Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele is once again puzzling journalists and fellow party members. What happened this time? An RNC intern sent emails to the offices of foreign diplomats offering them a private meeting with Steele in advance of the November congressional elections. For what possible purpose, everyone is wondering, would Steele reach out to foreign ambassadors? Here's the email and, below, what observers are saying, with a fair share of the mockery that usually comes with Steele coverage.
"As you know, the November election is just 103 days away and the chairman would like to extend to you an invitation to sit down either at the RNC or at your embassy to discuss the upcoming 2010 midterm elections. With literally hundreds of congressional seats up for grabs in just under four months, Chairman Steel [sic] would love to have the opportunity to discuss the party's outlook with you."
Why This Is So Strange The Washington Monthly's Steve Benen explains, "Since it's illegal for foreign nationals to contribute to American candidates or political parties, and it's largely unheard of for international diplomats to offer candidate endorsements, the whole thing is a bit of mystery."

This sounds like someone set him up....he’s got a mole.....
How do we know this isn’t some Democrat mole intern doing this crap on his own and sending the e-mails to the press. Don’t jump the gun on this one.
Could this be construed as a violation of the Smith or Logan Acts? (Yeah, I know ‘Rats do it all the time.)
Didn’t the One get illegal donations from hundreds of muslims and other foreigners....Possibly the Iman that is building the NYC temple at ground zero???? That mosque could be the reason they bought the presidency for the muslim.
The One should have been put in jail for the illegal contributions that he accepted, instead of made POTUS.
Alas, our judges care less about the meaning of the Constitution and our laws since they are in the middle of deconstructing the USA anyway. Look at how sympathetic Kagan is to Sharia law.....That muslim money is now putting their plants in the SCOTUS!!!! That money was spent well.
And... who, pray tell, hired the friggin mole? Its coming from inside!
Hell Carter went to the soviets and asked for help on his campaign.
Working the foreign geeks and press is OK in my book...It’s simply a PR game and Steele is doing his job.

Seems weird to me. But then, I’m just a nobody over here in Southeast Texas.
Because he is a grossly incompetent fool who is only in the job to serve himself, maybe?
I think he is, and has been doing personal resume padding while on the clock (and expense account) of his current job.
Maybe the intern doesn’t know that foreign diplomats are from another country that the United States does not control. Public education...
Stipulated, but I still want to know if this is illegal.
Why anyone still insists on remaining with the OP(formerly the GOP) defies logic.
It’s not just that Steele is an absolute catastrophe as RNC head - it’s the sheer cynicism and stupidity of voting this clown to the RNC chairmanship. Steele can’t be seen as anything other than a clumsy, pathetic token response to the election of the first black president, and he’s cost the GOP in embarrassment and credibility.
If there is any possible way, Republicans will try to steal defeat from the jaws of victory. If the voters think that Repubs are trying to set themselves up as rulers again, we will not have the victory we expect.
Steele needs to understand that the voter revolution is about returning to the Constitution and cutting spending. The last time I checked, setting foreign policy is in the executive branch duties and we won’t have that branch until 2013.
If Steele isn’t spending 24/7 helping candidates get elected, then he should go now and be replaced by someone who will.
I think the mole is Steele.
Republican excesses are, to a large extent, responsible for the poor Executive Branch government we have today.
The RNC has called my house twice in the past couple of weeks - once for me and once for my wife. Each time the operator starts their song and dance with “Chairman Steele...” and each time we cut them off with “call me back when ‘Chairman Steele’ is no longer the Chairman”. CLICK.
