LOS ANGELES Talk radio host Dr. Laura Schlessinger has issued an apology for saying the N-word several times in an on-air conversation with a caller that she said was "hypersensitive" to racism.
Schlessinger said on her website Wednesday that she was wrong in using the word for what she called an attempt to make a philosophical point.
"I articulated the N-word all the way out more than one time," Schlessinger said in comments from the opening of her radio show that she posted on her site. "And that was wrong. I'll say it again that was wrong."
She said she "realized I had made a horrible mistake, and was so upset, I could not finish the show."
Schlessinger said she pulled herself off the air at the end of the hour.
During the exchange on Tuesday's show, Schlessinger said the woman who called herself Jade was too sensitive for complaining that her husband's friends made racist comments about her in their home.
When the woman asked if the N-word was offensive, Dr. Laura said "black guys say it all the time," then went on to repeat it several times.
Schlessinger did not direct the epithet at the woman, but said she used it to suggest how often she hears it, and that it should not automatically be cause for offense.
When the caller objected, Schlessinger replied: "Oh, then I guess you don't watch HBO or listen to any black comedians."

Either the black community decides that they actually believe in the Constitution and our way of life or that they do not. We are either all equal under the law or we have a real crisis.
LLS
This has less to do with disparaging Black people than it does to violate “civil decorum”.
I wonder what Dr Laura was hoping to accomplish that wasn’t worth the stress of condemnation.
How about the word “honky”? Can you also justify, chink, greaser, spik, polok, canuck, russky and so on? Are we at the point now that these words will be made illegal and subject to the courts? Freedom of speach seems to be going downhill.
Who the hell cares what these people are called??? they have not earned any respect in 150 years.
When I see people discuss this and saying “N-word” instead of nigger, I wonder if they will be cowering in the closet when the next war hits.
This is just another aspect of political correctness gone crazy. What is the difference if I say “nigger” or “n-word” if my meaning is to degrade or (dare I say it?) to denigrate? It’s the intent, not the word, that is hurtful. And not to defend them, but the rappers and street vermin who use it all the time know that perfectly well, which is why they use it with impunity.
One day maybe our society will wise up and realize there are more important things to concern ourselves with than “being offended” by words. Sticks and stones, remember?
intent and context
That’s what makes this whole thing just plain foolish. It has nothing to do with the name calling. It has to do with what they want at a particular time.
The”N Word”is the”Scarlet Letter”of today’s”OVER THE TOP PC BULLSH*T”!The ONLY REAL RACISTS are THE LIBERALS who ID EVERYONE BY RACE,GENDER,SEXUAL PREFERENCE,etc.,etc.,.And it’s ALL about keeping certain people on”THE DOLE”(and VOTING RIGHT)!!This is “The NEW PLANTATION”!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Blacks say “nigger” all the time, and I mean ALL the time.. RACISM is when blacks say only THEY are allowed to say it. Them you-know-what-ers. (I’d say “Peace. Out.” but I might need permission to say that)
If you really want to give these people a smak-down, just refer to them as “bright, clean and articulate”.
Up here in New York State we get a lot that are rabid.
Yup. The infamous “Naggers” episode. Laughed my ass off.
You are 100%, totally and completely right about that.
That is no embarassment at all. Words' full meaning derives from the context. You know that perfectly well in general, but make an exception for the N-word. The content given to it in a conservation of two blacks is different because the context is different.
It's like saying, "I don't understand why people make such a big deal of the fact that the murderer used a gun --- our military uses guns all the time." Well, you'd say, that is silly: the contexts of using a gun are totally different. Words that were historically hurtful are just like guns: whether they inflict wounds and whether those wounds are justifiable depends on the context.
Exactly. I’m tired of this bull where I can’t even say a word because someone doesn’t like it. Too bad - it’s a WORD. The word is nigger. Don’t like it? Go the other friggin way or stop me from using it.
Van Gough was a genius in his field too and look what he did, to himself!
I agree saying the “N-Word” instead of “nigger” is like saying, “shoot”, it’s really “shit” with two “O’s”. From the late George Carlin.
