The apparent anti-Muslim assault on a New York city cabbie by a man shouting “Assalamu Alaikum. Consider this a checkpoint" produced an immediate round of recriminations over its connection to opposition to a New York Islamic Center and an apparent rising tide of Islamophobia.
But as often at the intersection of politics and violent crime, the story doesn't appear to fit any easy stereotype: The alleged assailant, Michael Enright, is — according to his Facebook profile and the website of the left-leaning media organization Intersections International — a student at the School of Visual Arts and a volunteer for Intersections, which recently produced a statement of support for the Park51 project, and is funded by the mainstream, liberal Collegiate Church of New York.
Intersections did not respond to two messages, and the group does not appear to be picking up the phone. Enright did not respond to a message through his Facebook account.
But this appears to be the same man: Police described Enright as a resident of Brewster, 21, and an employee of an "Internet media company who had recently spent time with a combat unit in Afghanistan filming military exercises until this past May."

Last Tuesday August 17, 2010, Rep. Russ Carnahan’s office was reportedly vandalized and “firebombed” at 2 AM in the morning. Hours later police arrested a suspect for the crime and held him for several hours.
Of course, when the “firebombing” was reported local leftists blamed the tea party activists.
Then things got really weird. The police released the suspect and the Carnahan camp went silent. Carnahan employees were seen dumping documents into a dumpster but refused to to talk to reporters. There was a complete blackout on information.
As predictable as the sunrise. The same as the nooses and swastikas. Next, it’l be anonymous, untraceable e-mail death threats.
Scary stuff.
A commie lib willing to MURDER a member of a minority group they claim to protect? All to pin it on the Right? All for VOTES???????
If I were a Black American, or a gay...I would be in fear of my “friends” right now.

Socialists (National and otherwise) and Muslims are pretty much the same thing. The biggest difference I can determine is that one of the prophets is not a known pedophile.

Enright made 'nonsensical' statements to cops; no warning signs at work
The alleged anti-Muslim cabbie stabber made "nonsensical" statements to police after his arrest, a law enforcement source told me just now, adding to the puzzle over what drove Michael Enright to the apparent hate crime.
But the source said investigators see no evident connection to the Park51 project.
As I mentioned before, freighting a single violent crime with political meaning, as seems to be happening with this one, requires a lot of care.
UPDATE: The head of the group for which Enright volunteers, Intersections International, also just released a statement on the incident:
The alleged perpetrator is not an employee and has never been an employee of Intersections. There is a person who fits the description of the alleged perpetrator who has worked with us as a volunteer, but until we get further confirmation of the details in this incident, we cannot comment.
