My book is about the historic/legendary migration of the Aesir and Vanir from the Black Sea to Scandinavia in the first century B.C.. Odin, Thor, Frey and Freya and all that; but as people - not gods; but people so extraordinary that their contemporaries, friend and foe alike, acknowledged their power - and their descendants called upon them as gods.

If my memory from CW reading serves, there were many that were convinced Grant had been drinking heavily during various points during the Vicksburg campaign.
As great of a general as he was, his Presidency probably wasn’t, as the Credit Mobilier scandal may have indicated.

Jack — I understand where you’re coming from. I do appreciate Sarah, though I am not a “Palinista,” as some here have called me. I just don’t LIKE the knee-jerk Palin-bashers. You DON’T seem to be one. You’re concerns are understandable. I share most of them. Oh — I wouldn’t call myself a “Palin lover” either. Um, that would just be wrong.... :-)
You mentioned Bill Kristol as Sarah’s briefer — which was probably true during the campaign — but he HATES her now. Probably with good reason. Her Conservative instincts (in my view) PROBABLY tend to conflict with the generally STUPID inside-the-beltway pseudo-conservative bilge Kristol is so infamous for.
BTW — I hate the yerm “neo-conservative,” because so often it can simply be narrowly defined as either “Jew” or “Jew-lover.” I find THAT rather offensive (though I don’t believe you meant it that way at all). I am not a “neo-conservative,” though I am a supporter of Israel, and of Sarah Palin.

I'm not pushing Pawlenty. I did point out that he seems to be taking steps to make a serious run, has a decent web site up, and is making some policy positions public.

He emphasized his campaign and first term with the Taxpayers League of Minnesota slogan "no new taxes."[46] During his first year as governor, Pawlenty balanced a deficit of $4.3 billion without raising taxes, primarily by reducing the rate of funding increases for state services, including funding for transportation, social services, and welfare. During his second term, Pawlenty erased a $2.7 billion deficit by cutting spending, shifting payments and using one-time money[47] and the state department of Management and Budget estimates that the two-year budget beginning July 2011 is $4.4 billion short.[47]So, he's been dealing with a situation like we have on the national level. Too much spending. And he's refused to raise taxes, and he's faced all the normal Dem tricks, shutting down parks and laying off police, and surived it intact.The local government aid (LGA) program was further reduced to city governments only and program reform dollars were eliminated.[48] In 2004, Attorney General Mike Hatch voiced dissent over the cuts and suggested that sex offenders found in some Minnesota nursing homes were the result of budget cuts to social services programs.[49] Later in his first term, disagreement among parties led to a government shutdown in 2005 from a deadlock between the governor's office and the split-party legislature on the state budget. Bush never showed that level of commitment to fiscal conservatism. He put up no fight, signed budgets that produced big deficits in every year of his administration.
Palin did cut wasteful spending, but Alaska has huge revenues from the oil industry and stll gets large infusions of Federal dollars.
So she hasn't demonstrated (that I am aware of) that she has the skills to force big cuts.
Is he a RINO? Maybe. Right now I think the charge is a bit premature, based on a few quotes of unknown context. Just like condemming Palin for the McCain endorsement, the lack of clarity on Immigration, and a few bobbled interviews isn't enough reason to say she's not potentially our best bet.

I know that's a problem. I wrote a little response on my understanding of the term, including the Jewish connection, on this other thread.
I agree that it's unfortunate that it's become a code-word. Maybe I'll start saying "Weekly Standard Crowd" -instead.
I've seen Kristol being the person standing up for Palin since the election on Special Report a few times recently. I don't think he hates her at all. I've never seen him dig into her.
My impression, and perhaps I've drunk some tard-aid, was that he was giving her a crash course in all the things she new nothing about. Pretty much all international relations, for instance.
And actually, if I had to pick the person to do such a job he might be on my list. Imagine who tutored Obama!!
By the way, one of the lessons of Obama, for me, is that experience really does matter a lot. Obama just plain doesn't have any executive experience. Doesn't understand international relations, doesn't understand how the Congres works. And thus is unable to do things. (look at the mess he made of healthcare) .
I'd like a Republican POTUS who is an experienced executive and manager. Palin seems to barely make the mark on this. Obama clearly did not make the mark.

