According to two research scientists the mystery of vanished ships and airplanes in the region dubbed "The Bermuda Triangle" has been solved.
Step aside outer space aliens, time anomalies, submerged giant Atlantean pyramids and bizarre meteorological phenomena ... the "Triangle" simply suffers from an acute case of gas.
Natural gasthe kind that heats ovens and boils waterspecifically methane, is the culprit behind the mysterious disappearances and loss of water and air craft.
The evidence for this astounding new insight into a mystery that's bedeviled the world is laid out in a research paper published in the American Journal of Physics.
Professor Joseph Monaghan researched the hypothesis with honor student David May at the Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.
The two hypothesized that large methane bubbles rising from the ocean floor might account for many, if not all, of the mysterious disappearances of ships and aircraft at specific locales around the world.
Researcher Ivan T. Sanderson identified these mystery areas during the 1960s. Sanderson described the actual shape of these regions as more like a lozenge rather than a triangle. Some of the more famous spots include an area in the Sea of Japan, the North Sea, and of course the infamous "Bermuda (or Devil's) Triangle."
Oceanographic surveyors of the sea floor in the area of the Bermuda Triangle and the North Sea region between continental Europe and Great Britain have discovered significant quantities of methane hydrates and older eruption sites.
Because of the correlations and existing data, the two envisioned what would happen when gigantic methane bubbles explode from natural fissures on the seafloor.
The methanenormally frozen at great pressure as gas hydrates embedded within subterranean rockcan become dislodged and transform into gaseous bubbles expanding geometrically as they explode upwards.

A similiar show (or maybe the same one) I saw where they injected a stream of bubbles under a boat and caused it to sink.
Methane hydrate will burn at room temp (fire ice) and will fizzle like an alka-seltzer if it’s disturbed by an earthquake and gets dislodged bringing it closer to the surface. It can cause enough bubbles to sink a boat. I assume as it rises through the atmosphere it could cause engine failure in an aircraft.
Are they going to rename it the “Bermuda Irregular Pentagon”?
‘Earth Farts’...or maybe we should call them ‘Sea Farts’.
> Not a new theory. Been hearing about this for several years.
> IMHO, probably true.
> It would explain sinking ships. Planes falling from the sky. Mysterious clouds. Pretty much all of it.
I’ve gotta agree with you. They’ve been talking about this for at least 20 years or more. Methane coming up in large quantities would create a local very fast lowering of the sea’s density as a foam and allow a ship to just sink. Large quantities of methane continuing up into the air would stall and airplane’s engine making it crash.
Well, there goes my theory: Lemurian cannibals traveling into the future, shooting down planes and eating them, leaving behind only napkins and salt packets, which one can easily see washed up on Florida beaches.
Didn’t Mythbusters do this?
There is probably some oil leaking out along with the methane gas....
Yes children, Santa and the Easter Bunny are real, now go play and stop bothering the adults.
The Bermuda Lozenge isn't something people write books about......thus the name was changed to "Triangle"
Mine was the explanation of those five TBMs "disappearing" all at once. He printed the entire transcript, which showed that the leader was disoriented and they just wandered around until their fuel ran out and then all went in together.
A classic was a Miami newspaper blaring "Bermuda Triangle Claims More Victims". A pleasure boat was found drifting off the Bahamas with no one on board and nothing in disarray. After an intensive search, the missing people were found. It seems they beached the boat, partied until they passed out, and the boat, which wasn't secured, drifted out with the tide. That part was buried far from the front page.
Kusche pointed out that many writers never went to the source materials but just copied/embellished what the other guy wrote. Berlitz, IMO, didn't even go that far, he just made stuff up.
Next project for the Mythbusters. They’re already ordering the beans.
Right now the largest known methane spot is located in Washington, DC...
A multi-million dollar industry created truly out of thin air. The Bermuda Triangle industry could be a good proof on how wealth can be created out of nothing more than an idea in opposition to the lib docrine of zero-sum.
This is not a new theory and has been proposed as the mechanism for 20 or more years.
Solved? No, this is merely another hypothesis.
Have any observations ever verified this hypothesis? Not that I’ve ever heard. Until an “experiment” happens that indicates this hypothesis works, there is no “solution.” They say the evidence is laid out but they don’t give any of the evidence. Have planes reported loss of lift before disappearing? Have ships reported giant bubbles?
Terrible headline not supported by the article. Poor reporting and/or severe journalistic misunderstanding of how science works. Just because you come up with a plausible hypothesis doesn’t mean it is correct.
When Lake Nyos in Africa turned-over back in 1986, they say the lake turned red due to iron rich sediments in the bottom. (The lake released a huge amount of CO2 that killed thousands of people and livestock.) Perhaps there would also be some iron rich sediment that would be released with a methane bubble, that could mess with your compass.
We are working on this problem of mining Methane Hydrates with Japan. The Maconda well blow out may have given us some answers as the main problem with MH is the very high pressures involved.
We have about a quarter of the world’s supply on our continental shelf. The supply that we have is vast. Hundreds or thousand of years worth of energy.
We just need to figure out how to get it to shore.
I saw a program with this theory in the early nineties.
