Is America Islamophobic?

August 23, 2010 Posted by Paul at 10:23 PM

Following up on Time Magazine's article arguing that American may be Islamophobic, the Washington Post takes its stab at pressing the indictment. Post writer Annie Gowen focuses mostly on opposition to a proposed sprawling Islamic center in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The Post claims that opposition is intense, but it presents no data on where overall public opinion in the area stands. Thus, the Post apparently has no idea whether the headline of the story that appeared in the print edition -- "Nowhere near Ground Zero, but no more welcome" -- is accurate.

The Post does refer to a poll that appeared in the Time article finding that 43 percent of Americans hold unfavorable views of Muslims. But which Muslims were the respondents referring to when they answered?

Was it the Muslims they know personally or the Muslims involved with the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a group named as an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation trial? Was it the Muslims who cheered the 9/11 attacks, the Muslims who condemned them, or the Muslims who called the attacks a crime, but claimed America was an accomplice? Was it the Muslim population in peaceful Indonesia or the Muslim population in Gaza? Was it the Iranian dissidents or the Iranian government?

The Post notes that 25 percent of respondents said that most Muslims are not patriotic Americans. If this answer to an empirical question is incorrect (I assume it is, but don't really know), the conclusion should be that a relatively small, though certainly not de minimis, percentage of Americans showed bias in their answer to this question. The conclusion should not be that America as a whole is Islamophobic; if anything, the opposite conclusion better fits this piece of data.

The Post acknowledges that the overall level of anti-Muslim sentiment hasn't shifted much as a result of the Ground Zero Mosque controversy. But it quotes unnamed "religious scholars and other experts" who find the change in tone "striking." That's certainly possible, given the "in your face" nature of the decision to build a mosque on the site of a building that was damaged by the deadly 9/11 attack. But if overall sentiment hasn't changed, one wonders why Time and the Post are suddenly suggesting that Americans are Islamophobes.

In the end, of course, the question comes down to how one defines Islamophobia. If it means disliking American Muslims because of their religion, then I don't think the charge sticks. If it means disliking a good deal of what many Muslims are doing in the wider world, and seeing some sort of a connection between that conduct and the religion of Islam, then Americans may well be Islamophobic. But we would be fools if we weren't.

When Progressive Fascists in the “News Media" have to start their argument with lies they lose.

IF, as the supporters of this center claim, it is to foster toleration and diversity, they would move it since the vast majority of New Yorkers oppose it's construction at Ground Zero.

There is a Mosque 5 blocks away, there is no need for another one here.

That they refuse to move it indicates they are not at all interested in “bringing us together” but are looking at the symbolic value of the site.

Thus the opponents are prove correct and the unthinking bigoted Political leftist clowns pretending to be “Journalists” prove, yet again, to be totally clueless on yet another issue

So maybe it is the wrong term and by using it people can "laugh" at us for our "petty" fears. So we need a better word ... like Anti-Shari'a. To me Islamophobia explaining Anti-Shari'a is like Teabaggers describing the Tea Party People. Both are LIB words and we shouldn't get painted that way. I'm not afraid of them, I don't like them and they are the antithesis of why my country is founded upon. They want to wreck my country? I DO NOT LIKE THAT OR THEM! That's not a "phobia."

For the unknowing....

Are Americans Islamaphobic?

Absolutely not, but they are realists.

When the founding fathers thought of America, their little baby, the last thing they wanted was an invasive force to stifle, smother it, and then overwhelm it and kill it.

Most people do not recognize that what happens in a mosque is sedition. Pure and simple. Islam is not just a “religion”, it is a cult. Larger than that though, it is a political system, it is it’s own government, a economic system (which includes funding new mosque construction), its judicial...all wrapped up in the word sharia. This is inclusive of its military (jihadis) all rolled into one with one intent ...and that is to rule wherever they take root. It is a invasive, systemic infection looking to take over the host once it has quantum.

This is not just a “religion”, but something that cloaks itself in those terms so it should not be given the same treatment contemplated under the first amendment. The Korans Sharia rules are to consume whatever government there is wherever it goes.
Islam is political, and it’s goal is to supplant and replace. Globally.

