Android Soars Past RIM And Apple In Q2: Now The U.S.'s Top-Selling Smartphone Platform
Business Insider ^ | 08/02/2010 | Dan Frommer

Posted on 08/02/2010 10:32:17 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

It's happening, Apple!

Google's free and open-source Android operating system shot past its competitors last quarter to become the top-selling U.S. smartphone OS, according to research firm Canalys.

Android accounted for 34% of the 14.7 million smartphones sold in the U.S. last quarter, while RIM was 32.1% of the market and Apple was 21.7%, Canalys estimates. That's a huge victory for Google, which was zero two years ago.

Yes, Apple's iPhone 4 didn't launch until the very end of the quarter, and Q3 should be bigger for Apple. But the fact that Google is anywhere near Apple's market share -- let alone halfway above it -- must concern both Apple and RIM.

What does it mean for Apple? It's time to start selling the iPhone at more U.S. carriers, and not just AT&T.

Apple must sell the iPhone at Verizon Wireless, the biggest U.S. carrier, as soon as possible, and potentially at T-Mobile, too. In the U.S. smartphone market, carriers still handle most of the distribution -- Google learned this the hard way when its would-be-disruptor Nexus One store flopped. And now only about a third of iPhone buyers are switching to AT&T from other carriers. So if Apple wants to take the top position in the market, it's going to have to sell the iPhone at more carriers.

I hardly think that that is the defining virtue of a smartphone.

It is a defining virtue of a TOUCH ("touch" as in you actually touch it) smartphone. The stylus was what I hated most about the Palms I've had (Palm Pilot, Palm V and Palm-based smart phone) and my old Pocket PC. If you think finger smudges are bad, stylus scratches are much worse as they build up over time.

Plus I had a habit of losing my styli. Haven't lost a finger yet.

There is one program that I have not been able to replace. I could click on a patient, click on a drug, point the IR emmitor at the printer and it would spit out legible scripts. I bet the local pharmacists cried when my Visor died.

Did you have to take the obligatory illegible handwriting course in med school, or did you just have a natural knack for it and get to test out of that one?

With all the medical pros using the iPhones, I'm surprised that app hasn't been written yet. However, for the dental office I manage the DentalMac software's iPhone and iPad module allows that, but it's not stand alone. It also requires a BlueTooth enabled printer or prints to the office's network printer. Also, I know that a friend uses something in his medical practice with his iPhone that handles scrips but I think that's electronic. I know

My second grade teacher took me aside and told me that I’d better plan on being a doctor because with my handwriting, I wasn’t capable of any other occupation. Seriously!

We still have the IR capable printers but I’m not familiar with any devices using IR anymore.

I have an Android phone and I found an app that lets me print to any printer visible to the network but I haven’t bothered looking for a script writing program as I have no good way of getting the patient list onto the phone without typing them in by hand.

The IS department just had another layoff, and they guy that used to get the gadgets going was one of the people that lost their job. It looks like I’ll be hand writing for the time being.

HTC TyTN. Eten M600. Qtek S100. Samsung i700 and E898. Motorola A1000. And there are many others, out since the 2002+ timeline.

Apple made a slick UI and simplified installation of apps. But as far as introducing a new concept or class of 'smartphones'? Not even close. Everything the iPhone could do at its release was already existing from several vendors for at least 18 months or more...

NONE of those are Modern or Touch. They are stylus and half are not even color!

Apple is TOUCH. True Touch. Fingers. Not buttons. Software, not hardware.

And while Apple did not INVENT any new tech, Apple did put this tech together into one package and one concept that EVERYONE IS NOW TRYING TO COPY.

And to pretend otherwise, is disproven by your very participation on this thread. If it weren't so, you wouldn't be here bothering to LIE about it. No one is bothering to discuss those archaic phones you posted above... because they do not matter made no difference and failed to do what iPhone is doing!

But I still haven't figured out why some random dude who writes sound software drivers cares soooo much to dis on Apple 24x7.

You said it PERFECTLY.

Touch means touch. Not a plastic little pencil.

I lost so many of those for my Sprint 6700, that I bought 2 dozen of them off Ebay. I put 3 in my glovebox, 1 or 2 in my pockets, 3 in my purse, 3 in my briefcase, 3 in my back pack, 3 in each of my different desks at home, work and school.

And I STILL LOST Them.

Once I was sitting in class and a cute guy asked if he could borrow my stylus, and I sold him one of my spares out of my pocket for $10 on the spot!

I hated. Hated, hated HATED those things.

I had the same problem with my Jornada, but at least it WAS a true touch screen. But it wasn’t a phone.

I carried BOTH for a while, as the browser and apps for the 6700 were AWFUL. And the screen was sooo tiny.

Sold BOTH as soon as the iPhone came out. I paid full retail for it too... I am one of those who got a coupon rebate back after they lowered the price. I bought an Apple TV. Hate it. Sold it. Use my Mac Mini instead.

LOL

You're a liar Rachel. You haven't a clue. You've never used those kinds of devices, you don't know what they can or cannot do with just your finger.

