(CNSNews.com) - Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said that Jesuss Golden Rule inspired him to vote to confirm Elena Kagan to the U.S. Supreme Court and suggested it would be a good thing for his Senate colleagues to also ponder Jesuss words as they prepared to vote on Kagan.
It is divine in its orientation, and it is probably something that would serve us all well if we thought about it at moments such as this, Sen. Graham said on the Senate floor, as he pointed his colleagues to the Golden Rule and counseled them to look to the wisdom of somebody far wiser than I am as they cast their votes on Kagan.
As an associate counsel in the Clinton White House, Kagan was an architect of the legal and political strategy that President Bill Clinton used in vetoing the ban on partial-birth abortion. Her nomination by President Barack Obama in May was instantly endorsed by Planned Parenthood, one of the nations leading advocates of legalized abortion.
In casting his vote for Kagan, Sen. Graham said he expected her to follow a voting pattern similar to Justice John Paul Stevens whom she will replace. In his more than three decades on the court, Justice Stevens persistently backed the position that there is a constitutional right to abortion.
But at the end of the day, those of us in the Senate have to understand that every branch of government includes human beings and there is a rule that stood the test of time, said Sen. Graham in an August 3 Senate floor speech. I didn't make this one up. It was somebody far wiser than I am, somebody far more gifted than I ever hope to be, somebody I put a lot of trust in.
It is called the Golden Rule, said Graham. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. That is probably one of the most powerful statements ever made. It is divine in its orientation, and it is probably something that would serve us all well if we thought about it at moments such as this. "
Graham also said Kagan meets the test the Framers envisioned for a Supreme Court Justice.
I am going to vote for Elena Kagan because I believe constitutionally she meets the test the Framers envisioned for someone to serve on the Court, said Graham. I don't think the Framers ever envisioned Lindsey Graham from South Carolina voting no because President Obama picked someone who is clearly different than I would have chosen.
Sen. Graham was one of only five Republicans to vote to confirm Kagan to the Supreme Court. The other four were Senators Susan Collins of Maine, Judd Gregg of New Hampshire, Richard Lugar of Indiana, and Olympia Snowe of Maine. The Senate confirmed Kagan, 63-37, on Thursday, Aug. 5. Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska was the only Democrat who voted against the confirmation of Kagan.
The Golden Rule is found in the Gospels of Mark and Luke. In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus says during the Sermon on the Mount: Do to others as you would have them do to you.
Do unto others BEFORE they do unto you.
I’m sure Jesus will be delighted to know that he inspired this moron to vote for someone who believes that it is ok to kill innocent babies in a most horrific way by punching a hole in there head and sucking out their brains.
If Graham is using Jesus in this way, isn’t that blasphemy.
He who has the gold rules.
Remind me to not stand next to him. God might not be so discerning when he lets those lightning bolts fly.
Do to others as you would have them do to you.
(unto others,,unto you)
Could someone please publish the pictures.
Like his mentor, McCain, Graham contorts the issue in such a way as it becomes unrecognizable.
Could Sen. Graham be seriously ill? Perhaps a brain tumor is impinging on the centers of rationality in his brain. Or maybe he is just delusional.
It would help if the big mouths in the Conservative media, would actually hammer home what a dunce Graham is, so that maybe he actually won’t get elected. I would imagine that if Rush and Hannity spoke 1/2 as unkindly and as often about Graham and McCain as they do Obama, Reid, Pelosi, enough people in AZ and SC would catch on, and Graham and McCain would be toast.
Unfortunately, Hannity gives McCain interviews, and Rush refuses to endorse anyone over McCain, so while these 2 radio guys continue to make millions complaining about how bad liberals are, they do very little to put the kind of pressure on the RINOs and Republican leadership that is needed in order for anything to change.
"Everything they do is for show. On their arms they wear extra wide prayer boxes with Scripture verses inside, and they wear robes with extra long tassels. And they love to sit at the head table at banquets and in the seats of honor in the synagogues. They love to receive respectful greetings as they walk in the marketplaces, and to be called Rabbi.
"Dont let anyone call you Rabbi, for you have only one teacher, and all of you are equal as brothers and sisters. And dont address anyone here on earth as Father, for only God in heaven is your spiritual Father. And dont let anyone call you Teacher, for you have only one teacher, the Messiah. The greatest among you must be a servant. But those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."
The Gospel according to Saint Matthew, 10:1-12
Don’t know if he is telling the truth or not, he’s an elected official, but when it comes to getting re-elected NOTHING else matters, NOTHING.
He is from South Carolina. In SC, we traditionally have one conservative senator and one Kennnedy style liberal (i.e. Hollings and Thurmond). That way, they can cancel out their vote and leave us with no representation in the Senate.
Senator Goober is a Lieberal in RINO’s clothing!
It is the same misuse of the teachings/example of Jesus Christ that Bill Clinton attempted when he cited the adulteress, how Christ forgave her the sin when Billy Jeff got caught in public scandal, leaving out the most important part of the entire lesson. They all do this, they always leave out the last five words of the passage: "Go, AND SIN NO MORE."
People who do this pick and choose which part of His words fit to absolve or justify -- no matter how many foolish people they manage to con, unfortunately for them they cannot do so to the One for whom any of this really matters.
The jokes just write themselves with this guy.
I guess that fool has forgotten Robert Bork and all of W’s judicial appointees who were hung out to dry by Kennedy, Leahy, and the other hard-line Democrats. Graham is a smarmy fool who should be bounced from the Senate when his term is up.
I’m sure Lindsey, Jesus was talking about murderers. You idiot.
Does he REALLY think Jesus would vote for EVIL just because he wanted to be nice?
WTF??? Um, whoa...Golden Rule. I am speechless.
