Katie Couric, whose real name is Katherine Anne Couric, mocked the names of Sarah Palins children during a rehearsal in her studio. Her comments, made during the 2008 presidential campaign, are being discussed in the blogosphere today after being leaked.
Where the hell do they get these names from? she asked, referring to Palin children Trig and Track, sending her crew into peals of laughter.
I have some new names for CBS. In a tragedy in Louisiana this Monday, six young teenagers drowned.
Their names were: Takeitha, JaMarcus, JaTavious, Litrelle, LaDairus and Latevin.
These, like the names of Palins children, are American names.
Times have changed since Jews newly arrived from Europe named their boys either Marty or Bernie and black people in the South named their kids either Bessy or Washington. You dont really want to go into things like where the hell a name like Katherine got a K on the front of it instead of a C, as it was spelled in the tradition. The neurosis could drag all the way back to Prague, say, in the 1600s.
The singular feature of America that persists west of 57th Street, where Katie and CBS live in paralysis, acting out an early-60s fantasy equal to that of Mad Men, is that we Americans are born free and find and take that freedom in every generation.
In terms anthropologists like Mircea Eliade and Sir James George Fraser would use, you could say we chop down the fathers tree in every generation; an archetypal reenactment of George Washington chopping down the cherry tree to free us from our pasts European, personal and otherwise and their anchors to the prisons of orthodoxy and tradition.
In this regard we plant our own tree and we take our own names. It is sacred and symbolic. And in this sacred act we name our kids any damn thing we please.
Take your Catholic-bashing somewhere else.
I was raised Episcopalian and converted to the Catholic faith. I’m also a strong supporter of Gov. Palin.
Jackasses who bash Gov. Palin do so because they are jackasses, not because of their church affiliation. I can verify that every denomination has more than its share of jackasses, as do atheists and agnostics.

If Piper Palin picked a peck of pickled peppers, how many pickled peppers did Piper Palin pick?
I do know that some of her Couric ancestors owned a large Greek Revival home in Eufaula Alabama in antebellum times, so there is the possibility that they were slave owners.
;-/
You're absolutely right! I've been spelling that wrong for years, apparently...
I think Barfsack Ocrumbo is a much nicer name. That’s why I call him that, with much respect and admiration.
There is a St. Katherine, not to be confused with St. Cahterine of Siena.
'Perky' Katie Couric is part and parcel of the liberal media 'elite' that surreptitiously despise the American middle class. Because Sarah Palin is undeniably a representative of the American middle class, they loathe her just as they clandestinely loath most 'average' Americans....you know, the people that do the work and pay the bills enabling third-rate TV 'celebrities' like 'Perky' Katie Couric to be paid 15 million dollars a year for the towering achievement of being able to read a teleprompter and make 'serious' faces at a TV camera, on cue.
However, if 'elites' such as 'Perky' Katie Couric can persuade the 'rabble' (in their view, that would be most of us) to elect socialist politicians, like Barack Hussein Obama, they'll consider their mission in life as accomplished because they hope to help move America into a second-rate nation status with a population cowed and dependent on 'government' and the people that control it. Guess who they assume those people will be.
Annoying as Katie Couric's mocking of Sarah Palin's children's names may be, it is just a mere hint of the kind of sordid attacks that will continue to be made by the media and political 'elites' against Sarah Palin, the antithesis of the failed TV 'star', 'Perky' Katie Couric. However, I believe that Paqlin and the kind of values she represents will ultimately prevail. Even now, the left is running scared of Palin and the Tea Party because of the very real threat both pose to the house of cards the political left has erected. The end is coming for the left's domination of politics and the popular culture. Sarah Palin ids a socout and the left is desperatly trying to divert our attention from her message with the tried-and-true ploys of mockery and flat-out lies. It isn't working, anymore. The leftists sense that, and are frightened. Even 'trolls' posting on conservative message boards bashing Sarah Palin and anyone that supports her can't alter the inevitable demise of liberalism as a moving force in America. The sooner the better.
For the record, Katie Couric's girls are named Elinor (19) and Caroline (14).
Anything ‘admirable’ is a bad word to leftist.
Is it true that doctors discovered a polyp that turned out to be Katie Couric’s brain during her colonoscopy?
I think everyone here is missing a very important part of what Katie Couric said. Her comments about the names of Palin’s children came at a time when she was reporting a very tragic story about the deaths of 6 young people. This wasn’t a time to comment in any manner, shape or form about the names of these 6 children or anyone else’s children.
Here's one of my favs:
“I do know that some of her Couric ancestors owned a large Greek Revival home in Eufaula Alabama in antebellum times, so there is the possibility that they were slave owners.”
Hmm. I think if the NAACP/Nation of Islam is looking for a wealthy white candidate to pay reparations for slavery, they may have found a winner!
Just off the top I’D SAY SOMEONE WHO POSTS CRAP LIKE YOU DO IS A SICK PUP
I’m just saying ...........
what kinda name is NAPS ;-)
Willow is the next town up the Parks Highway from Wasilla.
I’m bookmarking this exchange... pretty hilarious.
And I will pray thay you’ll understand that I’m entitled to my opinion. It’s annoying when someone who hasn’t even read the article hijacks the thread spouting silly, prejudiced pap. My comment is not profane. it doesn’t break any rules. As I said, I am entitled to my opinion and am allowed to state it.
Shocking! I didn't know that Obama would have a precedent for restricting the use of names!
“1)Track was named because Sarah and Todd met when he was running track in HS, and she is a runner too.”
I read somewhere where her Dad, upon hearing the name Track thought it was goofy too at the time. And Palin explained another part of the reason was he was born during track season. Her Dad said something like “Jeez - what if it was basketball season?”. Without missing a beat, Palin said “It would have been ‘Hoops’”.
And of course they had thought about Van. As in Van Palin (Van Halin).
**I wonder when Katie will poke fun at these children’s names?**
