Democratic candidate John Hickenlooper now holds a double-digit lead in the three-way race for governor of Colorado.
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Colorado Voters finds Hickenlooper, the mayor of Denver, with 43% support. Businessman Dan Maes, the winner of Tuesdays Republican Primary, captures 31% of the vote, while American Constitution Party candidate Tom Tancredo trails with 18%. Three percent (3%) prefer some other candidate in the race, and five percent (5%) are undecided.
This is the first poll conducted since Maes won the Republican primary.
It shows Maes with a bit more support than he had before the primary and Tancredo with a bit less support.
Hickenloopers level of support has been fairly steady for months, but he has clearly benefitted from Tancredos entry in the race which splits the Republican vote. The Democrat had run roughly even with Maes in two earlier surveys.
Pretty much what we expected. I’ve written off this race and won’t donate any money there. Instead, I’ve concentrated on donating to winnable races with candidates that I would really like to see win. Cory Gardener in CO-4 against that Obammunist Betsy Marxsy, for example.
‘I should add that I havent seen any evidence that the Democrats are encouraging or helping Tancredo here’
I do not know either, but even if they are, it could be without his knowledge, and even if they are and he knows, it would not be a good idea to let the word out.
“If Tea Party candidates are too far left for you, then you will never, ever, back a winner.”
The Colorado TEA party is backing Maes that supports giving illegal aliens citizenship. I guess the TEA party in Coloraod is far more lefty than expected.
YOu got a point about false alternatives (evil vs evil)in there?
‘The Colorado TEA party is backing Maes that supports giving illegal aliens citizenship’
Since I am a Floridian I do not know, but I doubt that is the reason they chose him.
Can you provide information or a link as to when and where Maes indicated that he was for providing illegal aliens with citizenship or action that he has taken the supports citizenship for law breakers? I have not spoken with him personally nor have I attended one of his fundraisers. The compost is very left leaning and I have not found an article in the compost indicating Maes is for giving illegals citizenship.
From his website and his written stance on illegal immigration. I’d provide a comparison with chickenslooper’s stance, but he has not listed on his official website what is stance on illegal immigration is
Illegal Immigration
Early in my campaign, before any other candidate had entered the race, I did not see illegal immigration as a top issue. As I travelled Colorado it became obvious to me that the issue was very important to many. It lead me to consult many in the immigration area to develop a policy more in line with the current wishes of Colorado voters. This is what a statesman should do. With the recent events in Arizona the issue has become one of the top issues on peoples minds.
Illegal immigration is a problem of all borders not just the southern one and it is a matter of national and state security. We must secure our borders with reasonable and cost effective means to assure not one more illegal alien enters our country. As an ex-police officer, I remember taking illegals off trains and holding them until immigration officials could pick them up. That needs to happen every time one is apprehended no matter what country they are from. They must be prosecuted if a crime occurred and deported upon release from jail or prison.
I recommend the following.
Solution:
Strengthen our borders and require all employers in Colorado to use E-Verify for every new applicant and current employees. This web based data base instantly checks the applicants social security number and matches it to the correct owner. Any employer that knowingly hires anyone with a mismatched SSN will be penalized. We must also enforce our current laws regarding the use of proper identification in the dispensation of services and voting rights to our citizens. We must enforce exisiting law per Senate Bill 90 that requires law enforcement to investigate anyone one they have probable cause to believe is an illegal alien and act accordingly if that person is here illegally. finally, I will introduce legislation to add more state patrol officers to the illegal immigration division.
We also need to pass legislation in our state that reduces the incentives to live, work, and transfer funds from Colorado as Arizona has done regarding this issue. I look forward to the opportunity to sign that legislation if you give me the opportunity to do so as your next governor.
Result:
The number of illegal aliens should drop dramatically to those who will stay underground no matter what we do to solve the problem. We will save hundreds of millions of dollars by stopping the manipulation of our public schools, medical services, and social services while assuring that every legal immigrant is insured the pursuit of the American and Colorado dream all of us enjoy.
You've been told a number of times that he has 18%, not 31%. Are you ever going to acknowledge this? Are you ever going to acknowledge that 18% isn't good at all, no matter how "early" it is?
“If this country is ever to be saved we need to sop looking at the R or D, and looking closely at the candidate and his history.”
It sure won’t be a “D” getting my vote, EVER. So that leaves us with picking the most conservative “R” in the primary. Either way, no Dems, not now, not ever.
YOu got a point about false alternatives (evil vs evil)in there?
