Senate GOP blocks campaign-finance bill

Senate Republicans launched a successful filibuster Tuesday to uphold the Supreme Court's decision earlier this year that allows corporations and unions to spend freely on campaign ads.

Democrats had sought to undo much of the ruling by adding strict disclosure requirements for those who run ads, and banning any ads from companies that have federal contracts. They argued the court's ruling would amount to letting corporations buy elections.

But they fell shy of the 60 needed to overcome a filibuster and begin debating the bill.

"This bill is a partisan effort, pure and simple, drafted behind closed doors by current and former Democrat campaign committee leaders, and it's aimed at one thing and one thing only: This bill is about protecting incumbent Democrats from criticism ahead of November," said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Kentucky Republican.

Democrats said they are indeed worried about Republicans — and in particular Karl Rove, the political strategist for former President George W. Bush — spending millions of dollars on ads to influence elections this year.

"With today's vote we are picking sides," said Sen. Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat and a former chief of Senate Democrats' campaign arm, who led the push for the bill.

Isn't this what happens among both parties every election year? Itsn't this what we call campaigning?

I want to throw up when I hear McFlame’s whining RINO voice on Fox. No gonads, no guts, no spine.

Yes, but this year the money, especially grass roots money, is favoring the Republicans by unprecedented margins.

The demoncRATs are whining, “That’s not FAIR.”

Hey, you know? Life ain’t fair. Get over it.

Besides, their Kenyan Kommunist Kaliph had about BILLION dollars to McLame’s 150 million.

The dinks are ok with those kinds of odds, and will repeal or eviscerate the law if they have to in order to take advantage.

Remember zer0bummer’s “promise” to use only federally provide funds? How long did that last?

McCain has only temporarily switched parties to Republican. After the primary ends August 24 he will go back to the worthless RAT we know him to be.

Did you know he had Millions he did not spend in the presidential campaign? That he is using it now to smear a fellow Republican? Hayworth said it best: "If you had attacked Obama truthfully as hard as you are lying about me you'd be President McCain right now"

Exactly. To say that Rove and Bush, and Sarah Palin, are in the heads of the Democrats is an understatement. They will try every way they can to 'fix' elections.

Amazing that they filibuster a bill that can be used to threaten their reelection but they do not filibuster any of the other budget buster freedom robbing ones.

Don't know whether he'd be President or not, but it is obviously clear who McCain's natural 'friends' and soulmates are (big government statists, even if they are rabid socialists) and who he views as his life-long enemies (conservatives) by how he has campaigned ...

While I agree with the filibuster, it’s sad that these hacks will only Filibuster a bill that will affect their power - when it comes to healthcare, “stimulus,” Kagan, Sotomayor, Financial “reform,” etc. they remain silent.

They [democrats] argued the court's ruling would amount to letting corporations buy elections.

As opposed to democrats themselves buying elections.
