This is what sets FR apart from the DUmp. Skinner raises a valid point, in that a political site is going to be more united when the other side’s in power and provides a focus of motivation.

At the same time, though, Jim’s never expected FReepers to move in lockstep like mind-numbed robots. Yes, there’s a strong set of core values here, but there’s still lots of room for freewheeling discussion and argument on any number of topics. One thing I’ve noticed about liberals (feminists are especially bad about it) is that they set very strict boundaries about what is “allowed,” and if you go outside those boundaries by not being part of the “amen sister” echo chamber, you’re persona non grata. We’ve got a bit more room to discuss and disagree here, and for that I’m eternally grateful.

You just very elegantly described the

"free speech for me, but not for thee" attitude of the left.

I guess you haven’t been flamed when you didn’t tow the line on FR :)

Exactly right about feminists.

I was looking at the Songfacts page for Under My Thumb by the Rolling Stones, and someone had a pretty long post on how the song is demeaning to women and is not very enlightened. The guy who wrote that completely missed the point of the song and took the lyrics as some anti-woman screed.

Skinner should want Palin to run and win. My God, they would be so united over there he would never have to worry about donations. :P You think they hated Bush, that’s nothing compared to what it would be with Palin. A pretty, God loving, 2nd amendment loving, patriotic, white woman. Their worst nightmare.

low points on FR have been when they did purges of people, e.g., those who were backing the ‘wrong’ Republican candidates in the primaries.
more room to discuss and disagree is better.
