LOS ANGELES – Talk radio host Dr. Laura Schlessinger has issued an apology for saying the N-word several times in an on-air conversation with a caller that she said was "hypersensitive" to racism.
Schlessinger said on her website Wednesday that she was wrong in using the word for what she called an attempt to make a philosophical point.
"I articulated the N-word all the way out — more than one time," Schlessinger said in comments from the opening of her radio show that she posted on her site. "And that was wrong. I'll say it again — that was wrong."
She said she "realized I had made a horrible mistake, and was so upset, I could not finish the show."
Schlessinger said she pulled herself off the air at the end of the hour.
During the exchange on Tuesday's show, Schlessinger said the woman who called herself Jade was too sensitive for complaining that her husband's friends made racist comments about her in their home.
When the woman asked if the N-word was offensive, Dr. Laura said "black guys say it all the time," then went on to repeat it several times.
Schlessinger did not direct the epithet at the woman, but said she used it to suggest how often she hears it, and that it should not automatically be cause for offense.
When the caller objected, Schlessinger replied: "Oh, then I guess you don't watch HBO or listen to any black comedians."

Right.The only reason I edited the word in my posts was to make sure my posts wouldn’t get bounced. You all are right it’s ONLY a word. Sticks and stones may break my bones but whips and chains excite me. Seriously when these slurs are treated as a reflection on the givers rather than their targets, then maybe that could help improve race relatins.

It is amazing to me how stupid or brainwashed Americans have begun. You see blacks calling other blacks nigger all the time. You hear it in black neighborhoods and especially around pickup basketball games coming from blacks and you tell me it is offensive for someone else to say it. To heck with all those that feel that way. You yourself are racist.

I like Dr. Laura, but find her response chicken-hearted. She’s probably worth $40 million if not over $100 and is 63.
Does she not feel safe or mature enough to make a point without kow-towing to the thought police? No, she has another book coming out, “How to please the N in your life”.
Dr. Laura was probably right, but only a few would understand her point. She did not make her point slowly or thoughtfully enough to be understood. Only those who are “post racial” would have understand and Dr. Laura is one them - certainly not those who are fixated on race and getting mileage out of it. She shot herself in the foot by not making sure to expres understanding of the caller’s feelings. CNN is having a field day with this. They’re on her case number one since this can be used to fan racial flames with a lot of knee jerk reaction folks. Also they don’t like her, since she tends to be conservative in her views.
If it offends black people in any way, they shouldn't call each other niggers.
Your post reminded me, a few years ago, Marlon Brando was being interviewed on television, and to make some kind of point, he listed ethnic slurs, just like you did in your post above. When the interview aired, only one of the ethnic slurs Brando had stated was bleeped out. Yep...the "N" word. I remember Larry Elder, the black radio host, railing about this. His point was that every other ethnic group can hear a slur and not go to pieces over it. Asians can hear "chink," Hispanics can hear "spik," etc. But blacks, oh, they're different. THEY'RE special. They are the only group so touchy and thin-skinned that their ethnic slur has to be bleeped! Larry's point was that this hypersensitivity actually hurts blacks, and I think he was right.

Because it looks to me that the use of this word is worse (in normal human conversation; not movies) than George Carlin’s “7 Words...”. And it is not to be used, for any purpose, in any manner, in our conversation or writings.
I listened to this on townhall. Laura has NOTHING to apologize for. In a perfect world, the black woman who called in and BAITED her should apologize.

Dr. Laura just defeated the point she was trying to make to this lady. She shouldn’t have apologized.
