Saudis Hope Giant Clock Will Set 'Mecca Time' (It's Mecca Time)

Muslims around the world could be setting their watches to a new time soon when the world's largest clock begins ticking atop a soaring skyscraper in Islam's holiest city of Mecca.

Saudi Arabia hopes the four faces of the new clock, which will loom over Mecca's Grand Mosque from what is expected to be the world's second tallest building, will establish Mecca as an alternate time standard to the Greenwich median.

The clock is targeted to enter service with a three-month trial period in the first week of the holy month of Ramadan on or about August 12, according to the Saudi state news agency SPA.

Re: #46... Y'know, if that building were to topple just right, it could easily smash the black cube and meteorite.

Just sayin' - just think how displeased Allah would be.

Saudi Arabia will test what it is billing as the world's largest clock in the holy city of Mecca during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, the official news agency reported Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2010. The tallest tower in the complex will stand as the tallest building in Saudi Arabia, tallest and largest hotel in the world, with a planned height of 601 m (1,972 ft), including a 200 ft spire. Upon completion, the structure would have the largest floor area of any structure in the world with 1,500,000 m2 (16,150,000 sq ft) of floorspace.

Looks like those hideous buildings Russian communists built during the coldwar, just more tackier. Reminds me of the Warsaw palace of arts and culture in Poland.

The Saudis have declared their entire country as sacred ground, is the main reason.

I think technically no infidel can set foot there according to some ancient Muslim document, and this is one of the things that set bin Laden off- that the Saudi royal family does business with infidels and allows infidels to set foot there.

The clock will be reset each day as mullahs at the four corners of the city watch for the sun to rise, check their Swiss watches, and then dispatch messengers on camels to the Mo clock to report the time of sunrise. A little time will be lost as the messengers race to the clock, and a little more as the clock mullahs use the revered AlGore Bra to figure out what time it is or was when the sun came up at Mecca. Eventually there will be a desire to have an atomic clock in Mecca. And some one of Islam’s many admirers will n*** ‘em, or the Miller Brewing Company will sue them on the grounds that “mecca time” infringes on it’s copyrighted “miller time” promotional slogan.
But actually, it may be okay in the end. Once we get used to happy hour at five o’clock mecca, we’ll know when to barbecue the goat meat, break out the Millers, stone the women we’ve buried to the waist, bugger beasts, boys,or both, hijack ships, put on our bomber jackets, and other important activities. and learn to “keep regular” so when the mo’s should be praying, we can be good little shi.... and hit the rest rooms big time.
