Former San Diego radio personality Dr. Laura Schlessinger finds herself in yet another pot of hot water. Yesterday on her national radio program, the outspoken host made what many are labeling racist remarks, and repeatedly used the n-word.
Her words: "Black guys use it all the time. Turn on HBO and listen to a black comic, and all you hear is nigger, nigger, nigger. I don't get it. If anybody without enough melanin says it, it's a horrible thing. But when black people say it, it's affectionate."
Later, the on-air discussion with a caller identified as a black woman went like this:CALLER: Is it OK to say that word? Is it ever OK to say that word?
DR. LAURA: It depends how it's said. Black guys talking to each other seem to think it's okay.
CALLER: But you're not black, they're not black, my husband is white.
DR. LAURA: Oh, I see, so a word is restricted to race. Got it. Can't do much about that.

Elvis Costello, too.
I read it in highschool and once after.
Now teachers take a marker or pen and cross out “objectionable” words.
Back when my wife was a Lenin Pioneer in the USSR she would cry hearing about how badly Black people were treated in the United States. Of course the Blacks enjoyed more rights and more materialistic advantages than her engineer parents in the USSR.
But guess the slang word everyone used in the Eastern Ukraine for Black people that they so sympathized with? They pronounced it “nigger”.
I recall Bill Clinton using The Word and not a peep of outrage.
If I may, all moms are not, er, equal. There are mothering mothers and there are those who are anything but.
I suggest we don’t have enough information to make a judgment about her relationship with her now deceased mother.
If that makes me racist, homophobic, xenophobic, or whatever.....I can live with it.
She should not have apologized. The way she used it was to make a point, not to call a name. Hyper-sensitivity, ‘getting your feelings hurt’ — honest to goodness, the libs seek to control every word you utter that is not in THEIR rule book.
Guess what? I’m not playing. Good for Dr. Laura to cross this line.
Brave woman. I wish she’d stuck to her guns.
I suppose white people should lay claim to the word “cracker” and ban all other ethnicities from using “the C word” EVEN when referring to Saltines or other objects of similar design.
Depends on how bad the estrangement was. I don't know Dr. Laura's history with her mom. I do know that some parental relationships are so toxic that a grown child should not be required to take care of their parent.
She don't get it. Whites cannot use this word as the sound of it makes African,Afro-American's go crazy and get offended...Now, it's okay if African,Afro-American's use the word....
Good for her. It’s about time. Only race cowards would object to what she said.
Ah, so right you are!!
Ya know, even though I'm a full blooded Apache and my wife is a Mongol from eastern Mongolia, we find the word cracker extremely offense.
Lenny Bruce (forget his politics for a moment) said that by prohibiting the utterance of an offensive word, we give that word undeserved POWER. His solution was to repeat an offensive word so many times that it becomes meaningless - like Dr. Laura was doing.
Someday there will be a “reset” moment. Every culture reaches it once cultural abstraction exceeds all reason and reality. I am at my limit for tolerating what is outright foolishness.
I’m tired of dealing with those who reason like children and are as principled as whores.
Laura doesn’t have to apologize for anything. The old saw that blacks can use the “N” word but it is forbidden for its use by whites is silly on its face. How about the black use of cracker and other derogatory words in describing whites and other non-blacks.
I’d like to add, cracker is bad enough, but when used with a southern accent, such as, “Craka” it’s even more offensive.
