The 9/11 trauma is understandably still a raw wound, and the war against terrorists is far from over. But what does that have to do with a mosque two blocks away from Ground Zero?
The 9/11 attacks caused the largest loss of American life in a single day since the Civil War. Its hardly surprising that we want to honor the dead, avenge the attack and make sure it doesnt happen again. And its no surprise that this creates real unease in how the public feels about Islam. It wasnt the religion that attacked America, but those who did attack were all members of that religion. President George W. Bush made a deliberate effort to differentiate and demonstrate that we were at war with Islamic terrorists, not with Islam. President Barack Obama has gone even further in trying to reach out to the Muslim world. But the message seems to be falling on deaf ears here at home.
The prejudice is evident and hard to stamp out. The flap over plans to build an Islamic center near Ground Zero in New York demonstrates that. So do the astounding results of a poll Pew Research released today.
Most Americans think it is insensitive for Muslims to want to build a center just two blocks from the site of the 9/11 attack. Perhaps it is. But the anger also means that, despite all the rhetoric, we do blame Muslims, in general, for the attack. Were not talking about a center for al Qaeda, after all, were talking about a center for Islam. We wouldnt object if the plan was to build a church or synagogue, so on what grounds other than religious prejudice do we object to a mosque?

Today, we are being confounded within ourselves like never before, the very conscience of America embroiled by the dilemma of how we as a freedom loving nation can reconcile what is in the final analysis is irreconcilable. How do we incorporate, an entity which at its very core exists as an anathema to all, everything this great nation of ours stands for?
How do you incorporate into our society, extend freedom, liberty to those whose ultimate goal is to destroy the very American way of life extended to them, when at the very first opportunity would never extend the same to us, to do only but enslave us.
I say, no tolerance for the intolerant. by us, who
An amazing amount of stupidity and self-hate in that article. I’m not reading the rest.
The REAL question.
Both of these posts today - it is always America’s fault.

But we all know the answer to that question.
Before 9/11 I didn’t hate muslims. Heck, I didn’t even know muslims and moeslems were the same thing. I lumped muslims in with Hindus and Shintos and Buddists and Confucionists, as just another religion that wasn’t Christian. Didn’t really care, just knew it was different.
After 9/11.
I read about muslims, and read some of what’s in the koran, and learned how much they either wanted me converted, in dhimmitude, or dead.
Funny thing about me, I tend to hate people that want me dead.
After 9-11, we had to wake up and take notice. Is this person in the scarf and the funny pants standing next to me "one of them"?
Cause jews and christians are not blowing themselves and as many infidels up as possible in order to create sharia law in America/world...?
Probably some do.
This one does, unabashedly.
Exactly. I never thought one way or another about Muslims before 9/11. That day changed everything.
I don’t hate all muslims I just call their sick ideology of hating infidels to death...out.
But those Amish piss me off but good.
They have sworn to kill non-believers.
That’s not a religion.
That’s an army.
Most Muslims aren’t terrorists
BUT
Most Terrorists are Muslims
Seems like they started in on the whole “Death to America” thing.
Not many Lutherans out there threatening to kill the American Devils.
Lots of reasons for people to not like them.
whats not to hate? screw em.....
