N.H. legislator resigns over Palin remark
Politico ^ | August 12, 2010 | Ben Smith

A New Hampshire Democrat who joked about Sarah Palin's death has resigned from the state's House of Representatives and ended his campaign for reelection, he announced today in a public letter to the House Speaker apologizing for bringing "this House into disrepute."

Rep. Timothy Horrigan had speculated yesterday on Facebook that a slain Palin would become a martyr.

"I don't wish Sarah Palin dead ... but not merely for compassionate reasons. I also want her to live because a living Sarah Palin is less dangerous than a dead one."a dead Palin is more dangerous than a live one," he wrote.

(Horrigan is not to be confused with the other New Hampshire Democratic activist who was rebuked yesterday for expressing the wish that Palin and Levi Johnston had been on the downed airplane carrying Ted Stevens.)

Horrigan wrote before resigning that he "would like to offer a specific apology for making comments about Sarah Palin which could be --- and were --- misconstrued. She is, as far as I know, not a bad person at all --- and certainly she deserves to live a long and happy life."

In his letter to Speak Terie Norelli he wrote, "I apologize for thoughtless remarks I made which have brought this House into disrepute."

An eccentric liberal Democrat from the Durham area, Horrigan's causes had included repealing New Hampshire's 200-year-old ban on adultery.

Yep, I’m surprised he had the decency to resign.

Dems don’t resign over statements like this. He must have been expecting to be defeated in Nov and wanted to save the expense and work of campaigning.

Only Republicans resign when pressured by public opinion.

Of course if public opinion threatens to defeat the whole Democrat Party, they could be convincing in pushing him to quit.

“In all fairness to Horrigan, many people in this forum have said effectively the same thing about Obama. They might not have used the same exact words, but the thought was essentially the same.”

You are wrong. I have never seen anything here that could be interpreted as one wishing Obama dead.

Are you a troll?

A Democrat resigns, presumably out of shame for something he said?

I’d say that was a hopeful sign .... or maybe New Hampshire doesn’t pay enough to its legislators or give them enough opportunity for graft for them to cling to their positions like barnacles on an old boat.

I didn't read where Horrigan said anything that could be interpreted as wishing Palin was dead, either.

He was commenting on someone else doing so, and said that he was concerned Palin would become a martyr. In a backhanded way, he was wishing against her demise.

And that's exactly what I've seen posted at FR about Obama, repeatedly. Given how everyone is reacting to this guy's comments, I'm simply cautioning everyone to be as respectful as they are demanding from this guy.

Are you a troll?

I'll suggest you click on the link to my "About" page, look at the date, and decide for yourself.

At the state and local levels, there are some dimowits who still have a conscience. At the national level, not so much.

Well at least he had the decency to resign. I’d expected him to try and bluster his way through it.

Big Difference:

An ELECTED MEMBER OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY utters this comment. He is a public office holder (not a private citizen).

I must be a bad person.

First thing I did when I read this was check for the “satire” tag. Next, I went to the source, just to make sure it wasn’t satire. Only then did I believe that a Democrat would actually resign over an ethical faux paux.

We need people like you to run for office and we need to vote. I was shoked to find that in the Town election 316 out of 796 voters voted.

I know, Bill. I have a feeling getting Republicans to the polls won’t be as much of a problem in November. FYI - I’m going to be working for Ovide Lamontagne this month and I would suggest everyone here in NH vote for him in the Senate primary.

All you gotta do is just let them keep talking. Let people see who they really are. They will take themselves out - well, the really dumb ones will.

Ovide is a good man with the right views on the issues but his last outing wasn't to impressive, Binnie is a RINO and Kelly is squishy, Ovide might the man. CHE has to go.

Maybe Ovide should have run against Che.
Thanks for the ping, Bill. Got any FReeps planned. I’m retired now and have more time on my hands.

You could just replace Obama for Palin in his remarks.

Yep, I’m surprised he had the decency to resign.

I wouldn't ascribe to "decency" the fear of a mob.

No nothing planned. A little late for Ovide to do that, kinda looks like Guinta has a lock on that as it looks now. I talked to Mahoney, gave him a rather bad time, which I am sorry about, maybe, for some of the stupid things the RNC did, he was a committeeman.

For me right now, Kelley, Stephen, Guinta, could change, I am getting old and crotchety.
