(Juan) McCain tough on border in GV meeting (BUT HE STILL BACKS COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM)

Sen. John McCain reaffirmed his tough position on border issues at a Town Hall event Saturday in Green Valley, saying Congress should not take up comprehensive immigration reform until the U.S.-Mexico border is secure.

“I will be glad to look at that situation after we get the border secure,” McCain said.

What does a secure border look like? “It’s like a lot of other things,” McCain told a reporter after the meeting. “... You know it when you see it.”

McCain said the border would have to be deemed secure by local law enforcement, such as Arizona sheriffs and the governor, saying “people live in a secure environment” based upon a number of factors, including numbers of illegal crossings and the completion of the border fence.

In the meantime, McCain said the government should address illegal immigrants already living in the country by enforcing sanctions against employers who hire them and by bringing lawsuits against “sanctuary cities” that discourage enforcing federal immigration laws.

McCain said he didn’t have an ideal plan for what should happen to people living in the U.S. illegally, whether they should be encouraged to leave the country, be deported, or another alternative.

“I don’t know, it depends on the situation,” he said. “If we get the border secured first we will be able to address (illegal immigrants) in a way that brings about a final solution. If we don’t secure the border we’ll keep adding on people.”

McCain also showed flashes of humor saying he “slept like a baby” after his defeat in the 2008 presidential election.

“Sleep two hours, wake up and cry. Sleep two hours, wake up and cry,” he said.

She never slacked off, she never gave up, unlike McCain who never really put up much of a fight at all.