Yes, but my point was that Tancredo, by supporting Romney in 2008, made the choice of supporting a supposed late comer to illegal alien enforcement.
Now Tancredo is asking that Colorado voters not do the same in the 2010 gubernatorial race.
Add to that, Maes is more of a conservative than Mitt will ever be on all the other issues.
As I said earlier in the thread, if Tancredo was serious about winning and moving foward against illegal immigration, he would have run in the Republican primary.
This was quite obvious when I saw the other day T had jumped into the race. Splitting the vote, Hickenlooper could just stop campaigning altogether and still win in November.
Thanks Tancredo....what an ass.
The Democrats are definitely going out of their way to disavow any knowledge of this, even though there are clearly identified Democrat operatives involved in promoting “Tea Party” or other third-party “conservative” campaigns.
Most of the Democrats’ activities involve getting signatures to put third-party candidates on the ballot. One of the examples I’m more familiar with is in PA-08 Congressional race, where Mike Fitzpatrick (R) is trying to take back his former seat from the current incumbent, Patrick Murphy (D), who won the seat from Fitzpatrick in 2006. Some of Murphy’s interns helped a local gadfly candidate, Tom Lingenfelter, get enough signatures to get on the ballot. Lingenfelter is only polling at 1.6%, but that could be enough - Murphy only beat Fitzpatrick by 1500 votes in 2006.
The Democrats have gone even farther in other places like Florida, where they’ve managed to get a number of candidates on the ballot who will appear with “TEA” as their party identification next to their names, even though those candidates generally have nothing to do with the Tea Party movement.
Actually, after mentioning the Murphy-Fitzpatrick race, I’m reminded of another tactic we can expect to see more of this year. Murphy claims to be a member of the Blue Dog Coalition even though he voted with Pelosi 99% of the time. I rather doubt he’ll be the only incumbent falsely claiming to be a Blue Dog Democrat this year.
I doubt Tancredo needed any help getting on the ballot in Colorado, but it isn’t impossible that some Democrat money could be filtering into his campaign. Whether or not the Democrats are helping him, they’re sure glad he’s there.
The bottom line is that the Democrats know that, outside of safe, gerrymandered Congressional districts, it’s going to be hard to win a majority of the votes. Scott Brown showed that they aren’t even safe in the bluest of statewide races. However, Bill Clinton showed that you don’t need majorities to win elections, so the Democrats have been working hard to put as many little Perots on as many ballots as possible.
Knowingly or unknowingly, Tancredo is going along with this strategy, which is unfortunate. Whether its to fuel his own ego or because he actually believes he can win or influence policy in Colorado, Obama and the Democrats are glad to have his help.
I guess the Dems figured out Tancredo’s price for doing a stunt like this to help their candidate win.
How much do you think it has changed?
For Maes, Very Favorables are 12% and Very Unfavorables 20%
Fourteen percent (14%) have a Very Favorable opinion of Tancredo, but 32% view him Very Unfavorably.
If McInnis and Maes are the best that the Colorado GOP can do, then it is in sad shape. The GOP deserves to lose.
Oddly, Maes could help his chances if he changed the spelling of his name to “Mays”. But without name ID, I guess it wouldn’t matter. People in CO vote for familiar names, as do their counterparts in other states.
It may not take a genius, but it takes a fool to believe that the 18% would go to Maes if Tancredo pulled out. Moreover, many voters may not turn out for Maes who has a problem with his very favorables versus unfavorables. The Dem candidate is the strongest and frankly, has a more impressive electoral record.
Still, just ask Tom McClintock how many statewide races hes won in the general election. (Hint: The number of McClintock statewide victories in California is <1)
Maes has never held elective office. His resume is slim to none. Hickenlooper is the Mayor of Denver. He won re-election for the office of Mayor in May 2007 with 87% of the vote.
This race was over when the GOP had only two candidates, both of them weak and flawed. Tancredo's entry in the race has no effect on the outcome. Tom is just telling the GOP in Colorado to do a better job of selecting candidates.
The NV TEA people are also for Reid, arent’ they?
You are right of course. So many GOP organizations seem like shills for the Democrats.
According to Rasmussen the last time they asked this question, GOP and Dem numbers are roughly equal. Still a lot of independents, who, speaking generally, consist of those with less interest in, or knowledge of, politics. There are a small number of independents who are hyper-interested in politics, but they are a minority.
‘The NV TEA people are also for Reid, arent they?’
No, they nominated Angle. There is a Reid-supported, phony, ‘Tea party’ on the ballot, which ios not supported by ‘Tea Partiers’.