You use vaporous, ever-shifting terms to keep your ignorance hidden, but it doesn't work. Much like your classic "invulnerability" statement about iOS, only to find out that it can be rooted by just visiting a website.

You haven't a clue, and now you're lying (as usual) to cover your errors, rather than actually admitting you were wrong. Hurts your ego too much, I'm sure. That and it damages the Religion of Apple.

No one is bothering to discuss those archaic phones you posted above... because they do not matter made no difference and failed to do what iPhone is doing!

Oh, rational, thinking, logical people are discussing them. Rabid Macolytes are trying to deny they ever existed - or lie about their functionality - because it shows them to be the unquestioning followers of Apple that they are. That they bought the "Apple is the font of all that is Good and Right" story even though it's clearly a lie.

Just like you bought the "invulnerable" line. Like you claimed Apple leads smartphone sales (which it NEVER has). Just like you buy every line that Apple spews forth.

But I still haven't figured out why some random dude who writes sound software drivers cares soooo much to dis on Apple 24x7.

Because I work in the tech industry and make my living designing hardware and software for the consumer electronics giants. I'm not some empty-headed giggle-bucket that has a JD but thinks she's a technological giant when she really knows zilch...

Don’t forget, Rachel’s also claimed that iOS is invulnerable to attacks because it’s written different. And that every app in the app store is 100% screened and cannot contain malware. And that OSX does not have built in malware scanning. And many, many more provably false (and in most cases, simply dumb) positions all in her worship of the company from Cupertino.

She’s WAY out of her league, technically, not a clue about technology other than what’s pretty...

Hey shill, Curious that you still haven't pinged your precious Mac List to let them know about the huge gaping hole of security that exists on every iPhone since the beginning. Is that because it paints Apple in a bad light?

My second grade teacher took me aside and told me that I’d better plan on being a doctor because with my handwriting, I wasn’t capable of any other occupation. Seriously!

Ah! So it was an innate natural ability! You second grade teacher was an inspiration to you guiding you toward you best purpose where you could place your ability to use baffling pharmacists day in and day out!

My second grade teacher sent a note home saying "Swordmaker is a garden of disconnected but interesting information!" As I've gotten older, I've gotten much better at getting it connected... but even at that young age I was collecting valuable (to me) trivia.

I wish I could help you with getting your patient list into your phone. Some ideas. Your office software should be able to output an alphabetized list even if it's just a mailing list or labels. Print to a file. Import that to a contacts list in your Android phone. . . or maybe leave as is. Hire a coder to create a link between that and something like Skyscape's RXDrugs Dosing Companion (its a free App for the iPhone and should be available for Android) or another lite PDR drug reference, into a scrip editor App for your Android, with basic prescription terminology and links to the BlueTooth APIs for printing your prescriptions. Make it for both Android and iPhone and kill three birds with one App counting the iPad. Who knows, you might get rich!

Here we F'N go again...

You're a liar Rachel. You haven't a clue. You've never used those kinds of devices, you don't know what they can or cannot do with just your finger.

Pug. You are a PATHETIC LIAR. Not only that, you can't read and don't think anyone else can read.

Actually, I don't believe all that I just posted. I think you can read, do know what you posted and just enjoy making us jump. This is a sick twisted little game for you.

You like to LIE and DISTORT knowing that those who love the truth will jump like little pets to defend truth. That is the sick game you play.

Not only have I owned some of these devices and others like them, I STILL HAVE some of them.

Also, I can read and google tells me about any of them I need to know.

So, your lies and game playing will be exposed AGAIN. Just in case someone new is reading this and doesn't have the time to do the work to see which of us is a sick twisted liar and which of us defends liberty, truth and justice.

Here we go again.

You listed several phones. I will list the proofs one at a time. Take that!

Actually, I know you don't really care, you know I am right, you are just like Chrissy Mathews getting a tingle down your leg watching me do all this work to prove you wrong, when you know you ARE LYING for the sport of it.

HTC TyTN

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_TyTN

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bB2fsuEMBOY

That is the video where it is compared to the 6700, the phone I had and used for two years before the iPhone came out. I know exactly what it does and doesn't do.

Wiki's last line makes it perfectly clear. AVOID IT! THE SCREEN SUFFERS FROM ALIGNMNET PROBLEMS. So did my 6700 and so did MOST of these STYLUS driven phones with little icons so small a 4 years finger couldn't click them if they could be clicked.

Eten M600

So old and crappy it doesn't even have a wiki page. But here is a video for it. STYLUS and old Palm layout style? Get real. Not even as modern as the 6700 above.

Did you see that little screen keyboard that popped up? TRY typing on THAT with your fingers. LMAO.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmNuqd1Ip2g

NEXT !!

QTEK S100, a re-badged HTC Magician Pocket PC Phone.

Same 6700 design. Boring. You LIE AGAIN. Not only have I owned this design type of phone, I am so familiar with it I have friends who could tell the stories of the times I cursed it and they laughed because I spent so much on it!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_Magician

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xrulb_mon-ancien-pdaphone-qtek-s100_tech

OK, you lying sob, here is #4!

