Democrat: Let's have mandatory national service

A bill introduced in the House of Representatives by Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., would reinstate a compulsory military draft during war time and require U.S. citizens not selected for military duty to perform a "national service obligation" – as defined by President Obama – for a minimum of two years.

Rangel introduced the Universal National Service Act, or H.R. 5741 on July 15. The measure was referred to the House Armed Services' Subcommittee on Military Personnel on July 23.

Rangel introduced similar bills in 2003, 2006 and 2007. His current bill does not have a co-sponsor.

Rangel took to the floor of the House to reintroduce HR 5741, stating, "I have introduced legislation to reinstate the draft and to make it permanent during time of war. It is HR 5741, and what this does is to make everyone between the ages of 18 and 42 – whether they're men or women, whether they're straight or gay – to have the opportunity to defend this great country whenever the president truly believes that our national security is threatened."

Rangel introduced similar bills in the past on the premise too many blacks were drafted into the military. I'm sure his colleagues will jump on board given his beyond reproach reputation.

Like so many of his ilk, Rangel beats a dead horse. The draft was ended in 1973.

Any black (or white) who joined the service over the past 37 yrs volunteered.

Total lunacy. Our armed forces are around 1.5 million now, and there are around 4 million kids in each grade of school (minus dropouts). So, this fool wants four million new adults each year to sign up for two years of military service or some sort of 'national service'. We'd always have eight million young people signed up for national service at any given time, and just what would they do?

This would be the biggest waste of time in money in all human history.

Maybe way off subject but I feared something like this when some schools started mandating SSL or student service learning (what my son calls socialist slave labor). 75 hours donated to service or you don’t graduate from high school. Maryland’s state schools actually require more if you plan on going to a state university so it is more like 400 ssl hours. If they force kids to “volunteer” than it is only a matter of time till everyone is “volunteering”. Just a thought

Serious constitutional problems here. The constitution provides for raising a military but it also prohibits involuntary servitude. I don’t see how you can eqaute the constitutionally approved draft with just conscripting people off the street against their will for whatever work project fulfills the whim of the politicians du jour.
