Dr. Laura's Rant on Race Begs the Question: Just Who Needs a Doctor?
Aol/ Politics Daily ^ | 8/15/10 | MARY C. CURTIS

Posted on 08/16/2010 10:45:21 PM PDT by woofie

What kind of doctor is this woman, and why is she still on the radio?

After scrubbing her show's website of the foul rant that prompted outrage -- and lives on in audio and transcript form on Media Matters for America -- Laura Schlessinger apologized. "I articulated the N-word all the way out -- more than one time," she said. "And that was wrong."

Show's over; time to move on? I don't think so.

Professional to professional, Dr. Laura, let Dr. Mary explain why, as offensive as it was, saying the N-word is the least of your problems.

A young black woman calls into your show to get some actual advice about a specific problem: her white husband's family and friends insult her using racist terms and epithets. "My husband ignores those comments, and it hurts my feelings," the caller says.

So, of course, Dr. Laura, you start talking about -- President Barack Obama.

"Without giving much thought, a lot of blacks voted for Obama simply 'cause he was half-black," she said. "Didn't matter what he was gonna do in office, it was a black thing. You gotta know that."

Not only do you ignore the caller and change the subject to get to something that's obviously on your mind and in your heart, Dr. Laura, but you also insist you know the motivation of millions of black voters.

It's not the first time I've heard this ridiculous canard that black people voted for the president based simply on skin color. It assumes that only voters who aren't African-American use logic, reasoning and rational thought before reaching a conclusion. Maybe, just maybe, most African-American voters preferred the policies in the Democratic Party's platform. Did they vote overwhelmingly for Bill Clinton because they liked his smile?

I salute Dr. Laura for her courage.

What courage? She backed down, and apparently scrubbed her website as well. She should not say things she can't defend.

I think it’s worse than that. Blacks have been brainwashed into the thinking America is so racist that the only way to get ahead is to have the government intervene to make sure you get ahead — and if you don’t, to load you up with freebies. They have completely bought into the welfare state as a right and it is the chief reason blacks fall behind on every performance measure. They are told that if there are not equal outcomes on any measure it is solely due to racism. They makes them feel better about their massive failures across the board of any intellectual or financial achievement scale. It also makes it easy to justify their lack of initiative, discipline and ingenuity to get ahead on their own merit. And it’s not just a tragedy for black people. It is a tragedy for all of us and our political system. They are the power base for the Communists who want to take over and destroy all our freedoms.

When Hillary ran against Obama in the North Carolina primary with almost identical positions on the issues, Obama received over ninety percent of the Black vote. Now let them try to spin that.

She has a Ph.D. in physiology, smart guy. That's no physical education or "gym." It's a traditionally male-dominated hard science area that requires a sophisticated grip on mathematics and biochemistry, as well as the willingness and ability to do advanced research in biology.

Criticize her on issues of substance if you like, but this is one area where you can't fault her.

I’d like to add this:

It’s true that in her twenties Dr Laura led a life that was not admirable. I would be horrified if my daughter did anything like that. However, as a Christian I believe in redemption.

This woman has been there and done it, and she has the authority then to say to troubled people, “I have been down in that sink of bad behavior, and I can tell you personally how empty, awful, destructive, and dangerous it is. Don’t do it. I’ve given up all that and now have a happy productive life. Try it my way.” This is a lot more valuable than saying, “I’m a goody-two-shoes who has never put a foot wrong in my entire blameless life, and from my pedestal I’m advising you not to sin.” People tend not to listen to advice from someone who appears to be perfect. They think the perfect person doesn’t know what temptation and misery are.

Furthermore, whatever sin she committed in the past has been more than rectified by her very public penitence over it, and by a career-long effort to get people to live better and more ethically, both through her talk show and through her EXCELLENT books. Have you read them? They contain a lot of wisdom. No, I didn’t think you had.

Frankly, I have made a lot of mistakes in my life. Never did what Laura did, but had my own sins and shortcomings. Perhaps you’ve led a completely blameless, holy life and you can stand before God and say you’ve never sinned. But very few of us can, so if you really want to be sinless in God’s eyes, extend some compassion to those of us who are not as perfect as you. Until then, you might want to put down those stones in your hand.

Yeah - I know what her degree is in. I'm a researcher in a "hard science area that requires a sophisticated grip on mathematics and biochemistry" at one of the largest universities in the United States, and "do advanced research in biology". I understand better than most in this forum what what the academic requirements are for her level of education. Let me ask this: Would you let your dentist take out your appendix? After all, he is a doctor.

Any prominent person who tells the truth about the left will be viciously attacked.

Ditto. Blacks voted for Obama because he was black. They are sticking with him like white on rice because he is black.

“It’s not the first time I’ve heard this ridiculous canard that black people voted for the president based simply on skin color”

The author of the above statement has to be one ignorant woman. More than 95% of blacks voted for Obama. It was the highest black turnout in a presidential election in history. And yet this moron author would have us believe that blacks didn’t vote for Obama just becuase he was black.

It's almost like boxing and "The Great Black Hope".
Either way everybody eventually gets knocked out or loses the title and then there's no hope left.

Naaaaah...no subtle messaging there.

To be “liberal”, one must believe a lot of lies, and be comfortable living in a world of unreality.

That’s what political correctness is all about - maintaining the illusion that a lie is true and that anything that exposes those lies must be punished.

She has training and state certifications in counseling. Anyway, she’s not administering psychotropic drugs or performing real psychotherapy on the air; she’s usually just giving weak and/or selfish people a kick in the hind end, which they badly need, and the study and certs she has are clearly more than enough to be able to provide a lot of wisdom in most cases.

I will stipulate that she’s not 100% right and I don’t invariably agree with her (especially when she talks about ADD!)

I'm sorry, but a group of voters ... aren't applying logic and reason when voting.

Your subject-verb disagreement gets to the issue here. Groups don't apply logic, individuals do.
