Incumbent Sen. John McCain leads former Tucson city councilman Rodney Glassman in a new survey by conservative pollster Rasmussen Reports.
McCain gets the nod from 53 percent of those surveyed, while Glassman is the choice of 34 percent in a for-now hypothetical general election.
Glassman, who narrowly leads the race for the Democratic nomination, tops the strongest opponent McCain faces in his primary, former congressman J.D. Hayworth.
Hayworth is the choice of 38 percent, and Glassman 43 percent, in that matchup.
Independent voters prefer McCain over Glassman by a two-to-one margin, but they break nearly even if Hayworth is the Republican in the race.
A May poll saw Glassman trailing McCain 57-28 percent. Hayworth then had a slight lead over Glassman, 49-33 percent.

what is the deal with McCain...I know hayworth looks like he is heavily coated with pancake make up ..but how can he be that far behind?

Hope Glassman kicks McCain’s arse.
I would rather face an enemy than a back-stabbing-useful idiot like McCain.
Well, this should be irrelevant, because when JD wins, McCain has stated he will “get behind the winner” just as JD has said for McCain.
There was a thread here last week that said that Angle has revamped and tightened up her campaign, she may be on a better track now than that glitchy few weeks before.
Isn't that why Obama is president instead of junior senator?
I pray so.
McCain has the standing to challenge the eligibility of a Obama, whose birth to an alien father is patently in violation of Article II. Because McCain, sadly but truly, was not born on our soil or sovereign territory, he too is ineligible. He made a choice to run anyway and keep quiet about Obama. Clair McCaskill and Pat Leahy tried to help with Sen Bill 2678, The Children of Military Families Natural Born Citizen Act. McCain was their insurance that no one would ask about Obama. He served his country but dishonored his Constitution.
I don’t have any facts yet, but something stinks about McCain and Angel’s (sp) drop in the polls. Seriously: how can a majority of Arizonans support SB 1070, and at the same time be for McLame? And after what Reid’s done?
This smells just like the media reporting in the 2000 presidential election that Gore had won places like Florida well before the polls were due to close. It just seems like these polls are coming out to demoralize voters, to not show up to vote.
I’m not a conspiracy kind of guy, but I’m not buying these polls just yet...
Think I’ll drop a donation to both JD and Sharon.
Na, Obama is President because McCain and over half of the Republican press and officeholders told Americans that he was a “good man” who loved his country. McCain and staff refused to even campaign against him.
Not to mention the entire US media and global press who did not vet him or even report on him because he was an “historic” candidate.
>>> Apparently nobody in AZ watched the Debates
Or perhaps they did. Outside the echo chamber, the more people have seen Hayworth the less they like him. And the stronger McCain has grown.
>>> how can a majority of Arizonans support SB 1070, and at the same time be for McLame?
Gov. Brewer, who leads the sb-1070 fight, has endorsed McCain. Calling him McLame doesn’t seem to be a viable strategy countering that.
Well, Hayworth hasn’t yet even campained against Glassman. So I’d say this poll is premature.
He made the mistake of saying things opposite to his own record against an opponent with the money to make him pay.
Not that McCain hasn’t done the same, but I’ve heard that Hayworth is far outspent by McCain. And Palin supporting McCain certainly doesn’t help.
This is probably McCain’s last campaign, given his age. It is frightful to think of what liberal, lameduck McCain is going to do.

U.S. Sen. John McCain has spent an unprecedented $16 million to date fending off a challenge from former U.S. Congressman J.D. Hayworth. Hayworth, so far, has spent $1.5 million, according to campaign finance reports filed July 15. Hayworths spokesman, Mark Sanders, said the expenditure proves Hayworth is such a strong candidate that McCain pulled out all the stops with phone banking, mailers, radio and TV. I think that the senator was really fearful of losing this race and he decided to just dump as much as he could into it to buy it, he said. While candidates are allowed to

Well Gee Wiz...ok,
How about the idiots in Arizona expanding their mental powers and remembering their boy McCain joining forces with Teddy Kennedy and the rest of the Dems in pushing Comprehensive Immigration Reform (you know...Amnesty!).
I seriously wonder what the folks in Arizona, Nevada, and South Carolina have been drinking. It’s very difficult to not conclude that said voters are abject idiots.
Hayworth would have no trouble at all with the Dem if he can get by the treasonous McCain.
McCain should retire and not die in his seat the way Byrd did. lol..how do you get these old crooks to move on? I am not please with Palin supporting him...she is putting personal loyalty over her country after all her talk about doing what is right.
I agree. I hope JD runs third party if he does not win the primary. McCain is a cancer to the GOP and I see him doing more harm to the Conservative cause in the long term by winning.
There is no way a lib member of the Tucson City Council beats Hayworth in the current Az. climate. This is propaganda B.S. It’s “Reagan and Carter are tied on election day” style crap.
