Three men arrested Wednesday were preparing to build improvised explosive devices for attacks within Canada, police say.
They were also raising money to fund improvised explosive device, or IED, attacks on Canadian troops in Afghanistan, RCMP chief superintendent Serge Therriault said Thursday at a news conference in Ottawa.
Two of the accused, Hiva Mohammad Alizadeh, 30, and Misbahuddin Ahmed, 26, were taken into custody in Ottawa on Wednesday. The third, 28-year-old Khurram Syed Sher, was arrested in London, Ont.
The three men arrested are accused of conspiring with at least three others — identified as James Lara, Rizgar Alizadeh and Zakaria Mamosta — and other “persons unknown”, who have been at one time or another located in Canada, Iran, Afghanistan, Dubai and Pakistan, to facilitate a “terrorist activity” between February 2008 and Aug. 24 of this year.
Khurram Sher was a contestant on the CTV reality program Canadian Idol.

Details about the alleged bomb plot are to be released at an RCMP news conference Thursday afternoon. An RCMP spokesman would only say the accusations are "very serious." Sources close to the investigation, "Project Samosa," said the suspected ringleader allegedly attended terrorist training camps in the Pakistan and Afghanistan region, leading investigators to believe the alleged plot may have links to al-Qaida or one of its regional affiliates.
