Vacationing Obamas Hunker Down In Rainy Martha’s Vineyard (play Taboo and Scrabble)

MARTHA’S VINEYARD, Mass. – As heavy rain and winds lashed the Massachusetts island of Martha’s Vineyard, the Obama family hunkered down indoors, with one eye on Tuesday’s primary elections and one on the Scrabble board.

The island, where the first family is vacationing with friends and White House staff, has been raked by a Nor’easter since Sunday. High winds of up to 50 m.p.h. over the last two days have marooned travelers, and on Monday night, dashed a 40-foot wooden schooner against the island’s shoals.

But at the summer White House on Blue Heron Farm, “the rain has not dampened spirits,” White House deputy press secretary Bill Burton told reporters on Tuesday. “They’re playing board games. I’ve heard reports of Taboo and Scrabble being played. And this will probably get me fired, but I know that Valerie [Jarrett, the president’s senior adviser and pal] did not do so well in Scrabble against the president.”
