Israel: The Canary in the Coalmine by Norma Zager
I will insist the Hebrews have [contributed] more to civilize men than any other nation. If I was an atheist and believed in blind eternal fate, I should still believe that fate had ordained the Jews to be the most essential instrument for civilizing the nations John Adams
Why in the world should anyone care about Israel? Even many Jewish people are over it.
I mean whats the point? Sure they invent great stuff there, but there are Jews everywhere so who needs Israel? It just causes more trouble for us all. Arent most people convinced without Israel the world would be one big party?
I can visualize the celebration. Ding-dong the Jews are dead.
Ahmadinejad and Kim Jong Il dancing in the streets. Every disease would suddenly be eradicated. Everyone would be rich and no more children would be murdered in Darfur. No women would be stoned in Afghanistan.
Those darn Jews. All these problems, and if they would only go way, we could all be so darn happy.
Talking to someone the other day the subject of Israel was broached. My support for Israel is well known, but my reasons perhaps not, so I will explain.
Aside from the fact I feel compelled as a Jew to honor the hope that Israel represented to the survivors of the Holocaust, the real purpose Ari and I fight so vehemently to ensure its survival is not religious.
Surprised?
The existence of Israel is proof that even after the greatest evil man has known, for one brief fleeting moment, the worlds better nature glowed with compassion and gave the Jewish people back their homeland. This is the symbolic flame of goodness that burns inside man.
Israel is, and will remain, the last hope that evil can be stopped. If the people and country most reviled in the world can survive surrounded by such enemies, it will serve as proof of mankinds better nature.
Israel is a light among nations and that light is goodness. It is concrete evidence that no matter how evil seeks to destroy its opposite, good will always overcome.
True and unfortunate that too many often suffer before evil is stopped, but the better nature of man always remains victorious and standing in the end.
It is interesting that most of the worlds religions identify the Jewish people as the lawgivers. The Torah is a basis for law among civilized cultures. The Ten Commandments are the core principals of humanity and human treatment toward one another. Yes, we were designated to deliver the laws. However, we were also designated to be the canary in the coalmine of civilization.
Why are the Jewish people so hated? It is because the Lord, or whatever divine spirit controls our world, selected them. Jews are the living proof of Gods protection and mercy on earth.
After all the serious attempts to wipe them off the earth, the fact they are still here despite all odds speaks volumes. Their existence has little to do with tenacity on the their part, but a purpose and design far greater.
If Israel is destroyed it will signal the victory of evil and the end of goodness.
From that moment on humankind will begin a slow but unstoppable deterioration into the depths of self-destruction.
Israel is not about religious shrines, not about the tiny piece of land on which it sits, or even the craziness and political everyday foibles that occur among its politicians.
It is a light, a beam and indisputable proof we are destined for good. That mans better nature is dominant and must be so. That as we evolve, we evolve to a higher state that separates us further from the animals.
You dont have to be religious to care if Israel survives. Christian, Muslim, Atheist, it matters not. Purpose transcends all spirituality.
The relationship between the US and Israel is symbiotic.
The United States has always been a force for good. We are the protectors. We fight the playground bullies. We protect the hated, the outcast, the Israel.
We dont always care as much about the law as the laws effect on man.
We place kindness and human dignity above all else.
This is why America has thrived and became the greatest nation.
Why it grew so quickly to overcome all others.
And sadly, why it now is falling from Grace.
America needs to stand by Israel, because Americans want their country to do so. It is in the DNA and at their core.
Their feelings transcend religious differences and are based on the principals of our founding fathers. Their hopes for what this nation should, could and would become.
Israel can never be totally protected in the world. It is destined to play its role as the hated, the stepchild, the despised, as a reminder of our responsibility toward safeguarding goodness and human dignity.
Whether one is deeply religious, spiritual or believes in nothing at all, no one can ever deny evils existence.
To some it has a name, many names, but whatever its title, it is a power to be reckoned with forever.
As long as humankind exists, good and evil will battle for the souls of man and within him.
Israel is living proof our side is still winning.
I will give Rabbi Menachem Mendle the last word.
Intolerance lies at the core of evil. Not the intolerance that results from any threat or danger. But intolerance of another being who dares to exist. Intolerance without cause. It is so deep within us, because every human being secretly desires the entire universe to himself. Our only way out is to learn compassion without cause. To care for each other simply because that 'other' exists.

