it so that even YOU can understand it:
Wake Island, WWII:
Enemy: Japanese Army, Air Force, Navy
Allies, fighting by your side: All Americans, including Democrats and Mormons
Election 2010 in the USA:
Enemy: Democrats & Islamists
Allies, fighting by your side: All Americans desiring a return to freedom, including Mormons
Is that really that hard to understand?
Having a negative opinion about what you say is not the same thing as wanting to take away your free speech.
Do you really think it’s the same thing?
Let's focus on assumptions.
Don't Christians take our cultural cue from a certain "Lord" named Jesus Christ? Who are we to follow when it comes to setting cultural priorities? Jesus and the apostle Paul? or samtheman?
Here's Jesus:
"I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him." (Luke 12:4-5)
So does Jesus say, "fear the Democrats & Obamaists?" (No)
Instead, does He say to exercise fear of the One who has authority to cast somebody into hell? (Yes)
So, indeed, our "fear" is on behalf of those who are placing their eternal spiritual lives at risk.
As for "uniting" with cultists behind an anti-Democrat cause, I could probably guess that the folks who the apostle Paul warned the church @ Ephesus about had the bulk in common with the sheep there. Both groups were "religious." So, did Paul play the "allies"-game-don't-divide-us-you're playing? (No)
As Paul was leaving the church of Ephesus, he warned them with this high-priority alert:
"I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them. So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears." (Acts 20:29-31)
Paul's cultural priority? (Defend against the false disciples who will proselytize the flock and draw away men unto themselves!)
Tell me something, Sam: If you did something tearfully night and day for three years, do you think it's rather important? So what? We're just to conclude, "Oh, the man who contributed a good chunk to the New Testament -- what does he know about cultural priorities?"
I'll take Paul's and Jesus' already-revealed priorities to your guesswork based upon bashing those willing to contend for the faith once delivered to the saints (Jude 3)
Right? Apparently I wasn’t in class the day they were handing out the Jesus Christ-approved Bibles. I wonder if the Pope knows that he’s going to Hell? Maybe someone should tell him.
IOW, it wasn't what you'd call a "spot on" illustration...because it can be turned around and used against your argument.
Parse away...
Parse away...
You even mentioning this explains why you defend Beck's message last week on TV that the Mormon jesus appeared in the Americas and founded the beginnings of Mormon "scripture."
So does this comment mean that you perhaps consider the Book of Mormon to be a "Jesus Christ-approved scripture?"
You did pick up on the sarcasm; I hope...
Look, you want to play interpret the bible, go ahead. I’m not into that.
I want to talk about what we are up against TODAY.
You do know that if the ENEMY gets their way, their FULL way, you better HIDE that bible of yours or they’re going to BURN it. You do know that, right?
And it’s not the MORMONS I’m talking about.
You do know that, don’t you?
That there are people, leftists and islamists, who want to take your bible, burn it, shove the ashes down your throat and make you swallow it dry.
You do know that, don’t you?
If you don’t, I feel sorry for you.
If you don’t, you’re a sheep being led to slaughter.
I wasn’t talking about Mormonism, Colo. I was using sarcasm to impart my distaste for FReepers of other Christian faiths who seem fit to not just proselytise but go so far as to say that my religion is useless, worthless, or otherwise condemned.
Glenn Beck used to be a Catholic. I knew him when he started his career on radio here in the Tampa Bay area. He’s a good man. He’s an honest man. He’s a teacher. He’s an American. The fact that people cast him off as a kook tells me that intolerance of other religious sects is alive and well on “the Right,” and we’re now forced to bicker over matters of faith when a GOD DAMNED MUSLIM IS IN THE WHITE HOUSE TRYING TO DESTROY THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!
Get over the petty, infantile, ridiculous religious differences and get with the damn program! We’re ALL AMERICANS. I don’t give a damn about what Beck believes. He’s teaching us history as our Founders intended, and that is infinitely more important in this time of our history than whether or not he believes in gold tablets of scripture or some idiot who started a religion in the US on false pretenses.
Nothing in this post is directed at you specifically Colo, but I’m with airborne; I’m tired of non-religious threads getting hijacked by the proselytizing FReepers among us. You’re not going to convert me. You’re not going to convert Beck. Get over yourself, find the proper forum to preach, and let’s get back to focusing on life as Americans, regardless of faith.
My point is that you don’t understand who are real friends and who are real enemies were in WWII versus who are real friends and who are real enemies are today.
My point is you are out to lunch in that regard so OF COURSE you’re going to twist and misrepresent my example, based on a comparison of those two times in our history.
Somebody perhaps knowing a false Jesus Christ is straining at gnats? If you had a daughter in an online relationship with somebody who pretended to be somebody he wasn't, that'd be straining at gnats? You wouldn't care?
...if they want to bash Beck because he's a Mormon; go for it.
Well, let's see...I started off this thread very specifically. I focused on what Beck said on TV last week.
Now why have Beck defenders like yourself wanting to keep history out of this discussion? I keep trying to be specific on what he said on TV last week about history. Suddenly the Beck defenders are very silent on defending what he said -- that the Mormon jesus came to the Americas and appeared there.
Don't you think that someone who has been talking about U.S. history a lot in 2010 -- as Beck has -- greatly hampers his credibility when he portrays fantasy as world history facts?
(Let me guess: You -- and other Beck defenders -- still won't address this in your rejoinders. You'll want to make this a "Mormon" issue...well, you know what, Mormons have a belief system rooted in history ... IOW, either what they say happened in history occurred, or it didn't. I'm saying it didn't. I'm saying it's poor history to recount it on nation-wide TV as "fact." And what do I get? I get accusations as to not "staying on topic.")
My recommendation to you? Stay on topic. This thread was about Beck's historical claims!!! And I've only very slightly broadened it to include Beck's world history claims on national TV. Beck's historical claims IS the focus of this thread!!!
Now are you going to discuss history or not???
Nope...have a nice day.
