Where all the oil went
NY Post ^ | August 02, 2010 | Editorial

The New York Times devoted a big chunk of its front page one day last week to noting that much of the spilled BP Deepwater Horizon oil has "dissipated."

Most of it, in fact.

And to scant noticeable ill-effect -- at least so far -- relative to the apocalyptic rhetoric attending weeks of televised video footage that showed oil rushing from the ocean floor.

It's not clear how much oil actually spilled; Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute expert Dr. Judy McDowell estimates that between 96 million and 184 million gallons made its way into the Gulf before the leak was capped two weeks ago.

That's a lot, right?

Well, maybe not.

Even at the high range, the leakage represents less than 20 percent of the capacity of the Central Park Reservoir -- some 1 billion gallons.

And the Gulf of Mexico is considerably larger than the reservoir: It holds some 643 quadrillion gallons of water, according to the federal Environmental Protection Agency -- or 4.43 billion gallons of water for each gallon of escaped oil.

"The oil spill is definitely blown out of proportion," said McDowell last week, with a laugh, a day after returning to Woods Hole from the Gulf Coast.

I believe Rush Limbaugh likened it to less than a drop of oil in a bathtub filled with water.

IF the extent of the oil spill was overblown it was by the MSM, and was at the behest of the radical Leftist Obama circus in charge, and for a purpose. The purpose being the shutdown of all offshore oil drilling.

An apparently successful behest as many offshore rigs have, or are moving away, and the industry in the Gulf of Mexico is radically changed for the worst. It will take a lot to restart everything I understand even today when there has been less change thus far than later on when ALL the rigs have moved to foreign drilling charters.

Obama needs to be in a cage along with all the D A’s that voted for the bastard.

It is the intent of the radical Left to destroy this Nation, and the economy (Stupid) is their lead target. Without energy we are dead in the water.

While the spill was going on, it was to everybody’s advantage to pretend that the spill was very serious:

The Administration used the seriousness of the spill to beat up on BP and to attempt to sieze more power through the moratorium and Cap & Tax.

The Republicans used the seriousness of the spill to beat up on the Obama administration and make them look like incompetent, power-grubbing fools.

The Bunny-Huggers used the seriousness of the spill to smear their enemies in Big Oil.

Louisiana used the seriousness of the spill to shake down the FedGuv for money.

Everybody and her brother started up a charity and used the seriousness of the spill to raise money (less expenses, which can be suprisingly substantial) for “gulf relief” and pelican-washing.

The Coast Guard just looks incompetent.

Now, of course, the Administration, the opposition, the Bunny-Huggers, Louisiana and the scammers all have an incentive to pretend that the crisis is over, and was never that serious to begin with.

The Coast Guard still looks incompetent.

I suspect the truth is somewhere in the middle, toward the end of “no big deal”...

OIL IS CARBON! CARBON IS FOOD! And their are small sea animals that can actually live on it.

BP should have done a better job of negotiating the $20 billion fund. Since they opened most of the fishing grounds they're probably off the hook for any more payouts to that crowd.

I did the math, and posted it here on FR a few days into it. Roughly, if the Gulf never had water leave it into the Atlantic, never got more water from the Mississippi and other rivers and such, ....and the well leaked at the max......for a year....the equivalent amount of oil would be three drops in a medium size pool.

But those would be facts, that would put the story in perspective, so you would never see it in the MSM.

The big question is... Since the oil is mostly gone and the dmg onshore is radically reduced...

Will 0bama return the $20 billion he extorted from BP?

Sure, right after he returns the unspent TARP funds. Why do you think Zero wanted a 'trust fund' set up and funded, rather than just insist that BP pay claims? Because if there were any leftovers, Zero got to allocate them.

The cities along the Gulf should sue the news outlets for damaging their economies much more than BP did. Their hysterical coverage matched the hyper-ventilating Shep Smith’s reporting of cannibalism in the Super Dome during Katrina. (That Fox News is still paying this loser is a black mark on their credibility.)

The oils spill as portrayed by the Communist Lap Dog media

Oil is spilled = ENVIRONMENTAL CATASROPHE OF EPIC PROPORTIONS PREDICATED BY GREEDY, EVIL, SLAVE-OWNING BIG OIL!!!!

Obama administration takes three months to respond, and the response is politicized, bungled, and ineffective = Wow... there really was no problem at all. (crickets)

“Will 0bama return the $20 billion he extorted from BP?”

The “Stimulus” money is for this November and the BP money is for his reelection.

Incredibly convenient, a multi-billion dollar company caught in an environmental disaster.

Rush also said “equal to a can of beer poured into Texas Stadium filled with water”.

I believe the 20 billion dollars to repair damage or reimburse people for losses which BP agreed to was to be paid in installments. Since damage has proved to be4 relatively minimal BP will in all likelihood not be so eager to be forthcoming with the cash.

Way, way back when this spill first occurred, Rush Limbaugh smelled a Rahm Emanuel-type “crisis” for political exploitation and said, “The ocean heals itself” and some members of the Leftist Press (that’s all of the media) went ballistic and attacked him.

He was right.

They were wrong as they always are.

Two observations. It not the volume pe se, but the surface area because oil is less dense than water. A combination of factors including very warm water, the dispersed drops due to the dispersants which increases bacterial action and turbulance caused by stormy weather probably accelerated bacterial action and evaporation of the more fractions.

Because the moronic lefties in congress couldn’t use the spill as a lever to pass crap-and-trade bill they no longer hype it. The reality emerges that it was an unfortunate spill but not the world-ending catastrophe they said it was. Duplicitous morons.

We no longer need Congress to pass C&T, we just let the Bureaucrats at EPA do it. Likewise Amnesty with an EO from the anointed one.
