Bizarre. I can’t even think what word they might have meant. I certainly wouldn’t consider a couple of murderers to be “vigilantes” by any stretch.

Maybe the US needs more vigilantes.
I'm sure the media would term it 'vigilantism' if a group of people were to, say, tar-and-feather their politician and ride him out of town 'on a rail.'
