Hundreds of IVF embryos donated 'without consent'

Hundreds of British couples could have children that are biologically theirs living with other parents around Europe or across the world without knowing, it has emerged.

A Spanish clinic runs an 'embryo adoption scheme' where spare embryos are donated to other women if the couple who created them do not know what they want to do with them or do not respond to correspondence from the clinic.

Furthermore, anonymity rules in Spain means the resulting children cannot trace their biological parents or vice versa.

[...]

The spokesman for the clinic said a total of more than 460 babies have been born across the world as a result of the international adoption scheme.

The clinic tries to assign the embryo to a couple who do not live in the same country or region as the biological parents in order to minimise the chance of two siblings meeting.

[...]

"Our desire is to offer these embryos the chance of becoming babies, helping them finding a mother."

Couples or single women can adopt the embryos. The embryo is matched to a woman of the same race and they are implanted in the womb and carried as normal. Because the women give birth to the babies there is no official paperwork for adoption and the baby is legally theirs.

[...]

[Victoria Macdonald:] "The clinic talk (sic) to you about embryo adoption but we did not realise that this is what would happen if you do not respond to the letter.

"I personally would have been very unhappy simply because I would want to know if Gabriella had a little brother or sister running around ."

??? This is a children's book! I guess it needs to be updated. Instead of the little baby bird, it's now an embryo asking, "Are you my mother?"

It would seem to me that life is better and pretty much trumps anything else.

Beats being murdered by being thawed out and washed down the drain.

With the genetic testing available, if two people both get tested, and are closely related, they will find each other.

For good or bad, it’s the way it is now.

When little babies-in-formation are called “spare embryos” we are in deeper doodoo than I ever thought.

There are “spare tires” - but no “spare embryos”.
We are in deep doodoo.

Playing God was never a good idea.

Women who accept these embryos for implantation should be held responsible to tell the children of their origin and advise their future spouses to be genetically tested.

That would not be necessary in same sex marriages of course.

Isn't warming them up and washing them down the drain basically murder?

The Church, rightly, opposes IVF. This sort of situation is one of the practical reasons for such opposition.

“This sort of situation is one of the practical reasons for such opposition”.

Another theory that I have heard floating around is that the embryos (babies if you don’t mind) are being sold/donated for stem cell research.

It should be, but then they’d have to acknowledge that they are human beings; it is also making someone a parent without their knowledge or consent.
