I wonder if South Korea’s reluctance to back sanctions against Iran is playing a role here? I would think it very unlikely - in all probability, this is a concession to China - but not impossible. Obama has sent “tune up” messages to allies before, after all (enjoying those DVD’s Mr. Brown?).

If by “civilized human beings” you meant humble subordinates of the American empire, then I think it will be very difficult indeed. The Chinese doesn’t bow down to any nation.

They certainly don’t bow down to countries which, require huge loans on a regular basis and buy huge amounts of necessities from them, just to survive. Such countries are dependent upon them.

The official stressed that the drill is defensive by nature and is designed to send a message of deterrence to North Korea. I think "deference", rather than "deterrence", would be more correct.