Another great post on Israel!
Thanks.
Another great post on Israel!
Thanks.
The Christian Church having, apparently, nothing to do with the restraint of Evil or the promulgation of Goodness. I guess.
The Government of Israel is by far, and without question, the most ethical and humane in a very bad neighborhood. That may not be saying much, given the casual atrocities routinely perpetrated by her neighbors, but it's true nonetheless. Israel's existence may indeed be regarded a symbol of victory over the particular Evil of Anti-Semitism, and her destruction could likewise be taken as evidence of an abominable victory for that particular Evil.
But to say that "If Israel is destroyed it will signal the victory of evil and the end of goodness" is to callously ignore the fact that the ultimate and all-surpassing Triumph Over Evil in the entirety of human history was not the re-constitution of the State of Israel in 1948. Not even close, in fact.
It was the Bodily Resurrection of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.
I was always confused about why we support Israel. It was founded as Israel in 1948, but think 1967 has some history for them too. Everyone says that God says that we have to be nice to Israel but if the country was not even established, how is that possible? It is very confusing. I respect FREEPERS enough to know that we have to like Israel which is why I support the country. Before Free Republic, I did not give them any knowledge one way or the other. Although I did visit Israel in 1994 and found it to be very commercialized. It was weird to be offered “water that Jesus walked on”.
(Shrugs). They're a fairly-humane Democracy in a region riddled with brutal dictators and crazy terrorists, they've always offered generous port facilities to our Navy and valuable cross-training with our Army and Air Force, and they help us to develop cool technology like the Arrow Missile System, etc. I definitely think we should consider them at least a good friend, diplomatically speaking.
But that's a far cry from saying that "If Israel is destroyed it will signal the victory of evil and the end of goodness. From that moment on humankind will begin a slow but unstoppable deterioration into the depths of self-destruction." Sorry, but such a self-immolation of the human race in the fires of violent immorality would only be possible if it were possible for Satan to defeat Jesus Christ.
And as was proven in a small tomb outside Jerusalem about 1977 years ago, that just ain't gonna happen.
You can't keep a Good Man down.
The Garden Tomb: 2010 AD and still empty.
"And I will BLESS those who bless you, And the one who curses you I WILL CURSE. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed." (Geneis 12:3)

I believe that the writer is saying that if Israel is destroyed, that will happen because both Israel and Chritians will have failed to stop evil. Christians will fight to defend Israerl because it is good. There is no particular Evil it is all one so if we allow victory there then we are divided and lost.

What the writer said, was:
"If Israel is destroyed it will signal the victory of evil and the end of goodness. From that moment on humankind will begin a slow but unstoppable deterioration into the depths of self-destruction."
That is patently ridiculous in the extreme.
So long as Jesus Christ reigns in glory at the right hand of the Father, it is impossible for "Evil" to "Win". Whether the State of Israel exists or not.
To put it bluntly, what all Christians should desire earnestly in our hearts is to see Israel converted, en masse, into a Christian nation; because we want to see our Hebrew cousins in Heaven.
Sadly, the false religion of Judaism won't get them there. Only Jesus Christ will.
And yes, that tomb is still empty! That Guy is alive!
I believe that God's original covenant with Abraham and his lineage still stands; if they are meant to "convert" then they will convert. If not, not.
The next world will be full of Jews. At least those who aren't idiots.
If we believe that the Bible prophecies are true, then we should believe the Apostle John when he said in Revelation that "God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place".
Most of Revelation (which concerns "The Land", as in Israel; not "The Earth", as in the whole planet; a common mis-translation) was already fulfilled in the three-and-a-half (a time, times, and half a time) Jewish Wars of AD 66-70.
There's really not much left on the prophetic "calendar" except for the very short release of Satan at the end of the "millennium" (i.e., the whole of the Church Age) when he will attack the Church (not Israel) and then be cast into the Lake of Fire upon Christ's triumphal return.
And that could happen at any time, no "great tribulation" (already happened; the Jewish Wars) or nothing. Just... BANG.
In an instant, in the twinkling of an eye. Like a thief in the night.
I think that Revelations is yet to come.
They all looked forward to the incarnation of the promised Messiah; just as we look back on His incarnation.
I believe that God's original covenant with Abraham and his lineage still stands; if they are meant to "convert" then they will convert. If not, not. The next world will be full of Jews. At least those who aren't idiots.
The new heavens and the new earth will be full of Christian Jews, like my wife. (Well, she's one-quarter Jewish, anyway).
It's not being Jewish that gets you "in". It's believing in one particular Jew: Jesus of Nazareth.
To each his own. I'm satisfied with the studies I've done on Revelation; but the interpretation thereof is not a Salvation issue one way or the other, IMHO.
The Apostles Peter and Paul did.
It's why they preached Jesus Christ to their fellow Jews.
I do believe that Jesus is indeed the Messiah, and I realize that a lot of Jews don’t believe that. But if you ask me to believe that all Jews throughout history who did not accept Jesus as the Messiah are all doomed, then that is where we differ in belief.
