It's probably also worth noting this Wall St. Journal article from last month -- with a subheadline warning: "Back to Stone Age" -- which describes how "paved roads, historical emblems of American achievement, are being torn up across rural America and replaced with gravel or other rough surfaces as counties struggle with tight budgets and dwindling state and federal revenue." Utah is seriously considering eliminating the 12th grade, or making it optional. And it was announced this week that "Camden [New Jersey] is preparing to permanently shut its library system by the end of the year, potentially leaving residents of the impoverished city among the few in the United States unable to borrow a library book free."
Does anyone doubt that once a society ceases to be able to afford schools, public transit, paved roads, libraries and street lights -- or once it chooses not to be able to afford those things in pursuit of imperial priorities and the maintenance of a vast Surveillance and National Security State -- that a very serious problem has arisen, that things have gone seriously awry, that imperial collapse, by definition, is an imminent inevitability? Anyway, I just wanted to leave everyone with some light and cheerful thoughts as we head into the weekend.

The last thing they want to touch are the bloated budgets for moochers.
They always cut (or threaten to cut) police, firefighters, teachers, libraries, road repair, etc.
But the sacred cows of free stuff for the moochers go untouched.
We can't afford schools because the government takes $25,000 per pupil (Heritage Foundation number) in taxes away from citizens and gives it to liberal public propaganda indoctrination prisons. This supported by many who claim to be conservative and not just a few Freepers.
Sounds fair to me.
My sweetie teaches on the southside of Chicago; I know all about it.
Roger that. Libraries and public parks are always the first to be threatened.
What do you think?
On Friday, this rock festival was taken over by a pop singer. Thats right: Lady Gaga. Gagas exuberant concert in front of 80,000 fans was a condensed presentation of her Monster Ball, which continues its seemingly endless world tour.
Trust me, billions are poured into Camden each year.
Most of that disappears into the pockets of corrupt black Democrats who control the city.
Would private foundation libraries be a good option? I’ve seen and worked with churches that had small libraries. Free reading material plus volunteer help on job hunting and resume writing could be a community service + outreach.
Don’t get too worked up. Go and red the whole article and have a barf bag handy. It is possible to look at symptoms and misjudge the cause of the disease. This author is a lefty who blames the financial woes on the Rich, whoever they are.
“Roger that. Libraries and public parks are always the first to be threatened.”
You forgot women and children.
don’t worry - the government will expand & its union controlled employees will get lifetime pensions fully funded by your tax dollars.
Comes up short you say?
Again, don’t worry - more taxes will solve everything.
BTT
Out in the country where I live they are extending the county road system and paving dirt roads. Hmmm... must be those shovel ready jobs. Haven’t seen any of those $10,000 signs though.
In a way, it is, but it started with Bush Senior. I remember the debate in which the guy with the pony tail asked about government being “Daddy”. I thought surely that Bush would put the guy in his place for asking such an inane question, but no! H.W. responded as if it were a perfectly legitimate question. I knew then we were doomed.
Unfortunately I’ll take that as an unequivocal yes.
Money doesn’t matter if we are left to sit in the dark with the water off because food stamps were more important than utilities, but the banks are closed, the mail men no longer bring checks and you do not care because the criminals who stole the last one are free and waiting to do it again.
We’re screwed ....
As long as teachers can get Viagra with their contracts everything is gonna be alright!
Re your post #9, I notice that you have been on FR about the same amount of time that I have. From the getgo I understood that posting profanity and gutter language was not acceptable. Apparently this has not come to your attention.
