Good Saturday morning. It’s going to be one of the most memorable – and debated statements – of President Obama’s first two years in office. Remember how much attention was lavished on his remarks about the Cambridge cop-prof confrontation? Well, this is bigger -- whether you think it constitutes Obama delivering on his status as a breakthrough figure on American history, or whether you see it as a breathtaking act of elitist arrogance.

In remarks the White House embargoed for 8:30 p.m., the president said at an Iftar dinner (a community meal to break the fast during Ramadan in the White House’s State Dining Room: “Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country. (Applause.) And that includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in Lower Manhattan.” (Full passage below.)
Key Republicans think the president bought himself a heap of trouble by sounding off on such an emotional issue after his White House had said it wasn’t going to get involved in a “local” controversy. (A
Mayor Michael Bloomberg got great national press for insisting that “we would be untrue to the best part of ourselves – and who we are as New Yorkers and Americans – if we said ‘no’ to a mosque in Lower Manhattan.”
But three months before midterms so close and consequential they constitute a national election, the president is coming out on the minority side of an issue where the country isn’t narrowly split. A CNN poll released Wednesday asked: “As you may know, a group of Muslims in the U.S. plan to build a mosque two blocks from the site in New York City where the World Trade Center used to stand. Eventually the zoning board...building inspectors etc. of NYC would have felt enough pressure to FIND A WAY to ensure this Mosque was either never built or never occupied.
They'll have a hell of a time getting the FDNY to sign off on any fire inspection.
No doubt they have a Constitutional right to build there if any other religious sect does.
That doesn't mean they have the practical means to make it happen.
Declare a homo zone in the area...gay bars welcomed and encouraged. Encourage a Jewish Temple right across the street. Put outdoor restaurants on both sides that serve pulled-pork sandwiches with outdoor seating. Strip clubs. Bars. Allow other religious denominations to put up billboards.
There's hundreds of things that can be done to make them reconsider their actions. All legal.
This is a wedge issue they cannot win and the GOP candidates need to hit this hard.

In 1996, Osama bin Laden declared war on the United States. The full text is available on the net for anyone to read. It took Google 0.22 seconds to find it for me. Al Qaeda is still at war with the US and anyone who denies it is either very foolish or has serious denial issues.
I highly recommend getting a copy of The Al Qaeda Reader, by Raymond Ibrahim. It is translations of the plain words of Al Qaeda, so people can read their threats for themselves. Al Qaeda’s goals are woven into the broader goals of Islamic thinkers: to force the whole world to convert to Islam, to surrender and pay the jizya tax and assume dhimmihood status, or die resisting.
It should be very clear that life in a free society is contrary to the long-stated goals of Islam. The burden of proof must be on any Muslim who wishes to peacefully live here that he must renounce Islam’s goal of forced conversion, and imposing Sharia. Otherwise, we are turning our own Constitution inside out, so that instead of a framework to protect our lives and way of life, it becomes the very means by which others wage warfare against us.
For this reason, any symbols of an Islamic nature that could be regarded by anyone as being connected to the 9/11 attack must be prohibited, lest they be later used for such a purpose even by Islamic supporters outside the US.
