Money behind the mosque
NY Post ^ | August 04, 2010 | Editorial

Yesterday's unanimous vote by the city Landmarks Preservation Com mission cleared the last municipal impediment to construction of a 13-story mosque and community center just blocks from Ground Zero.

But important questions linger.

The vote, which denied landmark protection for a building that must be demolished to make way for the mosque, was hailed by Mayor Bloomberg and others as an affirmation of religious liberty of a peculiarly American sort.

As, of course, it was.

Just imagine the city fathers of, say, Riyadh so graciously clearing the way for construction of a 13-story cathedral in the Saudi capital.

As if.

Indeed, such a notion renders risible criticism of the sort leveled by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, among others, before the vote.

CAIR had denounced opponents of the projects as "bigots and extremists."

That's pretty rich, coming from an organization that in 2007 was named an unindicted co-conspirator in connection with a plot to support the terrorists of Hamas -- and that has seen several of its former officials and staffers convicted on terror-related charges.

Fact is, the project has drawn opposition from a lot of level-headed folks -- most particularly families of 9/11 victims.

It’s going to be a fortress, a bunker, and an arsenal. As well as a recruiting center and listening post.

Some rich conservative needs to open up a honey-baked ham store across the street. Then someone else needs to open a training school for service dogs (including bomb-sniffing dogs) next door. Let the imam (who wants us to go to semi-Sharia law) deal with the real diversity in this country.

Any other ideas on what could be opened in the neighborhood?

Normally, Saudi Arabia foots the bill for mosque construction in the USA (at least for their sect of Islam). But it seems this is a whopper even as mosques go. How about we send invitations to, say, some churches, synagogues, and other non-Islamic religious bodies to put up more buildings in the area?

If this wasn’t a Bummer admin, I would expect the CIA to figure out how to bug the place while it was still in the permits stage. But I betcha Bummer is going to tell the CIA to sit on its hands and do nothing that would “offend” the Muslims.

In the Cold War era this would have described a Soviet embassy. The more things "change"...

How about renaming the street "Lepanto Blvd"? Clear away some buildings across the street to make into a park with captured GWOT war trophies? And a flagpole taller then the mosque to fly a gigantic American flag 24 hours a day.

This mosque will be nothing other than a monument to the "victory" of Sept.11, 2001. It will honor and celebrate the martyrdom of those who attacked the "great satan" in his own backyard.

If they list the names of those who died (as has been reported)it will only be as a detailed list of those who were killed by the heroic acts of brave Muslims.

It will not honor America, but will honor Islam.

Once upon a time when we had a Secretary of State the watchword was "Reciprocity".

If they want to build here, we must be able to build there!

Question to White House: When will you act like a real President of a Nation?

"It’s going to be a fortress, a bunker, and an arsenal. As well as a recruiting center and listening post."

It's going to be a smoking pile of rubble, wreckage and ashes.

..... a church, bible school, Christian Science reading room, BBQ restaurant, ballet studio, night club, pub, the possibilities are endless.

I also think that graffiti should be encouraged. Who knows what inspired tags might decorate the urban landscape.

I like the big US flag idea a lot as well.

“an affirmation of religious liberty” he says. This may make this liberal feel good, but it is wrong. This is not about a religion, but a world-domination movement cleverly disguised as a religion.
