The hidden reduction in US Military Strength
8/7/10 | Rainman

This morning I spoke with 2 of my children, both in the military, one in the Navy, the other in the Air Force. They both told me, independent of one another, a remarkably similar, and if true, chilling tale that I cannot find any other stories on.

What I heard from my child in the Navy was that he is noticing a large number of sailors being discharged from the Navy right now. Most of these seem to be sailors with good rank and service, who dont really want to leave the Navy, but they are approaching the time when they will be able to earn a military pension. Prior to getting to that point, the Navy is getting rid of them. At the same time, this makes no sense to him, because he is also seeing a lot of recruiting going on, and fresh recruits coming in.

A few hours later, I heard from another child in the Air Force. This child had just earned a promotion, which was to go into effect Aug 1. Now they are being told that the promotion will not be put into effect until September, if ever. Word has come down that the Air Force is to reduce ranks and they are choosing at present who gets to stay, and who "gets" to leave, and he was told that his enlistment may end very soon.

I know the military has processes where you need to advance or leave, that is not what this is. This is forcing people out who are earning advancements. This is striking me as something dark and a-typical.

My open question is this ... and I am hoping that some reporter may read this and start to investigate. Is the Obama administration launching a process to systematically weaken the American military in secret? Why would you get rid of experienced military personnel who do not want to leave, and replace them with fresh recruits?

The first thing that occurs to me is that there is an immediate reduction in cost by eliminating higher paid personnel with low ranking recruits. By getting rid of those close to earning a pension, there is also a long term reduction in obligations.

At the same time however, you give the public the appearance of maintaining the military ... yet it becomes weaker and less experienced. Right now, as I said, this is nothing but my own musings, but I would really appreciate it if someone could investigate this.

It’s happening in the other services, too. Reduction. It’s scary, I agree.

Let me guess. The minorities get to stay and the whitey’s gotta go?

Sounds like a RIF (Reduction in Force) is happening.

Officials announce fiscal 2010 force management measures

So you put in 16-18 years in uniform looking forward to the day you can retire and spend time with your family (time that you missed while serving away) and then they tell you that you cannot re-up? Am I understanding this correctly?
If so, then it’s “git a rope” time.

That is exactly what it sounds like, but this is happening right now ... and your article points to this needing to have been completed by last May. Have your heard anything more recent?

I don’t know what’s going on. I haven’t heard that from my son in the Navy. I would encourage anyone who can to hang in there to see what November brings. If the Democrats aren’t swept by the bushel in November, the nation is finished, anyway, and probably won’t be worth defending. If the Democrats aren’t really swept in November, we will know the majority of Americans want the nation to stop existing.

Actually sometimes I think a huge portion of our military is a complete waste of money. Why? Because lately we haven’t had the balls to use it, so why spend money for it in the first place.

More than weapons, what we need is some leadership that will fight a war to win it using whatever it has at its disposal.

Actually, what it sounds like is worse than not being allowed to re-up. They are being discharged (fired) without cause.

Contrary to what many people believe, pensions are not awarded for long and faithful service any longer. Today they are provided as rewards to political supporters. Every pension nickel denied to military personnel today means an extra nickel to cover the pension of DC bureaucrats. Wait until 0bama announces his plan for the government to guarantee the pensions of the SEIU, teachers, UAW, Teamsters, etc, etc, etc.

The USMC is undergoing a 10 pct reduction. I know it from work but have never seen it published.

The Dems have decided to reduce the military because the war is over and they need a “peace dividend” to fund their expanded welfare schemes. Remember, the true socialist democrat sees the US military as the enemy of this country and their power. It really bothers them that members of the US Armed Forces actually belive in their oath to “protect and defend the Constitution of the United States,” a document they disregard.

I cannot say the same of the Army. They aren’t stop lossing anymore but they are still trying to get everyone who leaves active duty to join the reserves. I have not heard of anyone denied reenlistment.

No not recently, The process may of been delayed for various reasons. Deployements etc...

I survived a few RIFs myself and there are various reason why people are RIF'd. Most cases I've seen where sections pruned out poor performers and ROADs (Retired on Active Duty). Another reason where you need to prune out people that are Top Heavy (Too many SNCOs)career fields or just overmanned. I was in a top heavy career field and was given the option to retrain into Intel or get out. I went to Intel.

If your sons are in an overmanned or Top Heavy career field the Military most likely give them the option to retrain. If they decline they will be RIF'd

If they are good troops they don't have anything to worry about. Good luck and don't worry about it.

Germany and Japan are lost. We should withdraw.

That is so much. If it wasn’t for the sacrifice and loyalty of our entire nation, the Axis would have won. We do not have that anymore.

Another military service is offering early outs to enlisted men and women, and postponing needed repairs to equipment until after the next fiscal year. That means down time for hundreds of military that depend upon the equipment to carry out their mission.

They are also encouraging those near or at retirement to leave the service. I did not think that this was across the board for all military services.

It’s the McDonalds McBusiness McModel, concerned only with costs.

Hire at low wages, work the crap out of people on the strength of promises of advancement, then fire them and hire more suckers at low wages.

I’m at a loss to see how this is a good idea.