“By Dewie Whetsell, Alaskan Fisherman. As posted in comments on Greta’s article referencing the MOVEON ad about Sarah Palin. The last 45 of my 66 years I’ve spent in a commercial fishing town in Alaska . I understand Alaska politics but never understood national politics well until this last year. Here’s the breaking point: Neither side of the Palin controversy gets it. It’s not about persona, style, rhetoric, it’s about doing things. Even Palin supporters never mention the things that I’m about to mention here.
1. Democrats forget when Palin was the Darling of the Democrats, because as soon as Palin took the Governor’s office away from a fellow Republican and tough SOB, Frank Murkowski, she tore into the Republican’s “Corrupt Bastards Club” (CBC) and sent them packing. Many of them are now residing in State housing and wearing orange jump suits The Democrats reacted by skipping around the yard, throwing confetti and singing, “la la la la” (well, you know how they are). Name another governor in this country that has ever done anything similar.
2. Now with the CBC gone, there were fewer Alaskan politicians to protect the huge, giant oil companies here. So she constructed and enacted a new system of splitting the oil profits called “ACES.” Exxon (the biggest corporation in the world) protested and Sarah told them, “don’t let the door hit you in the stern on your way out.” They stayed, and Alaska residents went from being merely wealthy to being filthy rich. Of course, the other huge international oil companies meekly fell in line. Again, give me the name of any other governor in the country that has done anything similar.
3. The other thing she did when she walked into the governor’s office is she got the list of State requests for federal funding for projects, known as “pork.” She went through the list, took 85% of the m and placed them in the “when-hell-freezes-over” stack. She let locals know that if we need something built, we’ll pay for it ourselves. Maybe she figured she could use the money she got from selling the previous governor’s jet because it was extravagant. Maybe she could use the money she saved by dismissing the governor’s cook (remarking that she could cook for her own family), giving back the State vehicle issued to her, maintaining that she already had a car, and dismissing her State provided security force (never mentioning - I imagine - that she’s packing heat herself). I’m still waiting to hear the names of those other governors.
4. Now, even with her much-ridiculed “gosh and golly” mannerism, she also managed to put together a totally new approach to getting a natural gas pipeline built which will be the biggest private construction project in the history of North America. No one else could do it although they tried. If that doesn’t impress you, then you’re trying too hard to be unimpressed while watching her do things like this while baking up a batch of brownies with her other hand.
5. For 30 years, Exxon held a lease to do exploratory drilling at a place called Point Thompson. They made excuses the entire time why they couldn’t start drilling. In truth they were holding it like an investment. No governor for 30 years could make them get started. Then, she told them she was revoking their lease and kicking them out. They protested and threatened court action. She shrugged and reminded them that she knew the way to the court house. Alaska won again.
6. President Obama wants the nation to be on 25% renewable resources for electricity by 2025. Sarah went to the legislature and submitted her plan for Alaska to be at 50% renewable by 2025. We are already at 25%. I can give you more specifics about things done, as opposed to style and persona. Everybody wants to be cool, sound cool, look cool. But that’s just a cover-up. I’m still waiting to hear from liberals the names of other governors who can match what mine has done in two and a half years. I won’t be holding my breath.
By the way, she was content to return to AK after the national election and go to work, but the haters wouldn’t let her. Now these adolescent screechers are obviously not scuba divers. And no one ever told them what happens when you continually jab and pester a barracuda. Without warning, it will spin around and tear your face off. Shoulda known better.
You have just read the truth about Sarah Palin that sends the media, along with the democrat party, into a wild uncontrolled frenzy to discredit her. I guess they are only interested in skirt chasers, dishonesty, immoral people, liars, womanizers, murderers, and bitter ex-presidents’ wives.

Who? I'm not. I've been here since 1998. I have no involvement with any candidate for POTUS, other than being a potential voter who is interested in them.
I'm a bit of a natural Devil's Advocate. I may end up supporting Palin, but I'm trying to make sure we vet everyone and find out enough not to be surprised. I think many of us who were big Bush supporters in 2000 felt pretty disapointed by 2008. He was fresh, and engaging, and sent pretty conservative messages. But in the end he was pretty accomodationist towards the liberals and their programs.
What Palin does well, as I've mentioned, I like her for. But it's not enough for me to say she'd make a good POTUS. Maybe I'll learn more and decide she will.
I suppose everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion, but, I love Sarah Palin and don’t believe she is infallible. The Franklin test says make a list of the positives and the negatives, then if the positives outweigh the negatives, you have a winner! So, she’s a winner, regardless of the naysayers on this board. If Jesus himself was running for political office, they’d find fault with him too.
She sure is and that’s why the lib women hate her. They all look like a bunch of men wannabes, so ugly in comparison - inside and out.