When the founding fathers thought of America, their little baby, the last thing they wanted was an invasive force to stifle, smother it, and then overwhelm it and kill it.

The sooner America learns this , the better. Some know and many do not, but it is a threat to everything America knows.

Obama? Obama and Company? Should be tried for treason in this issue for promoting the establishment of a foreign government on our soils. He is doing nothing to protect America as per his oath. Also, as a Muslim, he knows this, he know far better, he knows sharia, but is looking to deceive America.

No, just at war with a movement that wants to destroy freedom in the world. The war against Islam must be won.

I’m not Islamophobic. I simply regard as a threat along the lines of Communism or Fascism and feel that it should be dealt with as such. We shouldn’t allow Communist or Nazi memorials in the country (unfortunately we a Stalin bust at our “D-Day” memorial...). We shouldn’t allow an Islamic victory memorial at Ground Zero

why, yes........yes we are.

Americans and American interests have been attacked repeatedly, with ever increasing aggression, since the 1960's by Islamic Terrorists. Islam has not lifted a finger to rein in Islamic radicals. In fact, i recall seeing thousands of Muslims dancing in the streets overcome by joy on 9-11-2001. Islam treats women like property. Stoning and beheading are commonplace. Why shouldn't we be concerned about Islam?

High profile Muslim leaders worldwide, stand up in front of cameras and speak to journalists daily, almost hourly, affirming how much they hate and plan to destroy America.

NO high profile Muslims here or anywhere else, make a public and whole hearted disavowal of the ‘let's kill Americans’ campaign!!

How can it be doubted that Americans came to distrust, and abhor Muslims? Why don't 'moderate' Muslims rehabilitate THEIR OWN image?

REALISTIC PHOBIAS

Type 1 phobias develop after the traumatic exposure to a real and present danger. For example, one night, while walking down the street, a woman is brutally mugged. This incident sticks in her mind and develops into an uncontrollable fear of walking the streets at night. Her phobia would be considered to have a realistic basis.

Here are a few more examples of realistic phobias: a man develops a fear of knives after being stabbed; a woman develops a fear of horses after being thrown from one; a child develops a fear of flying insects after being stung by a swarm of bees, etc.

Jihad Watch

Are you an Islamophobe?

Do you suffer from this malady that is the worst form of terrorism?

Take this simple test. Consult your local Reeducation Camp Supervisor to discuss results. And don’t worry. There is a cure. You, too, can learn to love Big Brother.

“Are You An Islamophobe?,” by Phyllis Chesler in Pajamas Media, August 26:

Are you an Islamophobe? Here is a simple test.

Lorna Saltzman’s Test

Do you favor equal rights and treatment of women and men?

Do you oppose stoning of women accused of adultery?

Do you favor mandatory education of girls everywhere?

Do you oppose slavery and child prostitution?

Do you support complete freedom of expression and the press?

Do you support the right of an individual to worship in her chosen religion?

Do you oppose government- and mosque-supported anti-Semitic publications, radio, TV and textbooks?

Do you oppose the wearing of burqas in public places, schools and courts?

Do you oppose segregation of the sexes in public places and houses of worship?

Do you oppose the death penalty for non-Muslims and Muslims who convert to another religion?

Do you oppose “honor” killings?

Do you oppose female genital mutilation?

Do you oppose forced sexual relations?

Do you oppose discrimination against homosexuals?

Do you support the right to criticize religion?

Do you oppose polygamy?

Do you oppose child marriage, forced or otherwise?

Do you oppose the quranic mandate to kill non-Muslims and apostates?

Do you oppose the addition of sharia courts to your country’s legal system?

Do you disagree with the quran which asserts the superiority of Islam to all other religions?

If you answered most or all of these affirmatively, you are a vile Islamophobe and deserve to be beheaded as the quran instructs.

If you answered one third or more of them affirmatively, you are a borderline Islamophobe and need to receive brainwashing to become a full-fledged dhimmi.

If you answered a quarter or fewer affirmatively, you need a few private lessons in dhimmitude to scrub yourself clean of those remnants of Islamophobia.

If you answered affirmatively to NONE of these, Congratulations! You are a worthy observant (radical–PC addition) Muslim and have a bright future vilifying Jews, torturing women or, inshallah, becoming a suicide bomber.”
