A 26-year-old Streeterville man was allegedly plotting to travel to Somalia where he could be trained by a terror group to commit a suicide attack against “infidels.”
Shaker Masri, who authorities say held views that grew increasingly violent, is being held without bond after the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force arrested him Tuesday. Masri appeared in federal court Wednesday.
The arrest happened after an 18-month investigation and just hours before he was to get on his flight, according to charges brought by federal prosecutors.
“I wish to know how the explosive belt was made,” Masri allegedly said to a friend who was wearing a wire. “I will wear one and I will not take it off.”
In a recorded call with a woman whom Masri loved in London, he appears to try to explain -- according to the FBI’s interpretation of the call -- why he’s choosing martyrdom through Jihad.
“Life is not worth living for me. I cannot enjoy life ... I have not enjoyed life since I was a child,” Masri says in a recorded phone call, according to charges. “I lost that innocence. I need to regain it back ...
This is something beyond your control or my control.”
According to charges, Masri told a cooperating individual that he decided to travel to Somalia to aid al-Qaeda or the group al-Shabaab in jihadist conflict. The cooperator and Masri met through a book warehouse in Addison in 2008 and developed a relationship, according to charging papers.
Masri continued to confide in the individual, who relayed information to authorities, including by wearing a wire, the criminal complaint says.
In a recorded call on June 8, Masri was captured on tape describing suicide bombers as “martyrs” for Islam.
Masri was charged in a criminal complaint with one count of attempting to provide material support to a designated terrorist organization and attempting to provide material support through the use of a weapon of mass destruction.
In court Wednesday, Masri’s attorney did not contest detention. However, the defense has asked for a preliminary hearing, in which the government is asked to show some of its evidence to a judge who determines whether there is enough probable cause for the case to move forward.

If this now becomes a lost vote for Obama in the future, you can be sure that the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force will cease and desist from all activity like this so the great one is not hindered in his world ruler quest.