Samsung i700. Like the M600, it lacks the sliding keyboard and is stylus driven. Very ancient, PDA styled phone. Also the only videos you can find tell you how to replace the screen. According to many forum posts, this thing had horrid screen failure issues. JUNK.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsung_SPH-i700

http://video.yahoo.com/watch/332571/2155703

Did you even look any of these up? I recall the last time you posted some inane list like this and got me to do all the work, it turned out NONE of your links were accurate at all and some even denied the things you claimed they said.

I guess since you really do not care and just post lies to entertain yourself, it doesn't matter, but I'd think, if it were me, I'd at least TRY and find one or two to be right about... but then I am not SICK, TWISTED and don't get jollies off of making people do stupid people tricks either, so what do I know about how to be an ass clown.

Ready for #5?

Wow... you saved the worst for last? That just is terrible planning.

The A1000 was released in Q4 2004, but was available only on contract through 3 Network, in just a few countries (mostly Australia, Austria, Denmark, Italy, Singapore[SingTel], Sweden and the UK). Although it was presented in two colour schemes, the 3 network offered it only in the dull matte dark-grey / light gray combination. Also, the phone firmware was locked and branded for 3 Network and presented various limitations, like the impossibility of changing internet connectivity accounts.

Anyone get all that?

Only in a few countries? Yeah. Typical Palm look too. I mean, at least the 6700 design TRIED to be useful. These idiots didn't even know there was a box, let alone, how to think outside it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KC7nGuM5v4

So there we have it.

Another fun game with the most incredulous liar and fraud on the internet. All five of PUGs so called Modern Touchscreen Phones are NOTHING OF THE SORT.

His secondary claim that I am an ignorant little girl who never used these types of phones isn't worth laughing at.

So, if you are reading this for the first time, understand, Pug isn't serious. He knows what the iPhone is and does, he just gets his entertainment from LYING and then watching those of us who love the truth jump through all these hoops looking up his archaic posts and refferences to refute him.

He knows he's lying. He knows the things he posts are false. He know we won't let them stand, so he posts them anyway and gets to laugh as we run around all flustered.

It is a very sick game from a very sick mind. But, you, those of you maybe just running across this post and not knowing who is saying what or why, YOU need to know the truth, so that is why many of us play his sick little game.

No price is too high of a price for truth to prevail.

Here is an article on the use of IR with the iPhone and iTouch. It’s not exactly good news. IR is very old tech and getting older by the hour. Bluetooth is the future and perhaps there is an alternative in BT for you.

Meanwhile, check this out. It is very detailed and you MAY find a product which would offer a working solution for you.

Liar. Nothing you posted countered what I put up. On the other hand, you’ve been PROVEN to be a liar here, and many times before (invulnerable iOS ring a bell, little girl)?

You’re a GD EVIL LIAR of the worst order, you despicable, trollish, and an Apple shill of the worst kind. Your ignorance - plainly on display every time you type - about anything technical is astonishing and you continue to LIE even when shown otherwise, because your fragile little ego cannot handle that you are a dim bulb, slack-jawed idolator of Apple.

LIAR.

Hey, read the thread - they jumped ALL OVER ME for stating a fact, and they continue to lie and twist my position, making stuff up and claiming I stated what I didn’t state. I get called every filthy name you can imagine because I post a truth (such as the security hole in the iPhone that roots the device by visiting a website).

I actually bring content here other than Apple fandom; ask Swordmaker what the last non-Apple thread he posted on was.

You want me to bow out? OK, fine... But if they start attacking me again - unwarranted, without provocation - then you need to seriously consider who you think is in the wrong here. I’ll keep it on the up and up, but how many times do I need to be attacked without reason, without cause?

If I were to pursue this venture, I would most likely forgo IR and BT. We are already running admissions through wifi and we have a networked laser printer.

Medical software is very fragmented. There are about a dozen systems in common use, but institutions may be running the latest version or could be using a version 20 years old. Where I sit, there are 4 different software packages that I use. All of them access the patient list but don't necessarily speak to each other. I have a 5th system in my office for transcription, it is 8 years old, no longer vendor supported and runs from a single server than cannot be replaced when it crashes someday.

Basically IS is just a wing and a prayer. Somethings I think I should just invest in about a dozen rubber stamps. It would cover about 90% of the scripts I write and I wouldn't have to call IS when they stopped working.

If you are into irony, we started paperless medical records. We still fill out and print all of the same forms and then pay somebody to scan them and somebody else to destroy them. To view them, we use old pentium class computers to view the image files. There is no search function, no way to consolidate information, no way to tell what a page holds other than to load it and view it. The system is so slow that when we need old records we print them then dispose of them when we are finished. The hospital cannot figure out why we are spending so much money on paper and printer supplies.

I live in the world of bureaucratic planning and unintended consequences. If I could talk them into electronic perscriptions, I genuinely fear what they would come up with, and I would have to live with it because I asked for it.
