One in twelve babies born in the U.S. in 2008 were the offspring of illegal immigrants, according to a new study, a statistic that could inflame the debate over birthright citizenship.
Undocumented immigrants make up slightly more than 4% of the U.S. adult population. However, their babies represented twice that share, or 8%, of all births on U.S. soil in 2008, according to the nonpartisan Pew Research Center's report.
The report, based on Census Bureau data and analysis of demographic characteristics of the undocumented population, also found that the lion's share, or 79%, of the 5.1 million children of illegal immigrants residing in the U.S. in 2009 were born in the U.S. and therefore citizens.
About 11 million undocumented immigrants live in the U.S. Latinos account for 75% of undocumented U.S. immigrants and about 85% of the births among that population.
Amid a heated national debate over illegal immigration, some Republican politicians have been calling for changes to the Constitution's 14th Amendment,
Late last month, South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham announced his support for reconsidering automatic U.S. citizenship for babies born to undocumented immigrants.
Recently, Mr. Graham's idea has been embraced by several other lawmakers, including Sens. John McCain and Jon Kyl of Arizona, where state legislators passed a controversial law to quash illegal immigration.
Legislation to amend birthright citizenship stalled when it was introduced in the past decade in the House. It would require a vote of two-thirds of the House and Senate, and would have to be ratified by three-fourths of state legislatures.
Proponents of amending the 14th Amendment, which was enacted in 1868, say it was intended to guarantee citizenship to freed slaves after the Civil War, not the offspring of illegal immigrants.

1/3 of births one parent is illegal/one parent is legal or citizen. At least 1/3, probably more than 1/3 but less than 1/2.
So does this statistic include or exclude those of mixed parentage?
This should blow the ‘10-12 million’ number to bits. Such BS trying to tell us that there is only 12 million illegals in the U.S.

Of course it wasn’t intended for illegal immigrants in 1868 because there was no such thing as an illegal immigrant in 1868. The concept did not exist in the USA. Nobody was required to get permission of the nanny state to enter the USA.
It was in the 1920s that the USA first passed laws making it a misdemeanor to enter the USA without playing mother-may-I. And it is still a misdemeanor less serious than parking in a handicap spot.
Prior to the 1920s immigration law said it was illegal only for undesireables to enter the USA (Murderers, prostitutes, slothful, Chinese, etc.).
Throughout US History it has ALWAYS been the pride of patriots that we welcomed anyone of good moral character.
We need to return to the historic immigration policy based on character. Government immigration policy should focus on
- terrorists
- murderers, rapists, DUI drivers, hit-n-run drivers, etc
- welfare parasites, truly undesireables

You don't amend an amendment do you? Nor, strictly speaking, do you repeal an amendment. You create a new amendment that cancels or otherwise counteracts another amendment if that's what needs to be done.
Why can't we just have a whole new amendment that clarifies that children born of illegal border crossers are not American citizens?
Here's a couple of questions I have about these "anchor babies":
Are they assigned a Socialist Security Number at birth?
Are they required to obtain a passport at a certain age?

I’ve been pushing those ideas here and everywhere else on the web for years, and I’ve gotten almost zero help. Instead, people think attending rallies on the border or waving signs are going to be effective despite the fact they haven’t been and won’t be.
It may be a novel idea, but if we just kept the illegals out of the country, we would not have anchor babies. Graham, McCain, Kyle and their fellow travelers don’t want to take the steps necessary to actually solve the problem, but would rather talk about a constitutional amendment they know can’t be enacted.
Like all US citizens they're entitled to a SS number and a passport but aren't automatically given one or required to have one.However,if they wind up on welfare (which,I'll wager,happens 98% of the time) I think they're required to have a SS number.
It’s soon getting to the point America isn’t even a country anymore. With each passing day, it seems closer to being just a landmass teeming with people grabbing parts of it. The future is dark.
I'll bet it's closer to 30 million. And, unfortunately, some day, they'll be voting.
