Those who want slavery should have the grace to name it by its proper name. They must face the full meaning of that which they are advocating or condoning; the full, exact, specific meaning of collectivism, of its logical implications, of the principles upon which it is based, and of the ultimate consequences to which these principles will lead. - Ayn Rand, Anthem
As of last week, Charles Rangel, D-New York, has introduced a bill, H.R. 5741, the Universal National Service Act, into Congress - and the provisions and implications of this bill are drastic and far-reaching indeed:
To require all persons in the United States between the ages of 18 and 42 to perform national service, either as a member of the uniformed services or in civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, to authorize the induction of persons in the uniformed services during wartime to meet end-strength requirements of the uniformed services, and for other purposes.
Normally, when discussing news, I quote the relevant news story along with publication source and date as a means of documenting the events occurrence. In this case, however, I am unable to do so, because there arent any.
Thats right: a Google search as of this writing on Googles News section for H.R. 5741 yields zero news results. Nada. The null set. So, if you were thinking that its the task of our news media to provide critical information to us mere citizens - and that theyre performing this task - youd better think again.
The full text of H.R. 5741 quoted above, however, can be found on the Library of Congress Web site, (http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c111:H.R.5741:) - and this bill represents nothing less than the re-introduction of slavery into the United States of America.

So how is this one different from all the other Draft bills Rangel has submitted every year since 2003 or so?
This strikes me as just another of Rangel’s draft stunts. It is a non-story ... an anti-war publicity stunt.
It’ll never pass.

The argument could be made that a Federal Directive to purchase Health Insurance violates the Amendment.
Yup. My point exactly.
Rangel’s always bleating this one. But we shouldn’t be too surprised that a politician who thinks the government owns all the money also thinks it owns all the labor.
...it’ll pass. :(:(:(
Liberals love slavery. Their only real objection to the pre-1865 chattel slavery in America is that the slaves were privately owned.
Since it has been mentioned in several postings, posters need to know that the 13th Amendment “involuntary servitude” argument vis-a-vis national service(”the Draft”) has previously been raised in the courts and decided in the government’s favor.
Here is a link to the Selective Service System website where the case information can be found (scroll about halfway down the page):

The website also has a lot of useful information and statistics on the Selective Service.
Slavery is inevitable under any form of socialism because without the rewards of a capitalist economy there is no reason for people to work - food, shelter, medical care (all of low quality to be sure) are available for little or no charge. Therefore, to get anything done, the authorities must draft the labor force. This can be done by way of a “national service.” Those who refuse to do their required “national service” are sent to work camps.
DOUBLEPLUSGOOD, heh?
13th Amendment
Amendment XIII
Section 1.
Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
Section 2.
Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

Ayn Rand’s fantasy world is a great way to escape, but when you’re back to earth and dealing with reality, one can appreciate the US Conscript Army that has done so well from the Civil War through Vietnam. Rangel has twisted this to somehow require everybody to serve either in a military or nonmilitary capacity. This is a blueprint to waste time and money. There is a case to be made that our partially conscripted force was a good alternative to the current recruited force. ‘Universal Service’ is quite a different thing though and ought to be avoided.
Interesting quote from Jim Nicholson in that link. It’s a pity so few GOP members were man enough to serve at all, never mind with his degree of distinction. It really is a black mark on the party, in my opinion.
Charlie ‘Happy Birthday at the Plaza, 13 ethics violations’ Rangel gets to propose essentially a national slavery act? Adults 18-42? The age group who typically goes to college and bears and raises the next generation of children? How does mandatory service fit in with that? Will the generation that rallied against the draft and protested the Viet Nam war be sure to vote this one in for us? And, gee, I guess the bill outlines who decides what the service is and how or if a person successfully fulfills it. Wow.

Considering BO’s election has brought about a whole new movement called the ‘TEA PARTY’, how's that working out for ya, MO?
