Sharif El-Gamal is the developer behind the plan to erect an Islamic community center and mosque two blocks from the World Trade Center site.
Calls are mounting for him and the other backers to find a new home for their center, further away from the site of the September 11th terrorist attacks, but El-Gamal isn't budging.
He is sticking with his plans to erect a 13-story center and prayer space in Lower Manhattan. He likens the project to a YMCA or Jewish Community Center, with programs open to all residents of all faiths.
"A landmark, an iconic building that will have people come and visit it from around the world, said El-Gamal as to what he imagines. This looks like it is going to be the most famous community center in the world."

"Park51 is a community center. It is two blocks north of the World Trade Center site, said El-Gamal. In New York City, two blocks is a great distance. There are some buildings in New York that have their own zip codes. There is such a scarcity of space in New York, especially in Lower Manhattan. Keep in mind this is a small island, so we are nowhere near the World Trade Center site."

Of course, the project got a boost from the White House last weekend when President Barack Obama spoke strongly in support of the developer's right to build the center. El-Gamal says he heard the president's remarks while he was on his way to East Hampton. He says he was blown away.

So much for their desire for ‘dialogue and tolerance’.
Park51??
More like Area 51
It bin nowhere near the sight. So go hef yourselves.
Of course there’s a way to stop this thing. That’s what zoning laws are for.
But for there to be a way, there must first be a will.
Sharif El-Gamal does not think the planned mosque is part of Ground Zero? How does he explain the fact that the Muslim pilots that hit the Twin Towers airplane’s landing gear hit the building they plan to tear down?
No surprises here. Alternately beating their chests and bellowing threats or whining and pleading persecution.
The real question is did these reporters ask any probing questions about Sharif’s background and the financing for this project?
Will infidels be welcomed in this "community center"?
Just an observation....This Mosque on Park Pl is actually only 1 (short) block away from WTC 7 which collapsed a (I believe) few days after 9/11.
Since when is a mosque open to non-Muslims? This guy is lying in his teeth (typical for Muslims talking to infidels).
So are the construction unions going to build this for them?
Hope someone opens a BBQ stand on the sidewalk......
This whole situation is so frustrating. We all know this is so wrong.
I was watching Morning Joe today.
Joe Scarborough is not a bad guy but he was attacking those - particularly Republicans- who are against this Islamic pissing contest.
The Islamics are broadcasting in every way shape and form their motivation, why are even people like Scarborough too dumb to understand the truth?
Glenn Beck identified something like 50k sq. ft. of available space in Manhattan. This dude can pack sand.
Good point. Building Seven collapsed the afternoon of the 11th, leading to a host of conspiracy theories.
If this abomination ever does get built, I expect there will be plenty of New Yorkers willing to take el-Gamal at his literal word on this. To the most legalistic, hair-splitting, nth degree.
