Texas in need of more minority teachers (Segregation is back!)
Dallas Morning News ^ | 8/3/10 | AP

Texas schools need to hire more black and Hispanic teachers, especially as the enrollment of minority students continues to rise, experts said.

The Dallas Morning News reported Tuesday that two out of three Texas teachers in the past school year were white, which is a proportion that has not changed much in recent years. The state projects that minority students will make up around 62 percent of the student body in the 2011-12 school year, up more than 10 percent from a decade ago.

"The research shows that if you can match the ethnicity and race of teachers and students, teachers tend to be more effective," said Ed Fuller, associate director of the University Council for Educational Administration at the University of Texas at Austin. "It's important for role modeling and pushing those students to go to college. Of course, you want to make sure teachers are well-qualified and not just thrown into a classroom because of race or ethnicity."

A Harvard University Kennedy School of Government study published in 2004 concluded that white and black students in Tennessee did better on state tests with teachers of their own race.

The findings indicated that recruiting more minority teachers could generate important gains among minority students.

A similar study by the Education Resources Information Center found that Hispanic students had similar benefits. One of the reasons is that minority teachers better understand cultural differences and can "break down the students' stereotypes," according to the study.

Texas school districts hire about 30,000 to 35,000 new teachers every year, but the pool of minorities interested in the profession is small, local officials said.

This approach should finish the Texas public school system. Thousands of parents in the white community are sending their
children to private schools, or if they can’t afford that, they are homeschooling them.
There will be no stomach for property tax payers to finance this sinking ship.

Train them to be racists early and when they grow up, they won’t depart from it.

Teaching is more an art than a discipline. Forcing people to study education in college and then go into a thankless job as a public school educator is bad enough; forcing minorities who don’t care about education to study education in college and then go into a thankless job as a public school educator is criminal! We would be doing a disservice to the kids by forcing people who don’t want to teach into teaching through enticement (scholarships, “minority” grants). The kids deserve passionate (non-sexual) educators to inspire them. I was blessed to have passionate educators, and I learned a lot on my own through the public school system.

The Dallas News, AP, and Ed Fuller ( the UT egghead) are RACISTS!!! They are essentially saying that blacks and Hispanics are too stupid and too ethnically delicate to learn from white teachers.

Thousands of parents in Texas are homeschooling because we have robust co-operatives and you can have your kid developing working robotics projects in elementary school...

The whole ‘we need to pair students with teachers who look the same’ is the very definition of RACISM. These so-called ‘intellectuals’ are saying that black or hispanic students are incapable of learning unless taught by a black or hispanic teacher? So let me ask, what was the whole point of desegregating schools, if this is what’s required for minority students to succeed. These people are idiots. One of my absolute favorite teachers of all times when I was in school was Mrs. Jameson, a black woman. She didn’t preach, she taught, and she didn’t play favorites with anyone, and helped everyone, and we all (whites, blacks, hispanics) loved her.

Why stop at separate black and white classroom? Let’s take it a step further; how about separate black and white schools? Oh wait... that might be illegal...

How is it going to benefit students to stick them with teachers of their own race/ethnicity - don’t they need to learn to work with and respect other cultures/races? So now liberals just want to shelter them from whitey apparently - and screw whitey out of a job so they can hire more minorities. Afterall, it’s “For the Children!” doncha know???

And why won’t this apply to white kids as well (we all know it won’t).
I’ve gone through so much of this multicultural crap during my own education...all these people want to do is constantly talk about, and point out, how we are all different. How about focusing on how we are the same?

But what about "diversity"? If most of the students are black and Hispanic, shouldn't they bring in WHITE teachers in order to have "diversity"?

Imagine if a mostly white school had nonwhite teachers, and someone suggested that they should bring in white teachers to teach them; that somehow nonwhite teachers were inadequate to teach whites?

If they’re not the minority anymore, stop playing word games and just use the races you want. Directed at the media that writes this crap. I’m tired of seeing ‘white’ and ‘minorities’ as us vs them so often. Gets people killed, more than this week’s thing too. All the damn time.

What if the white teacher is multi-lingual, i.e. speaks English, Tex-Mex, and Ebonics?

I would argue that we should not allow teachers of any ethnicity teach classes to students who are primarily of their ethnicity.

Why? Simple... perhaps we can stop teachers from teaching such crap as ebonics, Black Liberation Theology, reconquista, etc.

It isn’t whiteys fault, the southwest doesn’t belong to Mexico, and clear, concise English helps you get ahead in the world. A basis in logic and critical thinking helps too....

(tongue firmly in cheek)

I guess you don’t understand the REAL definition of “diversity”:

Diversity means fewer white people and less Western Culture.

(well, maybe that’s NOT tongue in cheek, because that is the working definition)

My favorite teacher in High School was black. He taught government and loved every student regardless of race. In fact he tended to be hardest on black students who did not care about school and dressed in ethnic clothes he felt inappropriate.

That being said, color should not matter when it comes to teaching. Only if the teacher loves what they do and loves kids.

Thankless job? Public school teaching is the world’s highest paid, semi-skilled part-time job in the world. Most - not all - public school teachers in Texas and elsewhere today would have a hard time finding indoor work with no heavy lifting if it weren’t for the “schools”. Roughly 40-50% of new teachers leave within the first 5 years or so because they have discovered that government schools are not what they thought they were. The ones left behind are mainly - not all - those who can’t find work that pays as well. Consequently, the evolutionary factor in government school faculties for over 20 years has been “reverse Darwin” - the survival of the unfittest.

Government school employees aren’t noble; they aren’t saints; and, they are “over-thanked” (overpaid). Then we could discuss what they are actually doing to children spiritually, morally, and intellectually. Unfortunately, it would require a book to describe the pathologies of the government schools and the vermin who tend to infest them.
